From The Desk of Annette Doyle
Dear Peter Noyes Families,
Happy October! It was adorable to see the children dressed so well for school picture day this week. Thank you to all the parents and staff who helped make this day run smoothly.
Celebrating Mr. Gorgone!
We are overjoyed that Katrina Kincade from WBZ/CBS will be visiting Noyes next week to highlight our music teacher Mr. Gorgone and his school-wide music videos. It’s well known in our own school community how much joy these productions bring to everyone here and, understandably, WBZ/CBS wants to spotlight it. We are all here for this feel-good story and we thank Mr. G for the tremendous heart, not to mention countless hours, he puts into these video masterpieces. Click here (or below) to check out his latest No-Yes Production.
School Advisory Council
Congratulations to David Jacquin, Beth Ludwig, and Jenn Spencer, our newly elected parent representatives, to the School Advisory Council! Thank you to everyone who ran for this important post. Our teacher representatives this year are: Stephanie Cohen Mongeon, Sarah Murphy, and Kristin Nawrocki. The first SAC meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 16, at 2:40 p.m. in the Noyes Learning Studio. School Advisory Council meetings are open meetings.
The Council operates as an advisory body to the principal in accordance with and under the provisions of the Education Reform Act of 1993 (MGL Ch. 71 Section 59C).
The School Advisory Council has three main purposes and responsibilities:
Assist and advise the principal in identifying educational needs of students attending the school
Assist the principal in reviewing the annual school budget
Assist the principal in formulating the School Improvement Plan
Lost and Found
Although this week is no indication, we will be getting into the cooler months soon and that means sweatshirts and jackets and winter gear. We strongly encourage you to put your child’s full name on the tags of these items. If their name is on it, we can easily return it to them if they accidentally leave it on the playground or in the cafeteria or somewhere on campus. Some families have stickers with their child’s name attached to the clothing tags and they are *chef’s kiss* to our staff who are trying to return items.
School Attendance: Important MA Regulations
Regular attendance at school is an important factor for a student’s success. If students are not in school, they are not getting the same opportunity to access the curriculum. A provision of the law related to student attendance and parent notification was added in July 2014 and SPS complies with this new provision by sending parent notifications and scheduling parent conferences. These communiqués will be initiated by the school administration.
The law is as follows:
Chapter 76, Section 1 of the Massachusetts General Laws states that all children between the ages of six and sixteen must attend school. School districts may excuse up to seven full day sessions or fourteen half-day sessions in any period of six months. Excused absences include: documented illness or injury, bereavement/family funeral, major religious observances, extraordinary family circumstances. Please note that it is the practice of the Sudbury Public Schools to request a doctor’s note for medical absences of five (5) or more consecutive days.
Under a provision of the law, districts are required to notify the parent or guardian of a student who has accrued five (5) unexcused absences. Unexcused absences include, but are not limited to: chronic absences or tardies without medical documentation, truancy, non-emergency family situations, and family vacations. Ten (10) or more absences, whether excused or unexcused, will prompt a parent conference and development of a personal attendance plan.
Parent(s)/Guardian(s) can monitor their children’s attendance records through Follett Aspen. Attendance statistics will also be included in Report Cards. Information about the SPS attendance policy can be found in the Parent Handbook, located on the district website through the “Parent” tab.
Celebrating Mr. Donaldson!
Steve Donaldson, our head custodian, has worked for SPS for over 41 years (34 of them at Noyes!) and he will be retiring this month. Congratulations on this well-earned retirement, Mr. Donaldson!! His last day will be Tuesday, October 31. To celebrate Steve, we’re going to have Dress Like Mr. Donaldson Day on Friday, October 27, in conjunction with our spirit day for Food Pantry and because Mr. Donaldson’s birthday is the very next day. Mr. Donaldson generally wears blue jeans, a SPS t-shirt, and a blue SPS baseball hat. As always, participation is entirely optional.
We hope you enjoy your three-day weekend.
Warmly,
Annette Doyle
Principal
This Just In: CONGA!!
Thank you Mr. Gorgone! You are AMAZING!!
Library Volunteers
We are looking for library volunteers to shelve books in our library. Classes with an adult volunteer are able to check out one extra book. Training is mandatory and I will be setting up sessions soon. If you are interested, please reach out by the end of September to our librarian, Barbara Gogan, via email at: barbara_gogan@sudbury.k12.ma.us or stop by the library during Open House.
