News & Announcements
Meet our Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
Please help us congratulate Mrs. Deana Raymer, who this week was named as our Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment. She replaces Dr. Robyn Euker, who was recently appointed as our newest Assistant Superintendent.
Many members of our school community will recognize Mrs. Raymer, as she has been an Eagle for 17 years. She's currently our Assistant Director of CIA and previously held the positions of Innovative Teaching and Learning Supervisor (K-12), Shaull Elementary School Principal, and a music teacher/music department chair. Before coming to CV, Mrs. Raymer taught for two years in Caroline County, Md.
Congratulations, Mrs. Raymer!
They're Ranked 15th in the Country
Congratulations to Cumberland Valley School District's girls wrestling team, currently ranked 15th in the country by USA Wrestling. This powerhouse team is in their second year as a sanctioned sport at CV. They've set their sights on their end-of-season goal - to win the first-ever PIAA girls wrestling state championship, which will take place in March. Portrait of an Eagle Superstars!
Led by our Superintendent, Dr. Mark Blanchard, we began in December what we hope to become a tradition of honoring our staff members who exemplify excellence in demonstrating the Portrait of an Eagle competencies. These staff members were surprised throughout the day by Dr. Blanchard, who presented them with a certificate and a POE Challenge Coin to celebrate both their commitment to their students and their work to foster our competencies.
This is the second in our series of celebrations to take place throughout the year (check back next week for more recipient celebrations). Please help us celebrate the following staff members:
- DELANEY BITNER: Ms. Bitner brings Portrait of an Eagle to life in her CV9 classroom by fostering, reinforcing, and developing the skills and competencies in her students. She embraces the district POE initiative and models competencies through her teaching and interactions with her students. She is to be commended for implementing the district-wide lessons with fidelity and being a teacher leader at CV9.
- JULIE HUSSEY: Mrs. Hussey is an #EaglesAreCommunicators superstar and an overall POE leader at Shaull Elementary School. More specifically, Mrs. Hussey is celebrated for the hand and body motions she, together with her class, created for each competency.
AMY KOVACH: Mrs. Kovach is the "grease in the wheels" when it comes to making Portrait of an Eagle come to life at Silver Spring Elementary School, and she has actualized the ideas that the school has had surrounding POE.
CHRISTINA MAUN: Mrs. Maun not only embraces Portrait of an Eagle competencies, but she implements lessons and holds Sporting Hill Elementary School students to high expectations. On any given day, you will hear Mrs. Maun bring attention to students who are demonstrating one of the competencies.
CV Student Takes Home Top Honors in Congressional App Challenge
Congratulations to CV High School Senior Andy Tang, who took home top honors in the regional Congressional App Challenge, which was created to highlight the importance of STEM and computer-based skills. This is the seventh year in a row that a student from CV has earned the top spot in the competition. Andy's app, called Perceptron, simplifies the studying process.
Winners of the regional competitions move onto the national level. Congratulations, Andy!
The Eagle Foundation will host the 26th annual Recognition Dinner on April 28, 2024. The Foundation is currently seeking nominations for its Commitment to Excellence Award, the highest honor bestowed at the event. The nomination deadline is Feb. 12, 2024. Those eligible include volunteers, administrators, alumni, coaches, staff, teachers, and students having a current or past connection with the Cumberland Valley School District (CVSD). The award is given annually to an eligible person who, through demonstrated excellence in actions or achievements, deserves recognition as a role model for the CVSD community. CV building employees will also be selected for recognition. CV Building Stars are identified through an internal selection process coordinated by each building principal. Please use this link to access the nomination form and dinner details.
Portrait of an Eagle: Student Spotlight
Winding Creek Elementary School 4th-graders recently participated in a simulated Shark Tank event, modeled after the television show of the same name. Students were tasked with creating an invention that solved a problem. Each class then selected their best invention to compete in the Shark Tank, and an ultimate winner was chosen from a panel of four Winding Creek celebrities.
Congratulations to Shark Tank winner Troy Solomon, who invented the Trash Buddy. Says Troy: "I recently traveled to New York and noticed there were no trash cans around. This is how my invention of Trash Buddy was born. The trash buddy is a trash can that comes to you. Our trash cans are connected to an app with GPS and Bluetooth capabilities. When you are in need of a trash can you simply push the app and your trash can will find you. You can drop your trash in the bin and off it goes."
Throughout this process, our 4th grade students demonstrated their confidence while using their problem solving, communication, and critical thinking skills. They are a Portrait of an Eagle.
