GENTRY’S EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION TUTORING PROGRAM HOSTED BY WEST HARPETH CHURCH
LOCATED AT 4141 COLUMBIA PIKE
FRANKLIN, TENNESSEE 37064
PURPOSE: To design an educational program that not only helps students advance academically in reading and math, but also educates parents and the community on the struggles children experience, offering solutions to help them cope in “such a time as this.”
The Plan
Goal: To help children in Grades 1-8 become proficient in math and reading.
Objective 1: Offer spring, summer, and fall sessions.
· The spring session is scheduled to begin Saturday, March 4th. The main focus of this session will be to address any math and/or reading deficits students, who are required to take the TCAP Assessment, might have, while continuing to address the reading and math needs of other students.
· The summer program dates are to be arranged but will be after VBS (June 5-9). This session will address the loss of knowledge that some students experience when their education is interrupted for a period of time (summer loss).
· The fall session is scheduled to begin on Saturday, September 16, 2023. The focus is on helping children with homework and monitoring their progress so that any deficits can be addressed.
Objective 2: Recruit teachers/staff immediately, preferably certified teachers, but can use others who have a good knowledge of reading and/or math and have the ability to teach it—juniors and seniors in high school, college students, other degreed persons
· The pay range: $20/hour to $35/hour
· Must tutor three (3) hours/week with one hour planning; get paid for four (4) hours
· Student/tutor ratio: 1:1; not more than 1:3
Objective 3: Tutors must meet the following requirements.
· They must have a background check if they have not had one in the past three (3) years.
· They must attend tutor training. This training will be held on February 18, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. until noon at West Harpeth.
Objective 4: Hold various workshops. Unless otherwise notified, all training and workshops will take place at West Harpeth on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. until noon. Food will be available at each event.
· The first workshop scheduled for the community at-large is on September 9, 2023 (others to be arranged). It will be facilitated by Erica Gentry, who is a licensed clinical social worker.
The topic is: “Gauging the Worry Meter.”

First Year Study Abroad Opportunities at Florida State
A Unique Opportunity with Florida State
For over 60 years, Florida State University (FSU) has been a nationally recognized leader in the field of international higher education, offering a variety of study abroad and internship opportunities across the globe. One of FSU’s most celebrated study abroad programs is the First Year Abroad (FYA) program. This program gives incoming first year students the chance to study at FSU’s international study centers throughout their first year of college (fall, spring, and summer terms). During this sustained global experience, students will form deep friendships, benefit from small class sizes, and use the host country as a classroom, all while they immerse themselves in a culture unlike their own.
Studying abroad with FSU also has financial benefits. Out-of-state students who successfully complete the FYA program will earn an in-state tuition waiver for the remainder of their first undergraduate degree at FSU. Florida residents who maintain a 3.0 GPA while abroad will earn up to $3,000 in scholarships towards the FYA program. Students can also apply their financial aid toward the cost of the program.
Going Abroad as a First Year Student
FYA students can choose to study at up to two of FSU’s international study centers, which are located in London, England; Florence, Italy; Panama City, Republic of Panama; and Valencia, Spain. You can learn more about First Year Abroad and FSU’s international study centers on our website.
Interested students should apply to FSU following standard processes. We encourage students to attend a virtual First-Year Admissions Information Session hosted by the FSU Office of Admissions to learn more about this process. All students admitted to FSU for the summer or fall term are eligible to participate in the FYA program and can apply after acceptance through FSU International Programs website.
In addition to its Top 20 national ranking among public universities, FSU is one of only six institutions in the country to receive the APLU Platinum Award, which recognizes a demonstrated commitment to Global Learning, Research, and Engagement. FSU also ranks sixth among public universities for “long-term duration” of study abroad experiences like FYA.
An Experience Worth Sharing
We realize counselors like you make a significant impact on your students and we appreciate your efforts to help match them with programs and institutions that meet their needs. We would very much appreciate your support sharing information about First Year Abroad with your students, and we welcome the chance to answer questions about FYA or FSU’s many other study abroad opportunities. Please feel free to contact the FSU International Programs team via phone or email.
Murray State Racer Day Open House Dates
