Thanksgiving
I hope that each of you have a peaceful Thanksgiving Break with your GMSE middle schooler (and family)!
FOOD DRIVE for International Kindness Day
6th Grade Update
- ACE 6/7 just finished Unit 5 and has their test on Tuesday, 11/21. This unit covers integer operations (and modeling them) as well as multiplying & dividing decimals. Students will also evaluate numerical expressions. They began their ratio unit Friday.
- ACE 7/8 is finishing Chapter 5, Systems of Equations. We will have a test Tuesday, November 28.
- Math 6 students began the second half of Chapter 4 last week. The first part of the chapter focused on variables and writing algebraic expressions & we are now moving into our ratio unit. The next two weeks will be spent really looking at what ratios are and the different ways they can be expressed. Encourage your student to look for ratios in the real-world - they are everywhere! Tentative date for the Chapter 4 test is December 5th.
- ELA Students will explore the power of nonfiction reading through book clubs, which will start when we return from Thanksgiving Break. Books will be provided for the student clubs to the best of our ability! We will be practicing skills such as developing central ideas, making inferences, determining fascinating details, and constructing objective summaries. On the writing side, students are learning how to construct strong, informative essays in which they investigate the question, “how are teen activists inspirational?”
- Science Students will be embarking on Science of food and thankfulness as we head into the break. After the break we will be finishing up our specific studies of Matter. Check in with your child about the status of their headphones - it is important that every child has a pair.
- Social Studies Students are looking at the essential question “What are the roles and responsibilities of government?” They are in charge of taking control of their learning through a mini-inquiry activity. Students have voice and choice on what government to study and they will be putting their knowledge into action. They will be taking what they have learned and creating a skit for the class to see or they will set up a debate to see which government is better for citizens.
7th Grade Update
- 7th Grade Social Studies students have been working on a Public Service Project where they have researched an architectural feat of Ancient Rome, and will argue in the Senate on Tuesday for their district to receive funds to repair or add the architectural feat to their area of the city! Students have been working very hard on their professional proposals, as well as their detailed posters explaining their argument.
- 7th grade ELA: We are finishing our second (and final) book club books next week. Expect to see your students continue to read at home each night!
- Ace 7/8 is finishing Chapter 5, Systems of Equations. We will have a test Tuesday, November 28.
- 7th Grade: We are about half way through the 2nd quarter. Please check in with your teachers if you need help or have missing work.
8th Grade Update
There are various time slots located on a SignUp Genius that can be accessed by Clicking HERE! You can sign up for as many, or as few, as you would like. We have 16 classes that will be participating over the course of four days (a total of 48 time slots to fill)!!!
Each day will have three, 10 minute hearings per class. We cannot guarantee that you will be able to judge your student because our order is randomly determined the Friday before judging begins; this is to make it fair for all of the students. You can increase your odds of getting to judge your child by selecting the day that your child's social studies teacher has groups going (Goody Dec.11th, 13th) (Caudill Dec.14th, 15th) AND if you choose the time slot that is when your child has American history class. One day of judging will at least give you a 50% chance of judging your student! If you choose both days their class is presenting then it will be 100%!
If all of the spots fill up, you can also come watch the presentation for your student without being a judge. The kids love to perform in front of you, even if they pretend they do not, and it always makes it extra special having parents in the audience on court hearing day! A word of warning however, if we do not have enough judges signed up for a class period, then you may get asked to go from audience member to judge :)
