How to Raise Kind Kids in a Tweet, Snap, and TikTok Post World
As we get further into this year, I want all of us to continue to work towards kindness in our world. That is a primary focus here at WMS this year! I want to take time to talk about raising kind children. This article gives you some simple ideas on how to help your child grow up kind. In our digital world, where kindness can easily be erased with a tweet, snap, or TikTok post, teaching and talking about kindness often can make a difference.
Model it yourself! When we are tired and busy, kindness can go out the window. But your kids pay attention to how you are treating others- from servers to cashiers, to the guy at the tire store, to their teachers. They will watch how you treat others and they will emulate that behavior.
Show empathy! We spend a lot of time at our kitchen table where we hash out tough issues talking about what others might feel. Empathy is putting yourself in someone else's shoes and understanding how they feel. How would you feel if someone posted... If someone treated you this way... As a parent, when you talked to me that way, how do you think I felt?
Teaching kindness towards others is necessary in this tweet, snap, and TikTok post world. We sometimes forget that kindness should be one of the first things we teach.
Enjoy your weekend-

Panorama SEL Student Survey
St. Charles Community Unit School District 303 strives to provide all students with the best opportunity to succeed academically, socially, and behaviorally in school. As part of this commitment, District 303 is enhancing our Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS) across the district.
This year, students in grades 3-12 will complete a universal screening tool to assess their social and emotional learning skills. The use of universal screening allows us to refine and strengthen our efforts to help all students achieve success by taking positive and preventative measures as early as possible. This also provides the opportunity to assist students who may need additional support with social and emotional learning.
One of the universal screening tools used by the District is the Panorama SEL Survey, which focuses on the following areas:
Self-Management
Emotional Regulation
Social Awareness
Grit
Self Efficacy
Sense of Belonging
Teacher-Student Relationship
The Panorama SEL Survey will be completed two times this school year during the weeks of September 27th to October 8th and March 14th to 25th. If a screening shows that a student will benefit from additional skill development, parents will be contacted and will work in collaboration with school staff to problem-solve and determine next steps.
Additional information about this screener and other assessments in District 303 may be found on our website at https://district.d303.org/departments/assessment. Thank you for your support and assistance in ensuring each of our students has the opportunity to achieve academic and social-emotional success.
Please feel free to contact Diane Lidman if you have any questions.
Dear 6th Grade Parents and Guardians:
Our goal was to bring our 6th graders to Camp Duncan for outdoor education this fall. Unfortunately, due to the length of time we would be on the bus, along with our current Covid mitigation efforts with social distancing measures, we have decided to cancel outdoor education for this year. We are sorry we have to do this, but we feel it is the best way to keep our students safe. Our 6th-grade faculty will continue to look for and implement opportunities for team building on school grounds both inside and outside as opportunities present.
Thank you
Middle School Parent-Teacher Conferences
Middle School conferences are scheduled for Thursday, October 7th from 8:00 am - 8:00 pm and Friday, October 8th from 8:00 am - 12:00pm. Sign-up for conferences will be via the Pick-a-Time conference scheduler. You will have a choice of an in-person or a virtual conference in Zoom. THE SCHEDULER IS NOW OPEN!
Directions: CLICK HERE FOR PARENT DIRECTIONS
Login to your HAC (HOME ACCESS CENTER) Account
Click on HOME
Click on the link for "Parent-Teacher Conference Scheduler"
Be sure to ONLY choose Q1 teachers!
A few notes about sign-up:
Parents should not feel obligated to sign-up for conferences. If your child is doing well at school, both academically and socially, then you might choose not to have a conference. (It does not make you a bad parent not to sign-up for conferences!) If your child is struggling, we would suggest that you do come to conferences!
You might only feel the need to meet one or a few teachers. There is no obligation to meet every teacher.
If you wish to visit the explore teachers, please sign-up to visit your child’s first-quarter explore teacher.
You can sign-up for a conference with a teacher only one time. Our student services team (counselors, social workers) will be available for conferences, as well. If you decide you need more time with a teacher, we are always willing to meet with you.
In some cases, a teacher may contact you in advance to set-up a conference time. That means we want to guarantee you a time to meet with your child’s teachers.
When you sign-up, try to sign-up for all conferences in a row. (Do not schedule gap times in the middle or you will be waiting around for a long time!)
You are welcome to have your RedHawks student with you during conferences! It is important that they hear what you hear. They are of the age when they are mature and responsible enough to be part of the conversation whether via Zoom or in-person.
STAYING INFORMED ABOUT WMS ACTIVITIES
There are two ways to stay informed about all of the happenings here at WMS:
- Our Friday Forecast has bigger topics. All parents get this weekly on Friday.
- Our Daily Announcements have more day to day operational announcements: auditions, club dates, tryouts, etc. You must sign-up to get Daily Announcements on the bottom of the WMS Website. You will get announcements on Mondays, but you will need to check this Google doc each day to see what has changed. It is a "living" document and helps reduce the number of emails you receive.
Dear RedHawk Families
Staff, students and parents are encouraged to help digitally document this year in the yearbook. We offered this opportunity to our families last year and loved the many submissions we received.

Support for Your Child if they are Quarantined:
If your child is quarantined due to Covid, our teachers will send work to your child and work with you and your child as we always have when a child is out of school. We want to recognize that quarantine offers some unique challenges for our students.
We will be offering instructional support through a certified teacher during quarantine. Ann Rose, a recently retired D303 teacher, will be available to support our quarantine students through Zoom. When a child begins quarantine, we will email both the child and the parent with information on how to access Mrs. Rose's Zoom for support. We encourage our quarantined students to access this instructional support!
