Note from the Principals
The start of school is always such an exciting time. This week, was no exception as we welcomed back students and their families to the HHES campus. Our first through fifth grade students were able to jump right into learning as they built connections with their new teachers and friends. Our TK and K teachers have been meeting with students and their families to learn more about how they can best support each learner this year. It has been such joy to have our students back on campus this week!
We want to set up all of our students for a successful school year. In addition to their regular instruction, the HHES staff will focusing on two areas for the first six weeks of school; attendance and kindness. Please see the information below for more information on these two key areas.
We are looking forward to a great school year! Thank you for your support and partnership!

Attendance Matters
Good attendance at school is crucial for student success. Research links regular attendance with improved outcomes for students from reading at grade level to on-time graduation. Conversely, children who are chronically absent in preschool, kindergarten, and first grade are much less likely to read at grade level by the third grade. Students who cannot read at grade level by the end of third grade are four times more likely than proficient readers to drop out of high school.
Chronic absence is defined as two or more absences per month, whether excused or unexcused. Two absences may not seem like much, but over the course of a school year, these absences add up to many hours of lost instruction. In HSD, students have a higher rate of chronic absenteeism than in surrounding districts, our state as a whole, and many parts of our nation (see images below). In the 2021-22 school year, only 64.4% of HHES students regularly attended school.
We want all of our HHES students to attend school regularly so that they can continue to make academic progress and build their social skills. While we want students to stay home when they are sick so that we can keep our community healthy, we want students in class at all other times. We only have 180 school days and we need to make each day count!
You can help us to meet our attendance goals by:
- arriving at school on time at 7:45 a.m. (doors to the commons will open at 7:35 daily)
- scheduling family vacations during school breaks
- scheduling medical appointments after school, when possible
- reminding your student about the importance of regular attendance
Thank you, in advance, HHES families for helping your child to attend school on-time, everyday.
