From Your Pastors
Dear Zion family –
This week, some areas to the south of us saw rain! We praise God for the rain He has sent, but we also know we need a lot more. So, please join us in continuing to pray for the rain our ground needs.
Save the Date
Pastor Kyle Borcherding will be installed as our new Worship Pastor October 8 during the 8 am service. He’ll be recognized at the 10:45 am service with a potluck to follow. Look for more details to come and make plans to join us for this exciting celebration!
Special Town Hall
Please join us for a town hall meeting on Sunday, September 10 in the sanctuary at 9:30 am. We will discuss the growth of our school and overall campus. God has incredible things in store for Zion!
Connection Hour Bible Classes,
A new season of Connection Hour Bible classes for adults begins this Sunday! We’ll be hosting four classes, covering 1 & 2 Thessalonians, Spiritual Warfare, Sharing Your Faith, and our ongoing class on the book of Hebrews. You can find more information below, or by picking up a flyer this Sunday in the narthex or lobby. Make a commitment this fall to be in God’s Word!
New Member Classes
Have you been joining us for worship at Zion and are you ready to take the next step of becoming a member? Our next New Member Class begins 9/17 at 9:30 am and runs for four Sundays. If you’d like to be a part, email Heather Ullmann at heather.ullmann@zionwalburg.org. You’re the reason Zion is such a great place to be, and we’d love to have you as an official member of our family of faith!
Genesis
We have two weekends left of our summer series on the book of Genesis! This weekend, we’ll look at a man named Joseph and a famous gift that his father gives him of coat of many colors in Genesis 37:17-24:
Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan. But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him. “Here comes that dreamer!”
they said to each other. “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.” When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. “Let’s not take his life,” he said. “Don’t shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the wilderness, but don’t lay a hand on him.” Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father. So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe – the ornate robe he was wearing – and they took him and threw him into the cistern.
When Joseph’s brothers see that he is the favorite of their father, they become jealous, and their jealousy leads them to do the unthinkable – leave Joseph for dead. Jealousy is dangerous. Have you ever struggled with jealousy? Join us for worship this weekend to learn more about how to turn our jealousy over to God. We worship at 8 am in our beautiful sanctuary, at 10:45 am in our fabulous worship center, or online at zionwalburg.org.
Your pastors love you!

Congratulations Mr. Wrege!
Principal Thomas Wrege was named the first annual 2023 Charles A. Winterstein Administrator of the year, presented by the Lutheran Special Education Ministries in Detroit, Michigan this past June.
For 150 years, Lutheran Special Education Ministries (LSEM) has served students with learning disabilities. Starting in 1873, the Lutheran School for the Deaf operated a boarding school in Detroit, Michigan for children with hearing impairments. Families from around the world sent their children to the school so they could receive the Christian education they desired. After the passing of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act in 1975, the ministry shifted its focus to working with students in their local Christian schools and expanded its services to help students with all types of learning disabilities. These changes also brought about a name change to Lutheran Special Education Ministries.
In conjunction with LSEM’s 150th anniversary, the ministry established the Charles A. Winterstein Administrator of the Year Award. The award is given annually to a Christian School leader who demonstrates a commitment to meeting the needs of all learners within their school community. Administrators are nominated for the award by members of their school community. LSEM’s Program Directors review submissions and select the winner. The award recognizes administrators who actively work to create academically inclusive learning environments where students with learning challenges feel safe and supported. By helping every student reach their full potential, we believe that Christian schools are helping the church at large fulfill the Great Commission.
Comments from staff:
Since day 1, Mr. Wrege has been an advocate for students of all learning backgrounds and abilities. He is passionate about providing the right type of education for all students. He is a leader, listener, role model, and teacher. I am blessed to call him my friend. He listens to his teachers, parents, and maintains a steady style of forward thinking. Mr. Wrege seeks Christ in all his decisions and practices. Congratulations to him on this well-deserved accomplishment!
Mr. Wrege seeks success for EVERY Zion student. He has been a champion for students who have many kinds of learning needs. Through LSEM and the advocacy of Mr. Wrege, Zion has been able to instruct children with learning needs the love of their Savior, Jesus Christ, while the child is also receiving specialized instruction that he or she needs.
Mr. Wrege is committed to providing a Christian education to every child who is enrolled at Zion. He seeks to ensure the success of every child, whether extra support or a challenge is needed to help him/her reach their God-given potential. He is thankful to the Lord for the opportunity to use his passion and gifts to the glory of God here at Zion, to have an incredible staff to work with, and for the support of LSEM.

Stephen Ministers meet with their Care Receivers once a week and supplement the care received from family, friends, Pastors and Elders. Zion is blessed to have 4 members previously trained as Stephen Ministers/Leaders. If you are experiencing a life crisis Stephen Ministry might be right for you. If you are empathetic to others we will train additional Stephen Ministers this fall. Please contact Michael Hawkins 210-394-5186

Fall 2023 LLL Virtual Event
The Lutheran Layman's League districts and Lutheran Hour Ministries staff will host the Fall 2023 LLL virtual event on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 12:00 PM CDT. The fall event will focus on how you can discover and celebrate your own gifts, as well as the gifts God has placed in your congregation.
You are a gift with gifts to share...but do you know what gifts you have? Lutheran Hour Ministries created the EveryGift Inventory to help you discover your gifts and how to use them. In addition, LHM partnered with the Barna Group to develop resources for your whole congregation to learn more about gifts together. Learn all about the EveryGift Inventory and the resources to go with it at the 2023 Fall LLL Virtual Event.
The event will include:
Jennifer Prophete, Director of Community Programming, serving as host,
Jason Broge, Sr. Director of Global Research and Development, sharing about the EveryGift Inventory and the "Gifted For More" Congregational Campaign Kit,
Jeff Craig-Meyer, President of United States Ministries, bringing greetings and an executive update.
