Counselor's Corner
Summer break is an exciting and fun time, but can also be challenging as children have a lot of free time on their hands. It can be overwhelming to maintain their daily activities, especially for working parents. Here are a few ideas to help:
Schedule fun. Try to come up with your summer list of activities the family wants and can afford to do this summer—trip to the zoo, beach vacation, backyard camping adventure, etc. Then you can map out the activities on a calendar and it will give your children something to look forward to.
Try to not overschedule. When it comes to the summer, sometimes parents think it is important to schedule every minute of the day from camps to sports practices.. While having a consistent routine is important, it’s also necessary to allow time for unstructured downtime.
Encourage your child to try something new this summer. There’s no time like the summer to encourage your child to try a new activity. It could be swimming lessons, an art class, or trying a new sport or summer camp. New activities encourage brain development and build your child’s focus and creativity.
Limit technology. When it’s hot outside and kids are bored, screen time has a way to occupy a lot of their time. Try replacing screen time with daily reading and regular trips to the library. Books open the imagination and creativity in every child.
Create structure and set boundaries. Summer routines are generally different from school routines, but it’s important to remember the necessity of routines. Children need a break from the tight structure of the school year, but they also need to have some things that will remain the same. Try to keep the same bedtime, maintain the same chore schedule, etc. You can reduce behavioral problems by ensuring a structured environment.
Most importantly, have a fun and safe summer!!
A NOTE FROM THE MATH SPECIALIST
The official Math Olympiad results are in! Participants in the Math Olympiad Contests are located in all fifty states, three US territories and thirty foreign countries. Students who participate are among the top math students from their schools. In all, there were close to 4,000 teams and approximately 100,000 students across the world who participated this school year.
In the Math Olympiad Contest, students engage in creative problem solving which develops their ability to reason, be logical, be resourceful and occasionally be ingenious. Learning how to solve problems and understand their underlying mathematical concepts are among the most important goals of mathematics education.
Goodnoe Elementary earned the highest team honor, earning a plaque for placing in the top 10% in the world. Individual awards are given based on how many points the student earns over the five-month-long contest. The contests are only five questions each, for a total of 25 questions over the school year, but they are rigorous.
Congratulations to Nathaniel Perry, who earned a perfect score on this year's Olympiad!!!
Students who scored in the top-2% in the world include: Nathaniel Perry, Luke Rubenstein, Callan Gilchrist, Daniel Tang, Luca Priori, Mariya Kothawala, and Oliver McDaniels.
Students who scored in the top-10% in the world include Mahita Pendota, Vincent Wu, Ava Schmidt, Adhruth Arvindhakshan, Lucy Gersh, Caleb Reilly, Jessica Wu, and Evan French.
In all, 49 students from Goodnoe Elementary School, across grades 3-6, scored in the top-50% in the world. Wonderful work, Goodnoe Elementary students!
Outstanding Balances on Lunch Accounts
Recently parents have been receiving notification regarding outstanding lunch account balances. It's important that these balances be paid prior to the end of the school year. Please know that this balance does not dissolve each year. These balances roll-over every year and will have a negative impact later on. If you have an outstanding balance, I encourage you to contact our cafeteria manager ASAP to reconcile your account.
CRSD CAFETERIA ACCOUNT REFUND FORM
By clicking the link below, you will have the option to request a cafeteria account refund, transfer your balance to a sibling, or donate your unused cafeteria funds to students in need in our district. We ask that all seniors and those leaving the district submit a form no later than Friday, June 9th. Funds for students remaining in the District will carry over from year to year. The form should only take a few minutes to complete. CRSD Cafeteria Account Refund Form
