MPVA Weekly Update
February 12 - 16 ,2024
Dear Parents and Students,
We have a lot going on this week along with some recognitions and celebrations below!
A note for our students (who all receive this weekly newsletter as well and read it during Homeroom every Monday) - on Wednesday we will not have GT SPARK classes. All students will stay in their regular SPARK classes.
Finally, this is "Random Acts of Kindness Week". We encourage everyone to say or do something nice for someone else just because. Let us lift each other up throughout the week and make it a great week!
Respectfully,
Mr. Sarabia
Academics are the mind of our school. Athletics are the heart of our school. Arts are the soul of our school. #WeAreMPVA
MPVA Updates
Visitors Window
Just a friendly reminder that, in an effort to avoid classroom disruptions, we kindly request that parents refrain from dropping off lunch, including outside food such as Chick-fil-A, McDonald's and etc. at the Visitor's Window during school hours. We encourage you to send your students with their lunches in the mornings or allow them to participate in the free HISD hot lunch provided in the cafeteria.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in creating a smooth learning environment.
Message From the Counselors
Random Acts of Kindness Week will be celebrated districtwide for all grades PK-12th grade, February 12-16, 2024. During Random Acts of Kindness week, the district will focus on making kindness the norm. We believe that all people can connect through kindness and that kindness can be taught.
To help support this district Initiative, a Kindness Cart will be placed outside of the main office where students and staff may take kindness notes and randomly submit them to people of their choice. The Be the "I" in Kind poster has been placed outside office 123, where we encourage all staff members, PTO members/volunteers, and parent visitors to be the "I" in Kind. If you take pictures, please tag them to @MeyerlandMS on Twitter/X or @meyerlandpva on Instagram.
We look forward to seeing all the random acts of kindness shared on the campus.
Respectfully,
The Counseling Team

Lovescaping
On January 31, we hosted our first Lovescaping coaching session at MPVA. Lovescaping is the SEL curriculum that our school uses to build the social-emotional skills that all students can benefit from. The Lovescaping curriculum focuses on 15 pillars that include: Respect, Care, Honesty, Communication, Empathy, Trust, Patience, Compassion, Liberation, Humility, Vulnerability, Solidarity, Hope, Gratitude, and Forgiveness.
These character traits are necessary to help build confident, caring, and responsible individuals and healthy relationships. We hope you can join us for the next Parent Workshop on February 29 at 10:15 AM in our school library.
The Princess Code Organization
The Princess Code Organization presents "The Hearts Dance", Friday, February 23rd from 6:00pm-8:00pm. Come out and enjoy the fun!!! Tickets will be sold in the cafeteria during A, B. and C lunches. Tickets are $5. Only one ticket can be purchased per student. Students will not be allowed to purchase a ticket with Temporary IDs. You MUST have a valid school ID with picture and name visible. Students with recent infractions for behavior will NOT be allowed to purchase a ticket.
We are looking for volunteers, donors, and chaperones. If there are any parents or personnel who would like to assist with setup, breakdown, chaperoning, or donating drinks and snacks, please contact Ms. Marsita Jordan at Marsita.Jordan@Houstonisd.org or Mrs. Brittany Perez-Williams at Brittany.PerezWilliams@Houstonisd.org.
This is a fundraiser for The Princess Code Organization; therefore all proceeds of the dance will go towards The Princess Code Organization efforts and its end-of-the-year, "Princess Ball". All Ticket sales are FINAL and NON-REFUNDABLE.

Art on the Streets Contest
Congrats to Mr. Adams, Ms. Gutierrez, and our amazing MPVA artists for their wins at the Arts on the Streets Contest! Meyerland took home the award for most submissions at the middle school level and Louisa Picard was the Grand Prize Winner in the contest!
Louisa is one of our Animation Class students and won $500, a VR headset, a table, and tickets to the Travis Scott celebrity softball tournament. All our finalists also received an Android tablet and tickets to the celebrity softball tournament as well. In addition, our MPVA Art Department won $250 certificate from Texas Art Supply. Not bad for a day’s work!
Middle and High School students from Houston ISD have participated since 2015 in the CCM's Foundation "Art on the Streets" student art contest. This competition was created to use arts and education to empower youth and young adults to make healthy lifestyle decisions that will reduce health disparities among underserved populations.

Theater
Kudos to Ms. Duran and all of our musical theater and tech theater kids who knocked it out of the park with “Seussical”. Our auditorium was FULL Friday night for this fantastic production! They also performed for a local nursing home and put on a show for Kolter ES and Herod ES giving many of those students their first taste of theater. Ms. Duran’s vision for more outreach in 2024 has been realized. Congrats to all and a huge thank you to our Theater Booster Club for everything they did to make this a rousing success!
