WELCOME TO THE LIBRARY
The Harlan Elementary Library/Media Center is the place to be for reading, research and inquiry, technology, digital citizenship, creativity and exploration! This Library Connection newsletter will provide you with information about learning in the library, recommended resources available to students in school and at home, special events, book recommendations, and more! Please also check out our Harlan Elementary website for more information and resources. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you have!
THE LITERATI BOOK FAIR WAS A HUGE SUCCESS - THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HELPED SUPPORT!
Battle of the Books Kickoff Dec. 4th @ 2:45 PM for students in the Multi-Purpose Room
- Book bundles, for those who ordered, will be given to students on Kickoff day. Students who did not order the bundles will have the opportunity to check books out from the Harlan Library or another public library -- Monday, December 4th.
- Team Registration - Monday, February 12th to Sunday, March 3rd, 2024.
- Informational/Coaches Meetings via Zoom: January 4th, 2024 @ 7:00 PM
- Battle Day - Saturday, March 9th, 2024 at Groves High School
What are your students working on in December?
- Adventures in coding - students will be working on various courses on Code.org to understand basic coding concepts (sequencing, debugging, loops etc...)
- Computer lab expectations, how to navigate the library website
- Using Choice Boards during choice time
- Understanding the layout of the library and how to checkout books
- How to work at stations (makerspace, centers, group work)
Students in 3-5 currently attend Library at times specified by their teachers, depending on the topics being covered. However, their schedule is more flexible and revolves around checkout and integrated classroom research and projects. They will be working on the following for now:
- Students are learning about various digitial citizenship topics such as how to determine personal/private information, how to recognize clickbait/spam and will soon be learning more about coding.
- Students are currently utilizing the library for check out and online databases and resources.
- Students will receive their coding instruction in the new year.
Checkout Common Sense Media for any questions you have regarding digital citizenship. This is a great website to check out to see if movies or books are age appropriate for your children.
What Databases and E-Books do we have???
- Destiny - Harlan's book search of our library collection
- PebbleGo/PebbleGo Next/e-Books (250+)
- SORA (audio books students can use from their device through class link)
- Gale in Context - research database
- MeL.org - research databases, online encyclopedias, games, e-books and more
- Typing Agent - where students can learn to type and their progress is saved.
- Discovery Education - where students can research a variety of topics, view articles and videos that are age appropriate.
Please return all library books when you are finished reading them. There is no need to wait for your library day.
Library Policies/Procedures
#Items to be checked out:
JK, Kdg and 1st = up to 2 items
2nd - 5th = up to 3 items
Books are allowed out for 2 weeks before an overdue notice will be generated. If you need more time than two weeks please ask for them to be renewed.
If books are lost or damaged students must pay for books to be replaced. This is to make sure our library collection is up to date and everyone has access to their favorite books.
Fines can be paid for by check (made payable to Birmingham Public Schools and in the memo line write Harlan Library) or cash. Please address the envelope to Mrs. Coleman.
