NWEA MAP Fall Assessment
District 34 strives to provide a comprehensive assessment program that aligns with our curriculum and informs our instructional planning and services. Teachers’ observations of student performance are complemented by various classroom and standardized assessments to provide the most thorough picture of student progress throughout the year.
District 34 utilizes NWEA’s Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment in grades 3 through 8 as one achievement measure for reading and math. MAP is one of the many tools that District 34 uses to determine students’ instructional levels as well as to monitor the progress they are making throughout the school year and from year to year. We administer this assessment in the fall, winter, and spring. Testing will take place on September 7th and 8th. Please see the schedule below:
SOS Information 2023
The adolescent years are marked by a roller-coaster ride of emotions—difficult for students, their parents, and educators. It is easy to misread depression as normal adolescent turmoil; however, depression (among the most common of mental illnesses) appears to be occurring at a much earlier age. Depression—which is treatable—is a leading risk factor for suicide. In addition, self-injury has become a growing problem among youth.
To proactively address these issues, Springman is offering depression awareness and suicide prevention training as part of the SOS Signs of Suicide® Prevention Program. The program aims to increase help seeking by students concerned about themselves or a friend. SOS is listed on SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices and in a randomized control study, the SOS High School Program showed a reduction in self-reported suicide attempts by 40% (BMC Public Health, July 2007).
Our goals in participating in this program are straightforward:
To help our students understand that depression is a treatable illness
To explain that suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs as a result of untreated depression
To provide students training in how to identify serious depression and potential suicidality in themselves or a friend
To impress upon youth that they can help themselves or a friend by taking the simple step of talking to a responsible adult about their concerns
To help students know whom in the school they can turn to for help, if they need it
This program will be presented during the months of September and October. 7th Grade will participate on September 13th, 8th grade on Sept 20th for 8th, and 6th grade TBD. Click on the link below for more information.

Dental Exam due for all 6th graders
In the first two-weeks of October, District 34 is bringing Orland Park Dental Services (OPDS) to our schools to provide dental exams to any of our students who need it. The State of Illinois requires students in 6th grade to submit proof of a dental exam. OPDS provide dental services to children on public aid as well as those with private dental insurance.
