Sheldon Update
September 12, 2022
Welcome from Mrs. Tanner
Dear Sheldon Families,
Families of OT students, the car line is a RIGHT TURN ONLY out of our parking lot. Additionally, please don't park along the fence line on Sena St., this creates a very tight squeeze as cars turn right out of the parking lot, risking damage to your vehicle. Thank you for your immediate attention to this.

As always, if you have questions or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to me!
Thank you for the privilege of serving you ~
Mrs. Gabrielle Tanner, Principal

Policy & Procedure Review
Daily Health Check
Each week the Sheldon staff reviews one of our Head Start Policies & Procedures and felt it was important that families stay up to date on these as well. This quarter our focus is on Health & Safety, and Nutrition. If you ever have any questions regarding our policies and procedures, please reach out!
Daily Health Check
POLICY:
Children will be observed for signs of illness or injury which could compromise their health and safety or the health and safety of others. This policy relates to Head Start Performance Standards 45 CFR Part 1302.47, 1302.42, and 1302.102
PROCEDURE:
1. Teaching staff will observe children as they enter the classroom each morning. Teaching staff will look for any unhealthy signs indicating illness or injury. The teaching staff will pay particular attention to children who have been absent due to illness or who have been exposed to a communicable disease.
2. Children who appear alert, responsive, and in good health will begin their daily routine.
If it is determined that a child is not able to actively participate in the daily routine due to illness, the parent or authorized person from the emergency contact list will be contacted to come and pick up the child as soon as possible. Staff observations of illness or injury will be documented in Child Plus.
Documentation will include:
-Description of the concern and any recommendations or referrals.
-Parent comments will also be documented.
-All information will be added in the “Attendance Notes” in Child Plus either by the teacher or nurse, if the child is sent home.
-If a staff member suspects that the child’s illness or injury is due to abuse or neglect, the child will remain in the classroom, no documentation written on Child Plus but a report will be made immediately to DCF, a concern sheet will be filled out, and a supervisor will be notified.

Activities That Build Brains
Here you’ll find handouts with suggestions for games and activities to do with children of different ages. These activities can promote child-caregiver bonding, executive function skills, and build children’s brains through play.
DCF Kansas Practice Model Overview
At the Kansas Department for Children and Families, we believe working alongside families and communities is the best way to achieve our mission of strengthening families and assuring children are safe. The current practice model began development in 2019 and has since been implemented across our state.
The Kansas Practice Model integrates aspects and tools from multiple practice approaches with evidence-based research and best practices to come alongside families, their natural supports and the community on a journey toward improved safety and family well-being. DCF puts the well-being of family and safety of the children at the forefront of every step in the process.
Our hope with this video is that families and communities will know what to expect when working alongside our agency.
