CVU Celebrations
March 17, 2023
Dear CVU Community: Advisory Conference season is upon us, and you likely received an invitation from your student's advisor last week. As one teacher commented, "Conference" really isn't the best word to describe our goal for the meeting; we should probably call them "Reflections." There are few times in a high school when a student is asked to connect and reflect upon their whole experience. We often look at individual classes or assessments or activities or moments, but we also need to string those moments into the larger patterns that help us understand who we are more deeply. Below are some of the questions we will discuss in the conferences:
Identity
What three words would you use to describe yourself?
What would someone who cared about you say about your strengths?
Describe a moment when you stood up for something you believe in or for someone you care about.
Is there something you think people would be surprised to learn about you?
Connection
What Connections have been most important to you in the past year?
Think about a group you are part of, what do you add to the group dynamic that makes the group stronger, or more positive?
Who are your people and why?
Proficiency
Under what conditions do you do your best work?
What courses are you most engaged in and why?
What is something that you are interested in learning but haven’t yet?
Direction
What courses are you currently signed up for?
How do the courses reflect your current interests or strengths?
What might you consider outside of your current comfort zone? (CVU Flexible Pathways)
Upcoming Events
Friday, March 24: To make time for Advisor Conferences, we will not have a regular school day. Instead, students and families will meet with Advisors to discuss our students' connection, direction, proficiency and identity.
Student Celebrations
Every Little Thing Club. We try. We don't always succeed. This was the snow village I was so excited about. It resembles something out of The Last of Us.
From Meredith Visco: On Friday, we made empanadas for lunch with Catalina and Elizabeth in Spanish 2 class.
The Ready Set Go Radio Show, hosted by Garrett rocks on! Check it out this and every Sunday night from 6:00-7:00 pm either on 99.3 or at this Link. Just find the "Listen" button. Got a song to request, or a shout out to shout? Feel free to email Daniel Lyons at djlyons@cvsdvt.org and we will play the song or announce your appreciation for someone on our next show.
Delainey and Joe, Representatives on the Youth Advocacy Council, hit the CVU beat, interviewing the community to gather perspectives about the staffing shortage the state is experiencing in the education and human services fields. Look for the video on a CVU show coming in the spring.
The 15th Annual Jr Iron Chef VT Competition was held on Saturday, March 11 at the Essex Expo. Jr Iron Chef VT is a career exploration program and competition that teaches communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills by empowering Vermont youth to create locally sourced meals that promote Vermont’s Farm to School efforts. The goal of the competition is to promote recipes that use local and seasonal ingredients that could be replicated in a school kitchen. Two teams from CVU participated and both teams won an award! The CVU Chefhawks: Jacob Medici, Alec Blevins, Harrison Young-Glatz and Devon Gamelin made Barbeque Bao Buns and won the Mise En Place award. The CVU Red Onions: Julian Olin, Magnus Nilsson, Benjamin Fina and Zev Barth made a Tofu Poke Bowl and won the Crowd Pleaser Award. Eleanor Marsh (Family and Consumer Science teacher) coached both teams. Both teams did an outstanding job! This link will take you to many pictures taken by Brian Fina. photo link
