VHS Newsletter
July 2023
From the Principal, Dr. Tobon
Viking Families and Friends,
We are halfway through the summer, and I hope you have had a good one so far. Below are a few key items I would like to bring to your attention as you and your student prepare for the upcoming academic year.
ONLINE REGISTRATION
As you prepare for the upcoming academic year, please note Returning K-12 Student Online Registration will take place Tuesday, July 25, 2023 through Sunday, July 30, 2023. Returning Student Registration is to be completed using the parent/guardian’s Skyward Family Access account. Computers for those with limited access or needing assistance with registration will be available in the VHS Main Office during normal working hours from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. beginning on July 25, 2023. Please call the school for an appointment.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES
Another item on your list of things to do prior to the start of the year is the purchase of school supplies. Please refer to this link for access to the current supply lists. Last year, the VCS secondary schools transitioned to the VCS PE Uniform for our physical education classes. Below are some important items to note as you help your student prepare for their upcoming PE course:
P.E. uniforms will be available for purchase for $20 via Blythe’s online and in-store.
Green, mesh shorts: $12 + tax
Heather gray cotton/poly shirts: $8 + tax
“Legacy Uniform”: Regardless of the school that they attend, all students that currently own a Valpo P.E. uniform may wear that uniform until it is no longer a viable option, (e.g. a freshman PE student may wear their middle school PE uniform at the high school, so long as it fits and is in good condition)
All students without P.E. uniforms will be required to purchase the VCS PE uniform.
Students are responsible for taking their PE uniforms home and laundering them.
DISTRACTION-FREE LEARNING
As we work together to create a successful educational environment for students, I am asking for your help with one area that can be a challenge for many, cell phones. While I realize we are preparing our students for life after high school, some of our students are in need of guidance in this area. Cell phones can consistently create an unnecessary distraction from the learning environment. Whether it is catching up or posting on social media, answering or sending a text message, or playing a game, the class time lost to focus on the cell phone each and every time does begin to add up. Therefore, I ask that you take a few moments to have a conversation with your student about limiting cell phone use to before and after school, as well as during passing periods and lunch. This allows students to get back to the basics and focus on school.
OPEN POSITIONS
We continue to prepare for the upcoming academic year and in doing so are still looking for the right people to join the Viking Family in the following areas: Family and Consumer Science (FACS) teacher, social studies teacher, and aides (special education, study hall and cafeteria). If you or someone you know is interested in any of those positions, please feel free to fill out an application on our HR website.
IMPORTANT DATES
Lastly, please pencil the following dates into your calendar:

Be sure to check out all the clubs at VHS during Club Rush at lunches at the start of the school year. Also, be sure to check out the canvas announcements each day for information about club call out meetings.
Staff Spotlight
Mrs. Liz Waldon
This will be my 3rd year at VHS. I am a co-teacher for Geometry and Math 10 this year. I was previously a co-teacher for English 9 and English 10. I also teach a Basic Skills class. I was previously a student council sponsor. I like being a part of VHS because of all of the great people I get to work with. Plus, there is always some kind of activity going on with clubs and sports. It’s fun supporting the VHS students. I am a little biased to Football and Boys Volleyball! Go Vikes! An interesting fact about me is that I hiked down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back up in one day.
