Nohl Canyon congratulates our Certificated and Classified Employees of the Year, Mrs. Stacy Gardner and Ms. Rana Nassereddine. At Nohl Canyon we are blessed with a great teachers and staff. Mrs. Gardner and Ms. Nassereddine very much represent the wonderful things Nohl Canyon offers our students. Please join me in congratulating Mrs. Gardner and Ms. Nassereddine!

This Monday, January 15th will be a no school day due to the MLK, Jr. Holiday.

This week, El Rancho Charter Middle will host two information nights on January 16th and 17th. Cerro Villa Middle School is hosting their Showcase on Thursday, January 18th. Please check out the info flyers below. Canyon (Feb. 21) and Villa Park High Schools (Jan. 31) will both host Community Showcases upcoming soon.

Open enrollment begins January 15th and has an initial close of January 29th. TK and Kindergarten registration opens on January 17th. See below for more information.

The Panoramic Picture for our 6th Graders will be taken on Friday, January 19th. 6th Graders should wear their class shirt on that day for the photo.

If you are interested in helping with our student drop-off or pick-up, we always welcome volunteers. Work as many or as few days as you are able, morning and/or afternoon. All helpers welcome! Stop by and talk with us in the morning or afternoon or let our Front office staff know if you are interested.

This month's focus for our Student of the Month will include COOPERATION - “Be more interested in finding the best way, not in having your way.”

Working together with others requires teamwork. If you wish to be heard, listen. Cooperation means working together in all ways to accomplish the common goal. It also allows individuals to move forward together instead of going off in different directions. Two horses pulling a wagon must move in the same direction or the wagon does not move.

Nohl Canyon Run Club is back!

The NC Run Club is for students interested in participating in the "Kids Run the OC" and the OC 5K marathon (race day is May 4). Beginning January 29th, our "Running Club" will meet after school every Monday and Tuesday from 2:30 -3:15. For our "Kids Run the OC" participants, the goal is to complete 25 miles by race day (May 4) and then complete the final 1 mile on race day. For students looking to participate in the OC 5K, the goal is to increase their distance and endurance through proper training.

If your child is interested in participating, please look over the linked slideshow and information. There is a QR code on slide 1 which will take you to the google form sign-up sheet. All students participating in the after school run program must be signed upon the google form. No student will be allowed to participate in the program if they are not registered. Once registered on the google form, you then must register for the final mile or the 5k run through runsign up, which is listed in the slide show.

The LCAP is a three-year plan that describes the goals, actions, services, and expenditures to support positive student outcomes that address state and local priorities. The LCAP provides an opportunity for LEAs (county office of education [COE], school districts and charter schools) to share their stories of how, what, and why programs and services are selected to meet their local needs.

We are excited to share with you that Orange Unified will be offering an elementary student "Invention Convention" this year as a part of our Community Science Night scheduled April 19th, 2024. This year your child has an opportunity to be tested as part of the universal screening and identification process for the Gifted and Talented Education Program (GATE) in the Orange Unified School District. The purpose of this assessment is to identify students with unique and outstanding learning abilities. Testing will occur during the week of January 29th-February 2, 2024.

Nohl Canyon uses a "Staggered" Start and dismissal to provide some relief with traffic. Supervision in front of school begins at 7:40 am. After dismissal, supervision ends at 2:40 pm. All students need to be picked up by 2:40 pm.

2023-2024 Bell Schedule

Thank you for making our parking lot procedures during drop-off and pick-up a safe and efficient machine. We serve a large number of vehicles in short period of time.

Thank you for your continued help with a few critical items:

• Please remember our Lower lot is Staff Only Parking. The lower entrance on Nohl Canyon RD is ENTRANCE ONLY in the Afternoon for Middle Lane traffic going to park in the FAR lot. Two-way use of this entrance presents a significant hazard to entering cars and pedestrian traffic.
• Please be kind to our parking lot volunteers. They make the whole thing work.
• Please ask your kiddos to walk when in front of school. Running children in the pick up area presents several hazards. Safety is our first priority.
• Trinity School Parking Lot is CLOSED for drop-off and pick-up parking.

• Parents, with respect to Trinity Pre-School and their families, we are not allowing Nohl Canyon families to park in the Trinity parking lot. Please follow this guideline and support us in keeping a positive community relationship with Trinity School. Trinity will often allow us to use their lot for special events but should not be used for drop-off or pick-up.
• Please remain clear of the Trinity lawn areas. Trinity lawns should not be used for student waiting for drop-off or pick-up. Students should always be picked up from our school site. If students are still here after 2:40pm, we bring them behind our school gates into our QUAD area for safety until parent pick-up. Please do not have your students wait at the Trinity site for pick-up.
• Please be sure to use crosswalks when crossing all major roads. Students being dropped off on Nohl Canyon Rd. and then proceeding across the street, presents a significant hazard to those students.
• Keep in mind, the Nohl Canyon Rd. entrance to our parking area is only to be used during afternoon pick-up and is limited to Middle Lane traffic that is pulling all the way through the lot to park in the back school lot.

Nohl Canyon has a student uniform policy that is in alignment with the districts uniform policy. Schools whose students wear uniforms have indicated that a uniform policy is a creative and positive way to increase student achievement and decreases student behavioral problems. Based upon the interest of Nohl Canyon parents and staff, our school will continue with our Student Uniform Policy.

School Uniform Policy

Enclosed please find the 2023-2024 Volunteer Guidance Memo. Note that the application has been streamlined and many of the trainings have been eliminated.

Volunteers will need to complete the following based on hours:

· Volunteers who work more than five hours per week - Volunteers who work more than five hours per week must obtain a fingerprint clearance through the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigations and submit to a tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment/examination. Volunteers are responsible for all associated costs.

· Volunteers who work less than five hours per week - A Megan’s Law registered sex offender check will be completed for volunteers who work less than 5 hours.

Volunteers will also be required to submit proof of their completed Mandated Reporter Training (60 min) and the Districts Illness and Injury Prevention Program (5-10 min). Please call Natalie Montoya at 714-628-5515 with any questions or concerns.

Unfortunately, school campouts have been placed on a no go list for Orange Unified. As such, OUSD schools will no longer be able to host and hold camp outs at this time. We look forward to planning other alternative events to get everyone together. The last Movie Night was a great success and an example of an alternative that allows the Nohl Canyon Community to come together for fun, food, and entertainment!

Nohl Canyon has a wide range of students in a variety of activities; Dance, Gymnastics, Equestrian, Cheer, Karate, Tennis, Baseball, Basketball, Football, Hockey..plus many more. If you would like to highlight your child, please send Mr. Strickland a photo and description of your child to be highlighted.

Fourth graders Emily Jun and Morgan Arrabaca played in The Pat's Jr Soccer Tournament January 6-7th that took place at the OC Great Park. Representing their club BOCA OC their team won the championship! Way to bring home the win!

James Frala and Avner Dalprat were members of Cub Scout Pack 850’s color guard at the Anaheim Ducks hockey game on Sunday, January 7. The pack sold the most popcorn in the county and James and Avner were the top sellers in their pack! Way to go boys!

Additionally, as a top ten popcorn seller in all of Orange County, James was selected for an intermission activity during the game where he won a signed hockey puck, signed photo, and Ducks hat.
