It's been an eely great week!
Summer Term 2
Another busy, busy week here at school. Our Year 6 pupils have enjoyed their transition days to Ixworth Secondary and have returned (somewhat recluctantly!) to primary School. Their confidence and enthusiasm will hold them in good stead for their upcoming adventures. Back at the HQ it's been a week filled with lots of woodland time - so much of our science curriculum can be taught outside in this glorious, June weather. A very successful rounders tournament saw Fire House win once again. We only have Water Day left in the Tri Bardwell Games to see if another House can emerge as champions! Sportsmanship was high and it was great to see our older students passing on their skills to our younger players. Special mention to Ava Owen for Best New Player and the mighty Billing siblings for their superb batting. Later in the week, we were visited by 'Eels On Wheels', part of the Eels In Classrooms project run by Breckland Wildlife Trust. Did you know that Ely Cathedral was paid for in eels? Or that all eels are born in the Sargasso Sea? Yes, even the Suffolk ones!
With all of our National Tests completed we are now planning the Year 6 Staycation visit, Leavers Service, settling in days for our new Reception starters and of course rehearsals have begun for the Carnival. It's set to be another busy, busy, busy week.

Discretionary Grant Funding
Information for families of pupils on Free School Meals:
Suffolk County Council has recently carried out a review of the Household Support Fund Discretionary Grant voucher scheme, and we would like to give you early notice that the contract has been awarded to a new provider. Edenred (UK Group) Ltd will no longer be responsible for the distribution of vouchers, and instead, these will be issued by our new provider, Sodexo Motivations Solutions UK Ltd.
The transfer to Sodexo will be implemented for the summer holiday issue of vouchers and will continue until the grant funding ends.
Within the due diligence process, SCC has, additionally, made the decision to alter the ordering process of vouchers to reduce the administrative burden on schools. The grant will still be provided from the Household Support funding the Council has received from the government; however, this will be issued to eligible families by the SCC Free School Meals team rather than by schools.
Families of pupils on income-related Free School Meals will therefore see a change in the issuer of their supermarket vouchers but full instructions will be provided in the email with the voucher.
We have been asked to remind you to redeem your May half term voucher if you have not already done so.
Holiday Activities Fund
Please look out for an email which should have come to you on or soon after 26th June.
If your child is NOT on FSM but you would like a HAF voucher to help with the cost of summer activities, please speak in confidence with Mrs Allman.
We hope to have the collated list of HAF funded activities in the next few weeks and we'll circulate it in the newsletter when we have it from SCC.
In the meantime, here are the flyers we've received so far. NB: Many activities are open to paying families as well as those with HAF vouchers.
- Summer Holidays in the Yard (venue: Bury St Edmunds Cathedral)
- SchoolsOut HAF Activities (venue: South Lee School, BSE and others)
- Abbeycroft Leisure (venue: BSE sports centre and across Suffolk)
- Babergh & Mid Suffolk HAF (venues around mid Suffolk and Babergh)
- Premier Education (St Edmundsbury Primary, BSE & others across Suffolk)
Toxic Masculinity factsheet
The Community Safety Team within Public Health and Communities, Suffolk County Council have produced a factsheet around toxic masculinity in response to increasing national and local concern about the impact that misogyny and toxic masculinity is having on the lives of children and young people.
There is a growing online community spreading misogynistic hate and it is becoming more and more accessible to young people. The aim of the factsheet is to assist adults in safely challenging negative language towards women and girls and to offer a counter-narrative to some of the hateful content children and young people may have been accessing.
Additionally we have created a series of podcasts to act as a counter narrative to misogyny. Access can be found at: Misogyny is Med-Evil by Suffolk Domestic Abuse Champions Network (spotify.com)
Please see the above factsheet for more information.
Anti Social Behaviour Flyer
Our local PCSO, Rachel Darvill, has asked us to circulate this flyer as part of Suffolk Constabulary's Anti-social behaviour awareness week 3-9th July 2023.
Update your Arbor account
If you have any difficulty doing this, please contact the office staff who will be happy to help.
Please also ensure that you clear all remaining debts on Arbor before 21st July so that our Finance team can complete year end procedures.
Thank you for the thank yous!

Healthcare plans (asthma/allergies) - are you up-to-date?
Medication is held by the class teacher and expiry dates can be checked with them.
Bikeability - October 2023 - Y5
Children will need a roadworthy, age suitable bike and a helmet. The organisers state:
Please note the course is designed to improve cycle control and your child should be encouraged to practice beforehand in a safe environment, especially signalling. We do not teach your child to ride a bike, we teach them how to ride safely.
To give the riders the best chance at achieving the outcomes of the course, please help them to practice riding smoothly, stopping using brakes (not feet!), and get them to ride whilst taking one hand off the handlebars. These things will greatly enhance their ability to ride at the required level. If you child has any issues that mean they cannot use both brakes, or would interfere with their riding ability, please let us know in advance of the course. There are often suggestions that we can make to assist, including the potential for the bicycle to be modified.
Year 2 parents - are you ready for September?
Your child will no longer receive Universal Infant Free School Meals when they move to Year 3 unless you apply now for income-related Free School Meals and are eligible. You will save over £435 a year and your child’s school will receive extra funding to support your child with their learning. If you have already applied and have been found to be eligible, you do not need to reapply.
To be eligible for Free School Meals you must receive one of the following:
• Universal Credit (up to £7,400 net earned income)
• Income Support
• Income based Job Seeker’s Allowance
• Income related Employment and SupportAllowance
• Guarantee element of State Pension Credit
• If you are supported under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
• Child Tax Credit but no element of Working Tax Credit and have an annual income that does not exceed £16,190.
• Working Tax Credit 4 week run on
Apply online at www.suffolk.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals or ask Mrs Allman if you would like to use a school computer to apply.
Summer born children – updated DfE guidance
This guidance sets out information about requests to delay the admission of summer born children to the Reception Year. It also includes guidance on summer born children transferring from primary to secondary school.
The guidance for local authorities and own admission authority schools is now found in a separate link to the guidance for parents.
Please contact the Admissions Team at Suffolk County Council for any further advice.
NB: The guidance applies if your child is taught in a different year group to their chronological age, i.e. if your child will be in Y5 in September but would be in Y6 according to their birthdate, you will need to apply for a secondary school place in the normal admissions round.

Is My Child Too Ill for School? - NHS advice
We are very keen to have children attending school if they are well enough. Please have a look at this NHS advice if you are unsure.
Absence reporting process - including current NHS COVID isolation guidance
If your child is absent from school please ring into the school office giving the reason for the absence ('unwell' is not sufficient), please do not email for absence. If you need to, leave a voicemail.
The School must be notified by the parent/carer of the absent pupil on the first day of absence AND on every day of absence thereafter, before the register is closed. If a telephone call is not received, the school will contact parents/carers directly.
Please see the Attendance Policy for more information.
If you suspect or know that your child has COVID, the NHS guidance for children now states:
"If a child or young person aged 18 or under tests positive for COVID-19, they should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for 3 days. This starts from the day after they did the test.
Children and young people tend to be infectious to others for less time than adults. If they’re well and do not have a temperature after 3 days, there’s a much lower risk that they’ll pass on COVID-19 to others."
Allergy Awareness
We are an allergy aware school and would like to remind all families that there may be pupils in school with a peanut allergy. If a child with a peanut allergy comes into contact with peanuts, or with a pupil who has eaten peanuts, then this could lead to an anaphylactic reaction. Anaphylaxis is a severe and potentially life-threatening reaction to a trigger such as an allergy.
Because of this the school cannot accept products containing peanuts to be provided in lunch boxes or for eating at other times.
SCC information for Cost of Living Support
Suffolk County Council has asked us to share with families their updated 'Cost Of Living Support' information.
Free School Meals - could you be eligible?
Your child may be eligible for free school meals throughout primary school. This could save you approximately £484 per year.
To check or apply online, visit: https://www.suffolk.gov.uk/children-families-and-learning/schools/school-meals-uniforms-and-trips/apply-for-free-school-meals/
Check if you're eligible
Your child will get free school meals if you receive any of the following:
Income Support
Income-based Job Seeker’s Allowance
Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
Guarantee element of State Pension Credit
Child Tax Credit but no element of Working Tax Credit and have an annual income (as assessed by HM Revenues & Customs) that does not exceed £16,190
If you are supported under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
Working Tax Credit during the four-week period immediately after your employment finishes or after you start to work fewer hours per week
Universal Credit (provided you have an annual net earned income of no more than £7,400 (£616.67 per month), as assessed by earnings from up to three of your most recent assessment periods).
To check if your child is eligible, apply online for an immediate response or call 01473 260989.
We encourage you to apply, because the school receives additional funding (Pupil Premium) for all children on income-related Free School Meals.
