Principal Kionna's Weekly Word
Dear Trix Families,
New Month, New Opportunities
The past two weeks have gone very well at Trix Academy. This week we embark on a new month, with new opportunities for scholars. We hit the ground running with teaching and learning, and we will continue to forge a path forward ensuring that we are providing scholars with the education that they deserve.
We need your help to now! As we move into September, we will begin assessing scholars on NWEA, which is an assessment that allows us to determine exactly what every scholar needs academically. This assessment will help us to tailor instruction to every scholar's need, monitor their growth, and get them prepared for the end of the year State assessment, MStep.
Here's how you can help:
- Be diligent in getting your scholar(s) to school everyday
- Give us a call to let us know if your scholar(s) will be absent for the day
- Refrain from picking your scholar(s) up before dismissal time (3:30 pm)
- Attend Parent-Teacher Conferences

This week on Thursday, we will have we will have our Title I/Open House. During this time we we will go over what it means to be a Title I school, and you will also have another opportunity sign an interest list for our after-school enrichment programs. Please be sure to look check out the section near the end of this newsletter that highlights our new enrichment programs.

Hello Trix Families!!!
We are so excited that the new school year is here!
Our teachers have been working hard to prepare their classrooms and lessons so that your scholars will SOAR this year! You play a big part in your child’s success, too. Here is an article on ways you can help your child get ready for school!
Here are some great questions you can ask you scholars to stay connected:
Tell me about the best part of your day.
What was the hardest thing you had to do today?
Did any of your classmates do anything funny?
Thank you for all you do!

Ms. Smith's Operational Rundown
Operations Manager
Hello Trix Families!
What an exciting and wonderful first be back! We were excited to see all of our old and new faces. We are looking forward to seeing everyone back this week.
Here are a few operational reminders:
Office Hours: Monday- Friday, 8am - 4pm
ARRIVAL
Scholars may enter the main entrance of the building at 7:45 am each morning. Scholars will enter the building and wait in the lunchroom with the supervision of a Trix Staff member. Breakfast will begin at this time. Our instructional day begins at 8:05. We will have a building wide morning meeting each morning during breakfast, then scholars will move immediately to their classroom instruction starting promptly at 8:20 am.
DISMISSAL
Dismissal starts at 3:30 pm. Early pick-ups hinder your scholar’s academic progression because they will miss important instruction. Parents are welcome to start pulling up to the Trix Academy Pick-up Sign (In GREEN), located at the corner of Fairmont and Fairport. You will give the name and grade of your scholar to the Trix Staff Members in the front. We will radio the scholar’s name(s) for pick up.
Scholars will be released to the parents in the pick-up line at 3:30 pm. Walkers will be released at 3:35 pm.
Upcoming Events at Trix Academy
Dates to Remember
Title I Meeting/Open House
If you were unable to make it to the All-School Orientation, please attend this meeting to sign your scholar(s) up for after school enrichment activities.
New After-school Enrichment Programs
We are excited about the after-school enrichment program this year.
All families will have the opportunity to sign an interest form during the All School Orientation this Thursday. The enrichment program will begin the first week in October and students will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays, 4 pm - 5:15 pm.
Scholars participating in any after school program must have good attendance, excellent behavior and must be working hard to meet their expectations in their core academic classes. Ms. Hayes, the Dean of Culture and Mrs. Williams, the Principal will ensure that the scholars chosen to participate in these activities meet all of the requirements.
Once we have solidified the rosters for each after-school program, we will host a parent meeting to go over expectations.
We want all scholars here at Trix Academy to have a well rounded learning experience. Please check out the new offerings below.
Trix Youth Choir
This year Trix scholars will have an opportunity to sing in a youth choir. Ms. Lynsey has a passion for singing and music, and she has developed a program for interested Trix scholars to take part in our first ever, Trix Youth Choir!
Film Club for Grades 5-8
Ms. Gordon has created a fun way to bridge English Language Arts and the scholars' love for movies. Middle school student (including 5th grade) will have the opportunity to explore film and analyze it using literary devices.
Competitive Chess Club
This year Mr. Orellana's chess club will join a Detroit chess league and compete against chess scholars from around the city of Detroit.
Playing chess is known to increase IQ, promote critical thinking, and teach core math and verbal skills. It also helps kids retain information, improve test scores, solve problems, remain calm under pressure, and perform well in school.
