The Power of Belonging
Dear LISD Families,
We have four schoolwide habits of character here at LISD: belonging, kindness, ownership, and perseverance. It's the beginning of a new school year with opportunities to connect with friends and make new ones, so this month we are focusing on the habit of BELONGING. The reason we call this a habit and not a trait is that we believe making others feel welcome and included, and building the skills to make and maintain friendships, are intentional actions. Every student can build skills and habits to add to their character toolbox. Some habits to cultivate belonging include asking others about their day and their lives, actively listening, inviting others into activities and conversations, and noticing when someone is feeling excluded and reaching out to them.
We have a new paraeducator, currently working with elementary students, and her name is Katrina Lovejoy. Katrina joined the LISD team this week and we are thrilled to have her. Stay tuned for her photo and bio in a future newsletter.
Have a great weekend!
All our best to you and your family,
Mary and Martha

Shaw Island Bike Trip
On Friday Sept 16, grades 3-5 took the ferry to Shaw Island for a fantastic cycling journey around the island. Students rode from the Shaw ferry the long way around the island to the county ballfield for lunch and team building. Then we pedaled down the hill to the beach and campground area. Sand castle and beach fort building, along with bare feet in the sunshine, made for a glorious way to build community alongside 44 young people. Top it off with ice cream and the final push back to the ferry and the day was complete. We can't do these trips without our dedicated parent chaperones and support vehicle drivers, THANK YOU. What a fun day!

Weather Change
As the seasons start to change and the weather becomes more unpredictable, please make sure your students are prepared...a change of clothes, a jacket, and even rubber boots. Sometimes weather is nice in the morning and turns bad quickly. Being prepared will help save time for parents and keep students at school.

For Secondary Families
As I work on updating the LISD studenthandbook and reflect on the first weeks of school, here are some important policy and rule reminders. Please let me know if you have any questions. I'll send an email to students with the same information:
- Dress Code - (regarding tops)..."All shirts and tops are required to have sleeves or straps. The top of a shirt must reach within two inches of the armpits. The lowest part of a shirt should end at the belly button or lower."
- Attendance
- Students are required to attend all classes. If a parent does not call to excuse the student from class, we count this as an unexcused absence. As a parent/guardian, you should get an email message from our Qmlativ system at 5:00 p.m. if you child has been marked unexcused in one or more classes that day. Please check your email and let us know if you have questions.
- Students under 18 are not allowed to leave campus at any time other than lunch unless we have written parent permission.
- Students are not excused from class to watch athletics unless a parent has come into the office to check them out. If a teacher takes a class out to watch a game at the end of the day, they'll stay with the class.
- Students who arrive after 8:35 must sign-in at the secondary office.
- For students leaving class early for sports (both home and away games), the dismissal time is listed on the schedule. Students must go to class and remain in class until the dismissal time.
Thanks for your help, and please reach out if you have questions or concerns.
