Welcome Newcomers to the UUCSJS!
On May 22, following the service, we invite all who are new to our congregation to a special gathering. The purpose is to get to know each other better, and to help you to learn enough about us that you no longer feel new. After we introduce ourselves, we plan to speak to the following:
- How do we plan to run Church without a minister?
- Some bits and pieces from our proud history.
- What is our current social outreach?
- Ways that you can become involved in the life of our congregation.
- How does one become a member?
We will begin as soon as we can in the sanctuary. We promise to go no longer than 90 minutes. We will take a short break during the program and sandwiches will be available. Afterwards, you can choose to take a tour of the building if you can stay a little longer.
If you would like to attend, please respond to the RSVP box below.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Enter the World of Ordinary Beauty
We’ve all had those moments. The ordinary suddenly appears extraordinary. One minute the objects around us blend into the background, sit there as “things.” The next they come to life, so clearly carrying meaning and memory. What once seemed possessions, now somehow possess us. They are a part of us. And us them. When it happens, it’s beautiful.
So this month lean into the beauty of ordinary things, by picking one ordinary thing to praise. And then figure out how to praise it!
Maybe you’ll write an ode of your own, like the ones below. Maybe you’ll celebrate it by taking numerous pictures of it, from multiple angles at different times of the day. Maybe sharing it or passing it on to someone your treasure will be your way.
Here are a number of poetic praises to help you on your way…
- Ode to My Socks - Pablo Neruda
- A Personal Reflection on Neruda and “our things”
- Burial & To the Fig Tree on 9th & Christian - Ross Gay
- To the Mulberry Tree - Ross Gay
- Ode to the Women on Long Island - Olivia Gatwood
- Ode to Thrift Stores - Ariana Brown

This Sunday
Immigration, Refugees, and Migrants in South Jersey
Guest speaker Jose Sanchez
Since the mid 2000’s, migrants and refugees have been settling in our area. Jose A. Sanchez will cover Catholic Charities’ Reception and Placement program; the difference between the Afghans and Cubans and Haitians regarding work, public benefits, and more, as they settle in south Jersey. Also, what we can do as a congregation to help these people when they arrive.
Jose A. Sanchez has been with Catholic Charities for 15 years, working in one form or another with the refugee or immigrant population. Since July 2021, Jose has held responsibility for the reception and placement of 30 Afghan clients. While resettling this population, Jose was also working with clients from Haiti, Guatemala, and Cuba, all of whom were coming through the Texas border and into south Jersey. The work of Welcoming the Stranger continues now with the arrival of refugees from Ukraine.
PLEASE NOTE: This service will be in person at UUCSJS and streamed live on our Facebook page. A recording will be available later in the day on our YouTube Channel.
