Have you noticed how the "pendulum" often swings in life? This could apply to hairstyles, home decorating, types of vehicles, or any number of things. Pendulums also swing when it comes to raising children or teaching children. There are many opinions and many approaches to parenting/teaching and most of them have some good pieces to them that can be effective.

Thanks to all parents and students who gave a "Toonie for Terry" at last month's Terry Fox run. Our school raised a total of $450.00 for the Terry Fox Foundation for cancer research. Every Toonie makes a difference and we thank you for participating in this way.

Kindergarten classes in Hanover School Division are implementing the new Early Years Evaluation (EYE), as mentioned previously. The K teachers will be taking appointments to meet with parents to review the assessment results. Mrs. Lafreniere will meet with parents on Nov. 14. Then, on Nov. 17, Mrs. Guenther and Mrs. Deniece will meet with parents. Parents will receive more information from the office soon about signing up for a 10 minute meeting time to review the EYE report with the teacher. We hope you will be able to join us for these meetings.

On Thursday, November 16, all grade 1-4 classes will host student led conferences in their classrooms from 4:00 - 5:30 pm. Parents are invited to attend with their child to see what they have been doing in their class and to check in briefly with their teacher. This is a "come and go" format, so no appointments will be necessary. The term 1 report card for grade 1-4 is scheduled for release on Dec. 5. So, parents will have this opportunity to visit the class and see what their child is doing before the report card is released.

Please note that if you want to have a private meeting/conversation with the teacher, this is not the best time since several families will be in the class at once. If you wish to have a private conversation, just let the teacher know and this will be arranged for another time. Thanks for understanding.

Diabetes affects one in ten people worldwide so it is highly likely that you and your children know someone who has diabetes. This year, South Oaks School wants to highlight the efforts made by the International Diabetes Federation through their World Diabetes initiative. South Oaks will commemorate World Diabetes Day on Tuesday, Nov. 14 by inviting everyone to wear blue on this day. Thanks for supporting World Diabetes Day and our students and families who live with the challenges of Diabetes.

All bus routes are posted on the HSD website with times and maps. Any bus that will be late due to weather or mechanical issues will be listed online as well. Go to hsd.ca, to services, then to transportation services. Any bus that is late is posted there with the approximate delay time. Thank you for checking this prior to calling the transportation department!

Our annual hearing screening event will happen on November 21 and 22. We do this screening annually for our younger students to ensure that their hearing is sufficient for learning and communication. Hearing screening will include:

● All kindergarten students

● All grade 1 students

● All other/new students, at Teachers’ request

The screening is provided by a technician that is trained by the Southern Health audiologist at the Bethesda Hospital. If your child is flagged for a potential hearing concern, then they would participate in a second round of screening on Dec. 4 at school. If that is the case, we will let you know in advance.

Head Lice - As mentioned in the parent handbook, it is requested that children's heads be checked periodically for lice. If at all suspicious, call the school immediately, so we can take the necessary precautions to prevent the lice from spreading. If live lice are found, children must be treated with specific lice shampoo. Once the child is treated, they are able to return to school. Children will then be checked when re-entering school.

Remember that having lice is not a cleanliness issue. Anyone can be in contact with lice, either at school, at a sports complex, or even trying on headgear in a store. Please also note that lice combs should be used in addition to the recommended shampoo to deal with lice. Once the lice shampoo has been used, a lice comb, such as the LiceMeister or the Nit Free Terminator, will help get rid of the rest of the head lice that may remain.
