MESSAGE FROM MRS. MAURO
Below are photos from our February S.O.A.R. assembly. Students are recognized for being respectful, responsible, and safe by adults at school.
This month, some of our J-Leaders helped prepare and lead the assembly. It has been a monthly highlight to share positive office referrals for students who have made good choices at school!
March is a time for us to celebrate READING!
We will enjoy some school-wide fun for Read Across America the week before Spring Break (National Read Across America Day is Saturday, March 2nd, which is Dr. Seuss’s birthday). Here are our activities (those in italics are dress-up days!):
Monday, March 11th: Big/Little Buddy Craft and guest reader
Tuesday, March 12th: Dress like your favorite book character
Wednesday, March 13th: Big/Little Buddy Flashlight reading
Thursday, March 14th: Pajamas/Snack Reading parties
MESSAGE FROM MRS. MACGREGOR
Hello Valerius Families,
Based on some results from a student survey we took earlier in the year, our J-Leader team is working to address the question where we scored lowest. The question is: Students are nice to each other at my school. We have been using buddy classroom activities to promote positive interactions between different grade levels and have been promoting a theme of “Kindness Every Day” by following some new rules when playing in the snow. Our next idea for encouraging kindness is to collect items that will be used directly by our own Valerius students in need.
Please consider donating the following items to our Kindness for Kids Drive:
- Leggings in sizes 4-16 (new or used for all clothes)
- Sweatpants (boys or girls) sizes 4-16
- Tennis shoes (boys and girls) sizes 11-6
- Waterproof mittens or gloves
In addition, we are collecting the following district approved snacks:
pudding cups
- Del Monte Fruit Cups
- Welches Fruit Snacks
- whole grain fish crackers
- Chex Mix
- whole Grain Pop Tarts
- whole Grain Rice Krispie Treats
- General Mills Cereal Bars (Cocoa Puffs)
- Nutri Grain Bars.
We will be collecting items from March 4th-March 14th. Thank you very much for your support in caring for our Valerius students in need!
GRADE LEVEL SPOTLIGHT: KINDERGARTEN
In February, Kindergarten’s biggest celebration was making it to 100th day of school! We celebrated by dressing up as 100 year olds and doing lots activities with the number 100!
This month has also taught us about the Presidents, specifically George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We have worked hard on making connections between two different pieces of information and people.
MESSAGE FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE
Winter Weather and Appropriate Attire
As long as the temperature feels like 10 degrees with wind chill, the children will go out to recess. Please remember to send your children in hats, gloves, and winter coats every day. Unfortunately, we do not have enough extras to supply children with missing items from the health office.
Attendance Phone Number (515) 457-6503
When to Stay Home:
Fever- Student must be fever free for 24 hours (less than 100 degrees) without a fever reducer medication.
Vomit- Student must have not vomited for 24 hours before returning to school.
Diarrhea- Student must be free from diarrhea for 24 hours.
Pink Eye- Student can return to school after 1st dose of medication or as directed by your physician.
Please keep your child home if they are sick. This will help stop the spread of illnesses through our school.
Head Lice
Just a reminder, as a district, we no longer send out health grams. It is important to remember and assumed that head lice are in the community and schools at all times. The best defense is early detection and treatment. Checking your child’s hair thoroughly once a week throughout the school year will help with early detection.
Please also be thinking about sleepovers and other activities where children’s heads are close together or personal items may be inadvertently shared. There is a much higher likelihood of transmission in those settings than in school. Generally, heads need to be touching or there would need to be live lice on hats/pillows/brushes being shared.
If head lice or nits are found, we recommend that you treat your child and ask that you follow up with other parents if there was a recent play date or sleepover.
When treating the head lice, please follow The Iowa Department of Public Health guidelines with the two-week treatment plan (noted below). The treatment days are scheduled to interrupt the lifecycle of the insect. A nit comb should be used to comb the hair and can be bought at most pharmacies. By treating properly, it will help reduce the spread of head lice.

NOTE FROM NUTRITION SERVICES:
When making online payments for your student’s meal account, please use a browser other than Internet Explorer (IE). Browsers such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Safari will better support the functionality within our online payment system through RevTrak.
RevTrak is aware of the current issue that users are experiencing (when attempting to make a payment, the transaction is not completed as the payment indicator gets stuck indefinitely in a spin cycle). While RevTrak is currently working on this issue, it will be more efficient for families to switch from IE to a different browser when making online payments. Thank you!
