Update from Mrs. Lomonico
Dear TGE Families,
We are kicking the weekend with Trunk or Treat at TGE. After that, we will start next week with Red Ribbon Week, our 1st evening learning walk, and ending next week with our book character parade (families welcome -- see below). Then, we kick off November with our Family Fun Run. Please look over this newsletter carefully, and reach out if you have any questions!
Our first learning walk will be on October 26 from 5:30-7:30 PM (open house style). It will be a time for your student(s) to guide families (they are your tour guide) around the buliding to see their work along with work from all students in our school. It is a great opportunity for families to see what all students are learning at TGE! We know that Pickerington is also having a "Haunted Village" event this same evening. We would love for your to stop by TGE first if you are going to both. We hope you can join us!
Thank you for ALL YOU DO! We appreciate your support, partnership, and communication with us. It takes all of us working together in order to be successful. We had more parents coming to Parent Teacher Conferences in the fall, more positive conversations, and more support than I have experienced in the past! It is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Erika Lomonico

Book Character Day + parade at TGE!!! - October 27, 2023!
We will be parading around the school, and you are welcome to cheer us on!
- Grades AM K, 2, and 4 will be parading at 10:15 AM.
- Grades PM K, 1, and 3 will parade around the school at 2:45 PM.
We will start in the back of the school, so if you (parents/families) want to line the sidewalk in the front of the school, we will be parading there, and your students will be excited to see you!
If you take pictures of the parade, please share them with me (erika_lomonico@plsd.us) or tag us on facebook! If you share them with me, I will post on facebook and share with our PTSO for the yearbook.

Safety Tips - Internet
Internet Safety Corner:
We live in a digital age and the digital footprints that we leave NEVER disappear. Most of our Tollgate Elementary students have access to the internet in some form or another. They socialize in online games or on smartphones just as they were on the playground. But like any community, there are risks and dangers.
Even though we have both visual and digital monitoring systems in place at school, parents are the best suited to monitor students’ online activity. They are also the most trusted adults most kids will turn to if they experience online dangers. Understanding what your children do online is vital to protecting them from digital threats. Here are a couple of helpful ideas to deploy at home.
1. Know the risks: Understand what cyberbullying is, where and how it happens, and how to spot it. Explain that online bullies can act friendly at first, but also encourage your child to be on the lookout for any interactions that make them feel bad, scared, or sad.
2. Talk about it: Have ongoing discussions with your child. Talk about what cyberbullying is and what types of communication are acceptable and unacceptable. Make sure your child knows that it’s safe for them to talk to you if something makes them uncomfortable.
3. Keep a watchful eye: Place the computer in a common room and monitor all screen time. Use a shared email account, and if you let kids interact on social media, make sure you have full access to manage their accounts. Parental control software is another great way to stay in the know.
4. Set boundaries: Put time limits on screen time. Include all online activities—from homework to playing games and surfing the web. Restrict social media access and email accounts, and set rules for any IM, texting, etc. Let your kids know you’ll be checking in regularly. Be prepared to renegotiate boundaries as your child gets older or starts to use new technology.
5. Build a network: They don’t say it takes a village for nothing. The more people you have looking out for your kid online, the more likely you are to keep them safe. Know your kids’ friends and their parents.
6. Be prepared to respond: Don’t wait until the heat of the moment to come up with your game plan. In case your kid does get bullied online, learn what the proper responses are so you can keep your emotions in check and help your child deal with what they’re going through.
Mr. May sent out a sign up for times to start coming in for anyone who has filled out a form to volunteer at TGE. If you have recently filled one out (or even if you did it a while ago), and you haven't gotten his sign up genius, please reach out to him so he can get the sign up to you (scott_may@plsd.us). THANK YOU!
