Monroe Memo
December, 2023
A Message From Mr. Bertsche!
Greetings Monroe Families,
I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving break. Hopefully you had some quality time with family.
A few things changed at Monroe over the break. Principal Nugent-Timofeeva's last day was on Wednesday, November 22nd. She took a new position in the Sheboygan Area School District. On Monday, November 27th, I started as Interim Principal at Monroe while the district searches for a replacement. I am excited to once again help the students/families/staff at Monroe. Monroe has a special place in my heart as I served as principal here for 20 years prior to my retirement in 2019. I look forward to reconnecting with the Monroe School community.
In addition to the principal change, we are also losing our head custodian Mr. Mix. Mr. Mix has accepted a new position in the district. His last day at Monroe was Wednesday, November 29th. We are currently in the process of hiring a replacement for Mr. Mix. In the meantime, our maintenance department and night custodian, Mr. Griepentrog, will be covering for Mr. Mix. Mr. Mix joined the Monroe team this past summer. We thank him for all he has done to keep the building operating and looking good.
Lastly, a few rooms were moved over the holiday. Most were smaller rooms. This was done in an effort to support student needs in the building. So if your child mentions they are in a different room for something, it may be due to the adjustments made over Thanksgiving break.
I look forward to helping the Monroe School Community and appreciate your support as I get acclimated. Please don't hesitate to call if you have any questions. My office phone number is 920-663-9552.
Bill Bertsche
Monroe School Interim Principal
Winter Concert Information
Ms. Ziolkowski and the Monroe students are excited to present their winter concert, "Songs of Hope" on Friday, December 8th. Grades K-2 performance will begin at 2:00, with doors opening at 1:40. Grades 3-5 performance will start at 2:45, with doors opening once the attendees of the first concert have exited the building at approximately 2:35.
Students from the first concert will head back to class after their performance as instruction will continue until the end of the day. We ask that parents do not ask to release their children early as it will cause noise and commotion in the hallways as the 2nd performance is in progress . Thank you for your understanding with this matter!
We hope to see you all there!

SFA Update
Recently, our Getting Along Together lessons across all grade levels have been focused on developing an understanding of our feelings and empathy. What a perfect time of the year to nurture kindness and compassion in our kids! Here are some ways you can inspire empathy at home:
Family Reflections: Take some time to discuss moments when empathy really made a difference.
Volunteer Together: Engaging in acts of service in our community as a family is a powerful way to instill empathy.
Character Study: Study and discuss the emotions of a character in a book you are reading or from a movie you are watching together.
Open Conversations: Create a safe place for open conversations about emotions and experiences. Encourage your child to share feelings and actively listen.
A continued “THANK YOU” for everything you have done to support your child’s education so far this school year! As we head into what can often be a busy season for many families, an encouragement to continue those routines and structures at home that help your child come to school ready to learn each day. Our reading block begins at 9am each morning - it is critical that your child is here on time for school so they do not miss out on any instructional minutes! Please continue to make time for your child to read at home - even on those busiest days!
As always, please reach out as any questions or concerns may arise!

Substititue Teachers Needed!
MPSD & Monroe Needs Substitute Teachers; District Raises Pay
The school district increased daily rates for subs
We need you! Due to a shortage of substitute teachers, MPSD raised its daily pay for subs to encourage more community members to give it a try. Did you know? Any person who has an associate degree or a bachelor degree in any field can serve as a substitute teacher. Substitutes can pick and choose how many hours or days they want to serve. MPSD also is interested in hiring full-time substitute teachers.
MPSD’s daily pay rate for subs was increased to a range of $180 to $250. Someone with an associate or bachelor’s degree in any field will earn $180 per day. If that person works more than four consecutive days, the daily rate rises to $200. A full-time substitute teacher earns $225 per day. State-certified and retired teachers also can step up to serve as subs, earning $225 and $250 per day, respectively.
“The schedule is very flexible, and people can choose as few or as many hours as they want,” said Mike Nault, MPSD Director of Human Resources. “Our pay is very competitive and it is a rewarding experience. You get to help students in your community as they work through the lesson plans their teacher left behind for you.”
Interested? Email your resume to kroghk@mpsd.school or drop it off at the district office, 2902 Lindbergh Dr. in Manitowoc. For questions, call 920-686-4789. Thank you for making a big difference in your schools!
