WE ARE STILL COLLECTING RSVPS for the GMSE Veterans Day Program!
MSE Parents: Friday, November 10, 2023 is Veteran’s Day. We started a tradition in 2008 of honoring veterans who are family members of students at MSE. We are planning to honor veterans again this year at an assembly on Friday, November 10 at 9 AM. We are working on two types of recognition:
For veterans who can attend, I ask that you confirm their attendance on the 10th and follow this link: <https://forms.gle/HbytSL3Z86Zq9YfQ6> to provide the following information:
Name and Grade of Student
Name of Veteran who will be in attendance on 11/10/2023
Relationship of Veteran to MSE student
Branch of Service
Dates of Service
Any outstanding feature of their service (wartime service, service awards, length of service, theater of service, etc.) or anything about your veteran that you would like to highlight
The veterans in attendance on Friday, November 10th will be recognized and introduced by their MSE student at the whole-school assembly. The assembly will last until about 10:15 AM and will include: Introductions & recognition of Veterans, The National Anthem and Flag posting, Student and Adult Speakers, Patriotic Music and Slideshow, and A Moment of Silence. Again, please confirm your veteran’s participation and RSVP with the requested information by November 10, 2023.
For veterans that cannot be in attendance, I ask that you send in a digital (.jpg) image of the veteran that we can include in a slideshow. The image file can be sent to me (hilberta@gjps.org) with the following information in the body of the e-mail:
Name and Grade of Student
Name of Veteran whose image is attached
Relationship of Veteran to MSE student

Dates of Service
Please have the image and this information to me no later than October 31, 2023 so we can include it in the slideshow.
If you have questions about your veteran’s participation, please do not hesitate to call or e-mail me. Thank you for your help as we show our students the importance of honoring those who have served our country in this manner.

6th Grade Update
Math 6:
Last week we assessed over Chapter 2 & grades are in Infinite Campus and tests were sent home Friday (10/20). Be sure to look it over & see how they did! We have been working to understand the meaning of percent & converting numbers to the percent/fraction/decimal equivalent representations. We are also talking negative numbers in the real world and will soon begin writing expressions with integers.
ACE 6/7:
Students assessed over unit 3, which covered positioning & comparing rational numbers on number lines, determining the absolute value of a number, graphing in 4 quadrants, and adding integers. The test came home on Friday, 10/20. We have been multiplying fractions and mixed numbers, creating graphs with appropriate scales and will soon be solving expressions by circling terms. Kids are doing great working with their teams and on the vertical whiteboards.
ACE 7/8:
Ace 7/8 students are working with linear equations. The students worked on a catering problem to decide which company would be the most cost effective depending on the number of guests attending a family reunion.
ELA:
Students concluded writing their personal narratives this week. Please ask your child about their wonderfully crafted true story! We will begin important reading work to explore character, setting, and theme in our next unit, “Deep Study of Character.” Encourage your child to read their chosen fiction book each night (and bring it to school every day!) Elements of argument and persuasion in our writing will be touched on in the coming weeks as well.
ACE ELA:
Students will be digging into fiction texts over the next few weeks. Particularly, students will study how character and setting come together to help contribute to the theme. Students will also begin analyzing words in context and writing science fiction screenplays.
Science:
How do the particles of matter behave in each state of matter and while undergoing changes? How can matter be measured? These questions will be driving our in-class activities and explorations in Science class. Please make sure your son/daughter has a working pair of headphones/earbuds.
Social Studies:
Currently the students are finishing the unit of prehistory. Our final investigation is over the topic of “Otzi” the “Iceman.” In our upcoming unit the students will explore the major world religions that impacted the Eastern Hemisphere. Please make sure your son/daughter has a working pair of headphones/earbuds.
