Cold Weather Has Arrived
Outdoor Clothing Expectations
During the winter months, the following outerwear is expected for our students during recess:
- Students are expected to wear all outerwear that comes from home (hats, gloves, mittens, snow pants, boots, etc.)
- Students are expected to wear snow pants and boots if they intend to play on any snow-covered area during recess. This includes the blacktop when it is snow-covered or wet.
- In the event that the black top is completely clear of snow and slush, students then may be on this location in their "everyday" shoes.
- Students who do not have the appropriate outerwear during snow-covered recess times will be asked to stay on the sidewalk.
Thank you for your support with this. These expectations limit the wet pants, shoes, and socks that students get when not dressed appropriately, and helps them avoid having those wet clothes for the duration of the school day.
Weather Cancellations
If weather conditions dictate that there will be no school or a delayed start, a decision to keep the schools closed is usually made by 6:00 a.m. Parents with students in school receive a direct call, text and/or email from our auto-call system through Infinite Campus since that is the fastest way to communicate with thousands of parents at one time.
As a reminder: If you have a new phone number or email address, please update your information in the Infinite Campus parent portal or contact your school’s secretary to update the portal. Also, weather alerts go out using the "General Notification" make sure you have the "General" box checked when verifying your Infinite Campus notifications.
Announcements are also sent to local T.V. and radio stations, please tune to local stations such as these rather than call the school directly: WAPL-105.7FM, WIXX-101.1FM, WHBY-1150AM, WKFX-104.9FM, WEMI-91.9 FM, WTAQ-97.5FM/1360AM, WWWX-96.9FM and WGEE-93.5FM; and WBAY-TV2, WFRV-TV5, WGBA-TV26, and WLUK-FOX11. If other school events, such as concerts or sporting events are also cancelled because of weather, they are typically communicated through these stations as well.
The District’s website and Facebook page are not our primary way to communicate school closures, so we ask parents to listen to the auto-call messages or tune in to the radio and T.V. stations listed for the timeliest updates.
Thank you!
A great big thank you to the Woodland PTO and all of the parents that contributed to our teachers’ dinner during parent/teacher conferences. There were lots of delicious soups, salads, pasta, and goodies. The generosity of the Woodland Community is overwhelming!
Post Book Fair Frequently Asked Questions
Can parents use unspent e-wallets at our virtual fair website? The virtual fair site will be available for shopping for a few days after our fair. After that, any eWallets with remaining balances will automatically convert to an eGift card.
My unspent eWallet funds have not been returned to my credit card. eWallet funds are not returned to a credit card. After the Book Fair, the funds become a gift card balance and can be used to shop online with Scholastic or to fund an eWallet for a future Book Fair. The funds do not expire and are not tied to a specific school or student.
Once an eWallet is created, where can details be viewed? Log in to your MyScholastic account to view, manage, or print an existing eWallet.
What happens if I forget about the remaining funds on my child’s eWallet after the Fair ends? Whomever created the eWallet will receive a monthly email reminder of their Scholastic balance to ensure it is not forgotten. The funds become an eGift card balance and can be used throughout Scholastic online or to fund an eWallet for a future Book Fair.
Could the eWallet funds be transferable to another school if the child changes schools or graduates and still has not used all of the money? At the end of the Fair, the balance is moved to an eGift card balance. It is not tied to a specific school or student when it becomes an eGift balance; it’s only tied to the email address used to create the eWallet. It never expires, can be used for any student, and can be used within any of the Scholastic online sites.
Do eWallet funds expire? eWallet funds never expire and can be used to shop online with Scholastic or to fund an eWallet for a future Book Fair. When our school has their next fair, the eGift card can be used to fund the next eWallet. The funds always follow the email associated with the eWallet or eGift Card. So it’s important to use the same email when an eWallet gets created for the next book fair.
I tried to place an order at the Scholastic Store Online, but did not see an option to use my eWallet balance during checkout. What should I do? Be sure to log in with the same email account you used for eWallet setup. During the Book Fair, balances will display as an eWallet during checkout. After the Fair ends, any balances are shown as a gift card balance at checkout.

The Power of Social Learning
Social learning is in full swing at Woodland elementary school! Social learning refers to how students acquire skills, behaviors, values, and knowledge by observing and interacting with their teachers, peers, and environment.
Young students are incredibly observant - they learn not just from direct instruction, but by watching how others act and communicate. Social learning helps build empathy, cooperation, problem solving skills, and more. Our teachers recognize the importance of social learning and incorporate it into lessons.
For example, when reading stories aloud, teachers will prompt students to consider how a character is feeling and predict how other characters will react. During Life Skills, students are encouraged to collaborate, offer help, and exchange ideas at their tables or in their classrooms.. Teachers model polite language, active listening, and taking turns - skills that students pick up through observation.
Social learning is also powerful on the playground. Whether cooperating on imaginary games, negotiating use of equipment, or including others - students continuously learn from social interactions with peers. Teachers can guide students in reflecting on any conflicts that arise and thinking through how they could be handled differently next time.
Parents, you play a key role too! Discussing your child's friendships, modeling kindness, and letting your child see examples of teamwork, empathy, and respect in your daily life reinforces the social learning that happens at school. Together, we can equip students with social-emotional skills essential for academic and lifelong success.
November PBIS Message
We Do Hard Things
Oftentimes, students who are struggling with something difficult will automatically ask an adult for help. We’ve been giving our students an opportunity to give things a try on their own first before we step in. Simply encouraging them to give things a try, will help them understand that we all can accomplish hard tasks. For example, getting started on a difficult math problem, figuring out how to manage a friendship problem, or practicing tying our shoes are all good examples of how our students can work on independent problem solving.
Here are a few examples on how you can help you kids be more independent at home, so that they will be motivated to be more independent at school:
- Use the language that encourages them to “try something first” or “we can do hard things”
- Set aside some times during the day or on weekends to practice zipping up jackets, tying shoes, etc. It’s hard to practice these things when we’re in a hurry trying to get out the door. We sometimes just want to help our kids so we can “get a move on” at that moment.
- Let the kids spread their wings and fail at times. It can be hard to watch our kids fail, or be unsuccessful. At school we like to reiterate that mistakes are a good thing! They help us learn and improve
- Have them practice spelling and writing their first and last name. Your child may know how to spell their first name, but how about their last name? How about their middle name? Do they use uppercase letters when it should be lowercase? Can they write it in cursive? (for the older students).
