LCPS COMMITMENT TO EQUITY
LCPS centers equity as one of its foundational core values. For our community, equity means being committed to providing a safe, supportive, inclusive, affirming, and respectful environment for each student and staff member that fosters success, growth, and academic rigor.
The cultivation of this environment requires us to reject and condemn the use of hate speech, racial slurs, antisemitism, and any action or behavior that discriminates based on race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, orientation, gender expression, socio-economic status, religion, ability, or other cultural identities or expression. Such noninclusive speech, behavior, and actions do not reflect who we are as a learning community.
We embrace and value the unique identities, backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and needs of each student and employee. Celebrating our diversity is important and helps define us as a school division. Demonstrating the courage to address inequities and remove barriers represents an integral part of our collective effort towards excellence in education. Equity is the vehicle that leads to greater access, opportunity, and equality so that each student is
empowered to make meaningful contributions to the world.
DISCIPLINE AT EVERGREEN MILL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Dear Parents,
An integral part of growing and learning for all students includes the inevitable fact that all children (and adults) will make poor choices reflected in negative or interfering behaviors that impact self and others. I still have copies of my elementary report cards and some of them aren't all that impressive in the behavior category! This month I want to give you a brief overview of how we address negative behaviors at school and of our formal discipline process.
The teacher is the first line of defense when it comes to addressing behavior concerns with our students. Effective classroom management and creating a classroom atmosphere conducive to learning are non-negotiables for our teachers and they all do an excellent job with this. In general student behaviors are categorized into levels. Level One behaviors are handled by the teacher (in conjunction with the parents if necessary). Not every level one behavior is reported to parents as many of these are brief, handled in the moment, and non-recurring. Level Two and Level Three behaviors are more significant and require administrative support, immediate parent notification, and collaboration between school and home. Examples of these behaviors are listed below.
Examples of Level One Behaviors:
• Nonverbal/Verbal Disruptions
• Minor Disrespect
• Calling out/Making noises
• Not paying attention in class
• Dress code violation
• Food/drink violation
• Minor device/technology violation
• Arguing with teacher/talking back
• Difficulty following directions
• Damaging property
• Minor physical contact
Examples of Level Two Behaviors:
- Physical aggression
- Throwing/destroying materials
- Leaving assigned areas without permission
- Use of foul language
- Repeated overt defiance
Examples of Level Three Behaviors:
- Physical aggression – towards self, others, and property
- Possession of weapons or look-alikes
- Aggressive verbal outburst- threats, harassments, racial, ethnic, religious, or sexual slurs
- Drawing pictures that illustrate violent behaviors toward others
- Eloping from class
- Sexual harrassment, inappropriate touching or language (Title IX)
A structured and consistent system is in place at EMES for how the administrative team addresses all levels of student behavior. For Level One behaviors, administrators work within the classroom with students and teachers using Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) to reinforce expected behaviors and replace or extinguish interfering or negative behaviors. For Level Two behaviors, Mrs. Haggerty and Mr. Huey take the lead by working with students, teachers, and parents to address these behaviors and assign appropriate discipline. Mr. Lani and Mrs. Haggerty take the lead on Level Three behaviors. LCPS provides
uniform and structured guidance for assigning discipline to students. The EMES administrative team follows this guidance in their decision making process.
When it comes to reporting behavior incidents to the parents of students involoved we adhere to strict confidentiality guidelines. We will always do our best to provide you with as much information as we can in a manner that preserves the integrity and confidentiality of all students and families involved. It is also important to note that while sometimes necessary, out of school short term or long term suspension typically does not yield positive results in effecting a positive behavioral change for the student being suspended. Please know that great thought, care, and concern goes into every decision to suspend a child from school.
As parents, please continue to review your expectations for positive behavior at school with your child. Plan a monthly or quarterly celebration for your child when they have demonstrated excellent behavior at school. This should be rewarded! If and when your child does make a poor choice or exhibits negative behaviors at school, remind them that it is the behavior that is disappointing, not the child. Using these instances as teachable moments when students are young will go a long way in deterring more significant negative behaviors when students get older. When the school must assign discipline, we ask that you allow your child to bear the consequences of their behavior as an opportunity for learning not as a punishment.
Let me assure you that we have the best students at EMES! That is thanks to each of you. Last year we had 618 students attending our school, and 602 of those students never had an office referral! That is amazing! Thank you for your continued partnership in all areas of your child's education. The difference you are making shows each and every day!
Expecting Success!
