This Sunday
Critical Race Theory
Presented by Guest Speaker Dr. Linda Nelson
PLEASE NOTE: There will be NO CHILDREN'S RE during this service.
Critical Race Theory is both a concept and a distinct political and intellectual concept and pursuit. As the former, we can find its roots and impetus in the works of legal scholar Derrick Bell, as well as those of feminist cultural critics Kimberle Crenshaw and Patricia Hill Collins. However, one might begin with scholars, such as W.E.B. DuBois, who wrote about the intersections of art and propaganda at the turn of the 20th century. The theoretical underpinnings of critical race theory are drawn broadly from scholarship across disciplines that focuses on the importance of our understanding the complexity of population heterogeneity and what that suggests for educational policies, political mandates and other authorizations. CRT was initially regarded as an outgrowth of the issues and initiatives associated with radical feminism and critical legal studies. As noted by Richard Delgado and Jean Stefancic, critical race theory has its foundation in the works of philosophers and theorists that share a radical disposition toward difference in human populations.
BIO: Dr. Linda Williamson Nelson, Professor Emerita of Anthropology and Africana Studies at Stockton University of NJ, retired in 2014 after 35 years of service. She holds a BA in literature from Long Island U., a master’s degree in literature from NYU, and a PhD in linguistic anthropology from Rutgers. She was recruited to Richard Stockton’s Writing Program. Her research on African American Dialectal codeswitching in narrative discourse has contributed to a unique body of research concerned with the interaction of language form, content, and identities in long segments of talk, both oral and literary. She has shared her research at numerous conferences across the US, France, and Jamaica, West Indies. She co-authored the book, Telling our Lives, Conversations on Solidarity and Difference, with Frida Furman and Elizabeth Kelly, which resulted in many readings, across the country, including two plenaries. Her current project, based on fieldwork in Jamaica, W.I. considers narrative constructions of agency in the lives of Jamaican women.
PLEASE NOTE: This service will be in person at UUCSJS and streamed live on our Facebook page. A recording will be available later in the day on our YouTube Channel.
*Masks are currently optional at UUCSJS.

The Greenlight Coffeehouse is Making a Comeback!
The Coffeehouse was a monthly event on Friday evenings at the UU center, where people from the congregation and the larger community performed music, read poetry, did a comedy skit, and provided other forms of entertainment in a relaxed, low key atmosphere. Coffee, tea and lights snacks were provided. We will need volunteers to make this happen, for the planning stages and once a month on Friday evenings to set up and take down, e.g., arranging tables, preparing coffee, etc. Please come to a brief meeting after services on July 16 if you are interested in being part of this. Help Moths and Other Insects! LED Lights Available for Purchase Sundays at UUCSJS!
ARTIFICIAL LIGHTS ARE ONE OF THE MAJOR CAUSES OF INSECT DECLINE!
OUTSIDE LIGHTS ATTRACT AND KILL MOTHS, FIREFLIES, AND OTHER NOCTURNAL INSECTS BY:
- Exhaustion
- Incineration
- Dehydration
- Predation
- Collisions
- Blindness
LUCKILY, THIS IS ONE OF THE EASIEST PROBLEMS A HOMEOWNER CAN SOLVE.
Replace all outside incandescent lights with LED lights with a warm color temperature. (LEDs are also more energy-efficient and will save you money as well.)
Homeowners should also:
- Turn off exterior lights when possible
- Use lights that are motion-activated
- Shade windows in lighted rooms at night
WHY HELP MOTHS?
- Moths are key food items for frogs, bats, birds, and many other creatures.
- In their caterpillar form they are absolutely essential to many songbirds as the primary food for nestlings. A study by University of Delaware entomologist Doug Tallamy found that a single pair of chickadees must find 6000-9000 caterpillars to fledge one clutch of young.
- Moths are also far more important pollinators than most people realize – pollinating tomatoes, potatoes, and other plants bees and other insects tend to ignore.
- Studies have found that moths pollinated a third of all plants examined, roughly equal to the percentage pollinated by bees.
- And moths are beautiful!

2023 UUA General Assemby
A few members of our congregation attended this year's annual gathering of North American Unitarian Universalists in Pittsburgh, PA - some in person and some virtually. These delegates from our congregation voted on a number of important things at this year's UUA General Assembly.
Over the next few weeks I will highlight some of these important items in our Midweek Message.
Proposed Changes to Article II of the UUA Bylaws
Thousands of Unitarian Universalists participated in deep discussions about the theology and values at the heart of our tradition. At GA, delegates voted to continue this discussion for the next year and approved several amendments to the proposed new Article II language.
