Operation Restoration (O.R.) and back this year…ACT Prep Bootcamp!

ORHS Fall Intersession is October 3rd through October 6th from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Lunch will be served at 11:00 for those who wish to partake. Bus transportation will be provided as needed. Students need to bring their laptops and their school supplies each day. Fall Intersession is self-paced, so once the missing assignments are completed, students are allowed to stop attending. They do not have to attend all four days if they complete their work before the week is up. Please check Skyward, look for emails generated from ICU, or contact your child's teacher if you have questions about their missing work or whether they need to attend intersession. For Fall Intersession, students are expected to complete missing assignments to improve their grades. Students who are failing a class or classes are strongly encouraged to attend.

In addition to Operation Restoration (O.R.), this year we are offering an ACT Prep Bootcamp, just in time for the senior ACT retake on October 18th. Students will spend a day with each section of the ACT to practice test-taking strategies and review content. We strongly encourage our upperclassmen, especially seniors, to take advantage of this free opportunity to improve their ACT score.

Below is the current status of the missing work by grade level. As you can see, we have 466 students missing almost 3,000 assignments with FIVE days left in the term. Students' final day to submit any assignment is OCTOBER 6th. Work that is not turned in by the date will become a permanent ZERO. We encourage every parent to check Skyward, review the text messages, contact your child's administrator or teacher to determine if Intersession is needed. Chances are the work is missing and needs to be completed!

Semifinalists in the 2023 National Merit® Scholarship Program (Evanston, Illinois) Today officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC®) announced the names of over 16,000 Semifinalists in the 68th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,250 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 95 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.

Impact Aid is a federal education program that reimburses school districts for the lost revenue and additional costs associated with the presence of nontaxable federal property. Most public-school districts are funded largely through local taxes and fees, and because federal land is exempt from taxation, districts containing federal property are at a financial disadvantage in funding their schools. We need your help in completing the Impact Aid online form to receive additional funding. We ask that every parent log into your parent portal account within Skyward and complete the form for each child in your household. The dates of completing the form are between Monday, September 19 and Friday, September 30. Thank you for your assistance.

Come see our Masquers Improv Teams perform this Saturday, October 1st at The Secret City Improv Festival! It will take place at the Historic Grove Theatre.

Want to save money and attend all ORHS athletic events this year? Purchase an athletic pass for $55.00 and gain entrance to all home events all year, excluding TSSAA playoff events. Passes can be purchased in the Main Office.

Due to the difficulty of obtaining badges for new students, this requirement has been delayed. Students will be required to have their student ID badges visible on their person following Fall Break. Student badges are a safety issue to ensure individuals in the building are supposed to be here. Student badges are used for unlocking the door, entering the library, checking out books, attendance in OR, and signing in to Counseling.

The state sponsored ACT retake for seniors is October 18th. This is the day that students return from Fall Break! This test is being administered online and is required for seniors. Seniors are automatically registered for this test, and there is no charge.

Students must arrive at school by 7:30 and report to their assigned testing room, bring an ACT approved calculator, and the school issued laptop. Students must update and charge computers the night before the test. Seniors will be excused from school after the test, at approximately 12:00.

It is imperative that seniors check their school email over break so that they don’t miss important updates regarding the ACT. Due to the timing of the test, email is our best mode of communication.

Also, don’t forget to sign up for ACT Bootcamp during intersession!

OAK RIDGE SCHOOLS after-school care is looking for students who are 16 years old or older, trustworthy, want to work 2 hours a week as an assistant in ECC through 21st CCLC on Wednesdays. Students interested should fill out the form below. Responsibilities include reading to a group of younger students and planning an activity. The hours are relatively flexible between 1:30-5:30 (a two hour block). The pay is $15.00/hour.

Genevieve Herrick has ceramic work that is currently on display at the Oak Ridge Art Museum. The title of her work is “Labyrinth” and will be on display through October 31st. Other works featured include professional works from artists across the region. A reception will be held on October 1st where awards will be presented.

McEacheren will be here on Wednesday, October 19th for make-up pictures for ANY student who needs their picture taken, including Seniors. These are the pictures used in the yearbook. Even if students do not plan to purchase pictures, everyone should have their picture taken.

On a beautiful Saturday September afternoon, 20 cadets from the Oak Ridge High School Navy JROTC Wildcat Battalion, boarded a bus enroute Bristol, TN to participate in the flag presentation for the Bass Pro Shops sponsored NASCAR race at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Prior to driver introductions, more than 120 cadets from six JROTC units, made their way around the track and took position along the inside wall of the front stretch. As Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” began to play, the cadets began unfurling the enormous US flag to honor America. Once the National Anthem began, cadets waved the flag up and down, as they were overcome by pride in what their participation as a JROTC cadet symbolizes.

For most of the cadets, this was their first-time taking part in an event of this magnitude, nonetheless, they performed exceptionally well in front the crown of nearly 100,000 spectators. Upon completion of the flag presentation, the cadets were rewarded, by Bristol Motor Speedway personnel, with free tickets to enjoy the race. This experience has the cadets looking forward to both NASCAR races at Bristol Motor Speedway next year.

The Oak Ridge cadets were joined by their colleagues from Cherokee, Cocke County, and David Crockett NJROTC units, as well as cadets from Dobbins Bennett and Unicoi County Air Force JROTC units.

The WildBand won First in Class AAAA and First Place Sweepstakes award for AAA/AAAA at the Clinch River Classic Marching Competition on Saturday. They won over the crowd as well as the judges! They were on fire! Appropriate for their show - Fuego Del Corazon - Fire of the Heart. Congratulations to these talented students.

The Choral Department's fall concert has been rescheduled for November 3rd.

The Oak Ridge High School WildBand will once again kick off its annual fruit fundraiser on Thursday, September 22. For more than 36 years, the WildBand has worked with Florida growers to bring fresh navel oranges, pink grapefruit, Hamlin juice oranges, mandarin oranges and Washington State Red Delicious apples to you.

New for this year, we will also offer pound cake, soup, and cheesecake mixes! Orders can be placed from now until November 11th, with local delivery in mid-December. Fruit can be ordered through any band member, online at www.wildband.org or at the WildBand fruit sale table during any of the upcoming home football games. Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the award-winning band program at Oak Ridge High School. The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a multiple-aptitude battery that measures developed abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success in the military.

This test will be administered Wednesday, Sept. 28th beginning at 8:00 a.m. (Students are responsible for any classwork missed.) Seating is limited, so please sign up as soon as possible.

Students who are testing will report to the amphitheater at 7:50 on Wednesday. This assessment is available for sophomores, juniors, and seniors only. Completing parent information on form implies that parent is aware that the student is taking the ASVAB. Below are the most recent updates from the CDC regarding COVID. Please review the flyer for full guidance from the TN Department of Health and CDC. Students do not have to isolate if family members are positive unless symptoms develop.

Students are expected to keep their badges on and visible every day. Students who fail to have their badges on as required will be given a day of lunch detention. We are aware new students and many freshman have not received their badges and will be receiving them over the next couple of weeks. Returning students who lost their badges over the summer should purchase a new one for $10.00. Badges are necessary for:

• Safety - Most importantly - to identify students who should be in the building
• Entry into the building - it's a key card
• Entering the Library
• Printing at the various printers around the school
• Signing into Operation Restoration
• Coming to Counseling for an appointment

Students driving to school are required to have a parking tag. There is NO cost; however, they must register their vehicle with Student Services and show their driver's license. Forms can be found in Student Services at Mrs. Viruet's desk.

Students who need lockers can request one on the form below. Students should walk around the school to find a locker that is convenient for them. They should take down the locker number and know the hallway where it is located in order to complete the form. Once the form is completed, they can report to Mrs. Viruet in Student Services to retrieve their combination.

For the last couple of years, the federal government has provided free breakfast and lunch to all students regardless of financial status. Free meals comes to an end this year. It is critical families complete the form below. If you have qualified for free or reduced meals in the past, a form MUST be completed or charges will accrue in the cafeteria.

While families may not plan to take advantage of free school meals, many families will qualify for services far beyond meals such as reduced ACT and AP test costs. This information is strictly confidential and can be sent to Julie Brockwell in the Main Office or directly to Dr. Larissa Henderson, Pupil Services.

Parents, students are NOT allowed to carry medications on their person at school. All medications must be registered with our nurse, Lori Gupton. Registration requirements are in the form below. This includes over the counter medications such as Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Benadryl or any type of allergy medications, etc. Students found with medication are subject to disciplinary action, which can include a Zero Tolerance and placement at alternative school. At the end of the school year, parents are responsible for picking up medications before the last day of school. The nurse will properly dispose of all medications remaining on the day of school.

In order for a student to take their permit test, a form is required from the school. Mrs. Thacker, our attendance secretary, prepares these forms. Requests are accepted through the link below. When school is in session, a completed form may be picked up in the Attendance Office. However, if school is NOT in session, the form will be mailed home by USPS.

Did you know your teen will have their driver's license suspended due to poor grades and/or poor attendance?

Parents should review this information with their teen drivers!!

CDC is asking everyone to continue to save your Coke product lids/case codes. Each cap earns $.05 for this classroom! Coke lids/codes can be dropped in Student Services OR families set up their own account @ https://us.coca-cola.com/give/schools, input your codes and donate them to Oak Ridge High School. All proceeds donated go to CDC to help pay for classroom supplies, materials and student needs. Thank you for your support!!!
