What’s Going On?
By: Ellen Windels
Bullying in school is always a serious and concerning issue, for students and parents alike. Recently at Falls High, publicized incidents have made this problem even more noticeable. Any time young people are thrown together, with all of their strong emotions and emerging maturity, conflicts will arise. But, when do these interpersonal conflicts become causes for concern? How does a simple disagreement transform into bullying? And what can our community do to prevent and treat this issue?
The Falls High Ink will be tackling all of these questions, and more, in a special upcoming newsletter. While we intend to investigate the prevalence of bullying within the walls of Falls High, we will primarily focus on the ways that individuals can support struggling students. “Part of growing up is learning how to navigate through these challenging social situations,” said Dean of Students Lisa West. More serious issues will require adult intervention, but there are also benefits for students to learn how to handle interpersonal issues and resolve conflicts. As West put it, “we don’t learn to read well in one year,” and social and conflict resolution skills must be built up over time.
There can be a misperception of the prevalence of bullying in schools because kids will conflate a conflict, which is a disagreement where both sides express their views, with targeted bullying. The definition of bullying is negative behavior directed by someone exerting power and control over another person, and while it happens frequently enough in schools, conflict makes up a majority of incidents. Both are important problems that require a supportive and healthy school environment to ensure they can be fully resolved. However, “when conflict escalates to bullying, adult intervention is absolutely necessary,” explained West, and “one of the difficult aspects that I see time and time again, is that students wait to report conflict or bullying issues.”
We hope to draw more attention to what our school community is currently doing to support students, as well as ways that students and staff can improve. Current issues like social media and the effects of the pandemic have exacerbated social problems among youth, making it all the more important for our community to proactive and encouraging when it comes to bullying within Falls High.
