"Be the Light- Shine Bright!"
A Message from the Principal
Shaner Families,
Wow, what a great turnout for the Family Engagement Night last night. Thank you to Parents as Teachers and Shaner PTO for partnering with us. Mrs. Gassmann and Mrs. Murphy's classes had the most students in attendance, so they will receive a snow party!
Thank you for your flexibility Monday morning with the delayed start. This allowed a few extra hours for the roads to be safe to travel on.
The attendance policy is listed towards the bottom of the newsletter each week. Just a reminder, if your student will be absent, you must call every day. If you know your child will be absent for multiple days, you must still call each morning so we can update attendance. The main office phone is (785) 235-7290. You are welcome to leave a message if Mrs. Parra is on another line and is not able to answer.

Outdoor Recess- Wind Chill
Outside Food & Drink
Students cannot bring any outside food and drinks into the school in the morning. We do not know the complete list of ingredients that are in different foods and cannot control the allergens that are in meals that are made outside of Shaner. We have many students with various allergies and need to ensure their safety.
If you stop and get breakfast on the way to school, please make sure your child is finished eating before the student arrives in the carline.

Attendance Policy
It is important your child attends school each day to have a consistent educational program. Of course, illness or other family emergencies can cause absences. If your child will be absent please let us know by contacting the office at 785-235-7290.
The Topeka Public School Procedures are as follows:
Absences are excused for student illness or family emergencies. If your child is going to be absent, you should call the office before 9:30 a.m. It is each parent’s responsibility to be sure the office has been notified of the reason for absence. Advanced notice is appreciated.
A phone call attempt will be made on every child that does not arrive at school by 9:30am.
After 2 days of unexcused absences, staff will conduct a home visit or make other direct contact with child’s family, determine what assistance is needed to remedy the problem.
Unexcused absences can result in a truancy report being filed.
Each absence after 10 excused absences may result in the need for a doctor’s release note to be considered an excused absence.
Although Kansas law does not require students to be in school prior to the age of 7, ANY child enrolled in public school does fall into the state truancy policies. Truancy reports will be made to the district truancy officer for any student with excessive absences and/or tardies.
Text Message Notifications
TPS Weather Notifications: As the weather begins to cool, we want to remind families and staff of school closing notification procedures. When making decisions about closing school, a number of factors come into play, including the safety of travel but also the safety of students who will be home during the day.
Should school be canceled, we will:
- Send a text, email, and/or phone call via SchoolMessenger
- Update the district social media pages
- Update the district website
- Contact our local media partners
To sign up for text message updates, text Y to 67587.
