Principal's Notes. December 5 2023
Our Learner Profile traits of the month our Open-Mindedness and Risk-Taking.
Being an IB World School means our students are part of a global community of learners. There are IB World Schools on every continent. In this fractured world, education is one place where we can build understanding and empathy for other cultures and countries. Edubridge International School in Mumbai for instance is an academically rigorous school teaching students the same Learner Profile traits as School Lane. https://www.edubridgeschool.org/
We are talking with students in assemblies and advisories about being open minded to other people's points of view and experiences. We want students to learn how to respectfully disagree with each other without dismissing or disrespecting someone else's ideas.
From the IB:
Open-MIndedness
We critically appreciate our own cultures adn personal histories, as well as the values and traditions of others. We seek and evaluate a range of points of view, and we are willing to grow from the experience.
Risk-Taking
We approach uncertainty with forethought and determination; we work independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and innovative strategies. We are resourceful and resilient in the face of challenges and change.
Homework Club
Homework Club takes place every Wednesday. All students are welcome. Meet in the library 3:15-4:15. Trimester 1 grades are due from teachers Friday November 17. This gives students just over a week to complete any missing work. Now would be the time to send your student to Homework Club! Email jsaladik@schoollane.org or cweber@schoollane.org

The ninth grade class will gather in the Cafe on Thursday December 14 in the morning to make the sandwiches.
7th Grade Interdisciplinary Unit and Exhibition
As an IB World School students are required to engage in interdisciplinary work. The 7th grade Exhibition for their unit is this week, Wednesday December 6. In this unit students will take what they have learning in about natural disasters in Individuals and Societies and the skills they learning in Language and Literature writing editorials and apply them to a new real world situation. In this unit, students are examining how two disasters were reported in the media. One is the flood which brough New York to a standstill in September 2023 and the flood in Libya caused by the collapse of two dams also in September 2023.

10th Grade Course Selection
We have started the process of registering 10th grade students to classes for 2024-2025 early this year. Mrs Hewitt, our IB DP Coordinator visited all 10th grade Advisory groups to explain the benefits of the IB Diploma Program and the possibility of taking individual IB courses. Over the next two weeks, our Counselors will be working with individual students to help them make decisions about next year. As 10th grade students start to look ahead to next year, they realize their decisions really do influence the opportunities available to them in the career and college world. We are encouraging everyone to think carefully about what courses to take and to take on challenges when they can.

Why the IB Middle Years Program
The success of students in the IB Diploma Program can be easily assessed through college acceptance rates and college success. Studies have shown the Diploma Program to prepare students for the persistence needed to succeed in college and graduate in four years. The MIddle Years Program was created by the IB to better prepare younger students for the challenges of the Diploma Program. At School Lane, grades 7-10 are aligned with the expectations of academic rigor of the Diploma Program. The emphasis on independent work and interdisciplinary thinking is key to building the creative and critical thinking skills needed for the Diploma Program and beyond. Please see this study of the Middle Years Program for more information.
