The Patrick Henry Post
August 26th, 2022
Welcome to Patrick Henry!
This week, we welcomed back 243 elementary students ranging from Preschoolers to 5th graders. We greeted them with smiles, hugs, laughter, games, activities, and lessons. We introduced them to our incredible staff. We toured the school. We practiced fire drills and safety measures. We made sure our students ate a healthy breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack. We sent home welcome gifts for every student that includes supplies, a brand new backpack, and books on their grade level so they can start their own home library. We brought them into the gym, the art room, the music room, the cafeteria, the garden, the Reading Room, and even our beautiful interactive hallways. We learned about our students and began the most important job we have - building safe, loving relationships with our students. We made every student feel like this was their new home away from home.
It was AMAZING! Take a look below for some of our highlights from the first week of school.
Calm Corners
Students across the school got to experience the magic of a new element to the classroom: The Calm Corner, complete with a bean bag chair, canopy, and relaxation tools to help students take a moment for themselves.
Relationship Building
Mr. Keplar's 4th graders worked together as a team as they built relationships with one another on the first day of school. In the process, they got to laugh, reconnect, and get to know each other as 4th graders!
Meet the Teacher
Our students were able to connect with their new classroom teacher this week. Ms. Willard and Tre'Mon became fast friends in Kindergarten right from the beginning!
Growing Up!
Ms. Hammock's own children are also students here at Patrick Henry, so their first day of school celebration photo took place in Ms. Hammock's classroom!
Family Support
Teachers' family, friends, and loved ones supported them throughout the first week of school with fresh flower deliveries, specialized notes, and treats that arrived in many different ways. We love our support from home!
Lunch as a Family
At Patrick Henry, we eat breakfast and lunch in our classrooms as a family. It is important for students to have down time to relax and socialize with one another, and to learn table manners at the same time. We love our Breakfast and Lunch in the Classroom program!
Hard at Work
Our students were working from Day 1! Though we have not started with deep content dives yet, we began this school year academically and relationally focused. Our students are already working together to complete projects and challenge their thinking.
New Materials
Our students were gifted with so many items this year with our ESSER funding. Students were happy and excited to see their classrooms set up and ready to welcome them back to Patrick Henry!
School Tour
All Patrick Henry students went on a whole school tour this week to make sure they knew where all of the essential locations were, and what the expectations were for each area. Students did a great job getting to know the school and how to be respectful of our physical space!
Ms. Munnelly
It is very common for preschool students (and their parents!) to shed a few tears on the first day of school, but this year, Ms. Lindsey Munnelly had students so engaged in story time, play time, and learning, that there were no tears cried in her preschool classroom!
Getting to Know You
Our students in every classroom had the opportunity to tell and show us a little bit about themselves this week. Before we can dive deep into the academic day, we need to know our students and their interests. Throughout the first week of school, all teachers worked hard to learn every child's name and their interests.
Ms. Brown
Ms. Natasha Brown's 5th graders were already hard at work even on the first day of school when we came by to visit. Ms. Brown's peaceful classroom is always a very Zen place to be, and students were already looking like the most responsible students in the building!
Ms. Willard
Ms. Megan Willard's Kindergarten class is a fun place to be with a beautiful new setup for her students! Keep an eye out for new supplies and books that are coming home for your child to keep!
Mrs. Ralphs
Mrs. Morgan Ralphs is seen here teaching the expectations of the gym to one of her preschool classes with the support of Ms. J. Bailey. The gym received a fresh coat of paint this summer and Mrs. Ralphs started the year off right with her students already hustling throughout her lesson!
The Art Room
Stop on by Ms. Kellie Godfrey's art space this school year to see a room with a few upgrades! Furniture has been moved, and projects will look a little different this year as Ms. Godfrey tries on a new way of approaching art that allows students even more creativity than previous years. Keep an eye out for artwork in your child's backpack!
Ms. Jami
Ms. Jami Fales has "looped" with her students, which means they get to have Ms. Jami two years in a row! Now that these students have turned into third graders, they came back to a brand new classroom with a completely different setup than last year!
Ms. Ivory
Ms. Rashidah Ivory's 2nd and 3rd grade students were already singing on day 1 to learn the routines and procedures of their new classroom. Here, Ms. Ivory is teaching them the line up song, which students were already memorizing by the end of the first day.
Encouraging Signage
When you visit Patrick Henry, one thing you should look for is our positive signs that are all around our students. We always want our students to feel welcome and encouraged throughout their school day!
Mr. Keplar
Mr. Nick Keplar's 4th grade students were already hard at work their first day of school as they learned not only their new classroom but they also taught Mr. Keplar about Patrick Henry! We are excited to welcome our newest addition to the Patrick Henry staff!
Ms. Hammock
Ms. Audrey Hammock's class this year has both 4th and 5th graders and you can see the beautiful maturity of her classroom, even during this first week of school!
Books Everywhere!
When you walk into Patrick Henry, one thing you won't be able to miss is the massive amounts of BOOKS we have everywhere! We believe in giving our students books of the highest interest level and on their reading level. We also sent books home with families this year to begin building their own family libraries!
Interactive Technology
Patrick Henry has a new Smartboard in every classroom, and our students love working with the interactive technology!
Ms. Young's Motto
Ms. Teresa Norton-Young's Early Childhood students are constantly encouraged that they can and will do great things every day!
Play-based Curriculum
Our Early Childhood department makes sure that learning is always fun and interactive! Our play-based curriculum engages students in the hands-on materials.
Ms. Hadley
Ms. Hadley's "Rabbit Room" spent this week learning the routines and procedures of their new classroom and they had an incredibly successful week as a new team!
Ms. Smith
Ms. Lindsey Smith's preschoolers began learning the Pledge of Allegiance right from the first day of school and they have made excellent progress in just one week of practice!
Ms. Munnelly
Ms. Lindsey Munnelly's preschool students started their week by learning each other's names and learning (or re-learning) the classroom procedures. The beauty of preschool is that our teachers get the students for two years in a row, so our P4s are true experts when they come back for their second year!
A Special Space for Everyone
All of the classrooms at Patrick Henry are designed with children in mind, and one of the most important things a child needs to feel safe is to know that they have ownership over this space. Cubbies, closets, hooks, desks, and classrooms become their new special space to make sure they feel at home when they are at Patrick Henry.
Ms. Womack
Ms. Shelley Womack is returning to Patrick Henry for her second year on staff, but it is her first year as a Preschool Lead Classroom Teacher. Previously, "Ms. W." was our Building Substitute Teacher, and it is a joy to see her in her permanent classroom this year!
Open House at Patrick Henry
On Wednesday evening, we welcomed our most important stakeholders into our school for an in-person Open House: our families! Parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and siblings were able to come and see their child's classroom, meet the teacher, and hear a little bit of what their child will experience this year at Patrick Henry. Our staff loved every minute of meeting our families and welcoming them back in person! We have lots of in person events this school year, and we hope to see you at Patrick Henry!
