Zebra Family Update
September 2023 - It's a Great Day to Be a Zebra!
Our Focus for the 2023/2024 School Year
Ensure learning through quality best first instruction, intervention, building culture and community, and PLC work*. Continue to make LHS a destination for quality education and an amazing high school experience!
What does this look like for your Zebra?
CULTURE: Celebrate all that makes LHS a great place to be! Create opportunities for our students, families and staff to engage in our school and find their place as a Fighting Zebra.
Our framework is YDI to support culture and community
We will invite student voice through our new District Student Senate our our Site Student Congress
BEST FIRST INSTRUCTION: Continual learning as a team of educators and students.
Focus on learning rather than teaching
LHS is AVID Sitewide - AVID is our framework to support best first instruction
INTERVENTION: Build systems that support learning and set our students up for success in their college and/or career goals.
Focusing on all students through quality, data driven intervention. Placing focus on freshmen, English language learners, homeless and foster youth, and low socioeconomic youth to support success
We’ll use a tool called SMARTPASS to support effective intervention times/space/activity this year!
We’ll continue to build a strong MTSS system (MTSS = multi tiered systems of support - focusing on academics, attendance, and behavior) and train in PBIS (PBIS = positive behavior intervention supports) to support all students
We continue to offer incredible supports through our counselors, Wellness Center team, the Foundry, and trusted adults!
PLCs*: Use data to drive decision and make decisions that are best for our students
Focusing on the 4 questions from the DuFour’s Learning by Doing
What must they know? How do we know when they’ve learned it? What do we do when they haven’t? What do we do when they have?
*PLC stands for "professional learning community" and these are the collaborative grade/subject/focus level meetings our teachers attend on Mondays when we dismiss school early.

Academic Support through LHS Peer Tutoring
LHS offers an incredible tutoring program that is designed to help students get their homework done, get organized, to ask questions, to get reteaching, and even to take care of test retakes (for some teachers!). We are prepared to offer support in all content areas taught at LHS. Tutoring will start on Wednesday, 9/6.
Where:
- In Person at LHS Library or online using Google Meet - code: LHStutoring
When:
- M-F from 7:15-8:15am
- M from 2:30-4:30pm
- T-Th from 3:30-5:30pm
Keep in mind, that the library hosts our tutoring program to support students with learning. The library is not open for hanging out during tutoring times - all students must be actively involved in some type of academic activity during the tutoring program hours if they are in the library.

College & Career Update
September is a busy month at the College and Career Center. Click Here to see what services we offer. This time of the year, we are busy scheduling college visits on campus. Now is the time to start planning for what colleges might interest you. It's never too early to start. Students at any grade level may attend the presentations that are held in the library during intervention times. You can view the list here for updated days, times and to register. Students must sign to attend. A reminder to use our platform, Pathful Explore, to get you started. With interactive tools and assessments, students can discover diverse career pathways.

Wellness Center
The Wellness Center is open and ready to support students. As a reminder to families, if your student is struggling with their mental health and needs a safe place to land during the day, we are here to help. Students seeking wellness support simply ask their teachers for a wellness center break in room 14 where they will be greeted and offered space to talk or take a break for 10-15 minutes.
Welcome Stephanie
Please join us in welcoming our newest Wellness Center staff member, Stephanie George-Mello. Stephanie is an MFT intern with William Jessup University. Stephanie will be bolstering our existing counseling and therapy services, as well as supporting the drop in needs of our students. She is incredibly excited to be with us and we're thrilled to have her.
*NEW* Virtual Calming Room
We are thrilled to be able to bring the community our first iteration of the virtual calming room. This is a free and discreet website that we have curated for students who struggle with finding and identifying coping skills. We know that not all students will show up to the wellness center for support, and that's okay. Our goal is to remove as many barriers as we can to student wellness and success. We hope to continue to tweak and improve the resources on this page as the year goes on.
The Foundry
The LHS/PHS Foundry is located in Portable 65 (one of the portables on the north side of the LHS parking lot. They are open on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school for now. Be watching for expanded hours!
For more information about the Foundry, reach out to site director, Emilee at Emilee@foundrylincoln.org.
