Black History Month Figure Highlight
Leontyne Price was the first African American to be a leading performer with the Metropolitan Opera debuting in 1961. It was the beauty of her voice that drew in her audience. She received international acclaim and regularly appeared in major opera houses including Royal Opera House, San Francisco Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and La Scala. She performed operas for 20 years and, rightfully, earned her place as a leading performer of the century.
