A Note From the Board
Rev. Dawn Fortune Achieves Fellowship
On February 1, the Ministerial Fellowship Committee (MFC) of the UUA advised our minister, Rev. Dawn Fortune, that Committee voted to grant them Full Fellowship among UU ministers. The MFC will formally grant Fellowship to Rev. Dawn at the Service of the Living Tradition at the UUA General Assembly in June of 2021.
Fellowship, of course, is a recognition of the care and leadership the Rev. Dawn has shown here at UUCSJS. We were grateful for those efforts before MFC recognized them.
As a representative of the UUCJSJ Board of Trustees, I congratulate Rev. Dawn on this significant achievement.
Kit Marlowe,
President
UUCSJS Board of Trustees

February Meeting of the Book Club
The book club will meet Friday, February 19 at 7pm on ZOOM to discuss In the Country of Women by Susan Straight.
Susan Straight’s memoir traces the immigration and history of the women who came before her three daughters. A moving tribute to ancestors. In the Country of Women is a book about resilience and love that beautifully celebrates the American immigrant story.
Barb Morell will be leading the discussion and all are welcome to join. Contact Barb or email uucsjsadmin@gmail.com for more information.
March's Book Club pick is Tell Me How it Ends by Valeria Luiselli.
Special Event - Vocal Activist Melanie Demoré
Vocal activist Melanie Demoré is coming to New Jersey UU congregations! She will be presenting a Zoom workshop on February 24 from 7PM to 8:30PM.
The event is being sponsored by our congregations in Summit, Montclair, Morristown, Princeton, and Cherry Hill. Melanie DeMore has been a formidable presence onstage at such noted venues as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, international folk music festivals from Europe to Cuba to New Zealand. She has shared the stage with some of the world’s most notable musicians and political activists from Gloria Steinem, Odetta, Pete Seeger, and Judy Collins to Ed Asner, Holly Near, Ronnie Gilbert, and Ani Di Franco.
There would not be a charge for congregants to register, but there will be one (or more) organizations listed to receive donations from attendees.
One group we will link to is:
Here you can read more about what to expect, from a recent event in Milwaukee.
Biography
Melanie DeMore's website describes her this way:
She’s traveled the world, was a founding member of the Grammy-nominated vocal ensemble Linda Tillery and the Cultural Heritage Choir and is constantly amazed by her life. But nothing is closer to her heart than bringing people together wherever she is to experience the healing power of music. Whether she’s performing solo, leading stick pounding workshops, doing residencies with choirs all over the country, or teaching Sound Awareness to sixth graders, baby boomers, or senior citizens, one thing is certain: her mission is to make sure you unlock the key to experiencing yourself in all your Glory and return home with the very same excitement and passion for living that she herself has. When she comes your way, her energy will charge the very air you breathe like a meteor shower, so get ready to rise up!
LAST CALL!
Opportunity for Brief and Painless Participation in a Sunday Service!
Have you read a poem lately that you were awed by, or do you have a favorite poem that you love?
Maybe you write poetry yourself and would like to read it to an audience.
Deb Dagavarian is putting together a Sunday service on April 11 on poetry. The theme for April is “Becoming.”
You can pre-record yourself on your phone and Jess will put it together with others for the service. This is a great chance for someone who doesn’t enjoy speaking in front of others to participate in a service. You don’t even need to be a member of the congregation to do this!
All ages are welcome.
And feel free to select more than one poem, especially if you wrote it yourself.
Please email or text Deb soon to get added to her list. For more information, email uucsjsadmin@gmail.com.
