Principal's Notes
This week kicked off with Community Meeting hosted by our 3rd grade students and was focused on the theme of inclusiveness. We had a huge turnout of parents, grandparents, and caregivers as well! Three parents from the PTO also came to share information about the Variety Show coming up on May 9th. Tuesday's "snow day" was a dud, but I'm hopeful everyone enjoyed a day of rest and relaxation before Valentine's Day on Wednesday. Love and kindness was in the air at Cole School with Valentine's exchanges happening in every room. It has been a great week!
Next week is the February Vacation Week. While we will miss all of our students, we wish all of you a safe, relaxing, and fun-filled week with family and friends. Whether there are plans for a tropical vacation or a staycation with fun activities at home, the gift of time with loved ones is so valuable. Enjoy that time!
Way to go, Cole School! We set a school kindness goal of initiating or returning a greeting when walking by someone. One of the bus drivers told us that almost 90% of the students on his bus wished him a Happy Valentine's Day as they got off the bus. Keep up the great work with that kindness goal!
February Principal Read Alouds took place in many classrooms this week. I chose to red the book Red by De Kinder. This book clearly illustrates a bullying behavior (repeatedly whispering, pointing, and laughing at someone) and shows the courage it takes to stand up to a bully. It is an excellent story that offered many points for discussion including remembering not to point at people as it is considered rude. Ask your child if they heard this story yet and what they thought of it.
When we return after vacation, we're looking forward to a visit from Queen Elizabeth! Thanks to the PTO for bringing Sheryl Faye once again to Cole School to share Queen Elizabeth's life with us. Thank you for helping us bring excellent enrichment programs to Cole School.
I was at a meeting on Thursday morning and wasn't able to announce the Magnificent Meerkats. So many students were asking about it as they are looking forward to the announcement each week. We announced the names of 35 Magnificent Meerkats who are showing consistent expected behaviors at Cole School. Some of the specific reasons for the nominations include: showing whole body listening, treating others as they want to be treated, giving school work 100% effort, and going above and beyond to help others. Way to go, Meerkats!

Specialists' Scoop
This week students had numerous cardiovascular exercise opportunities traveling through the Jungle Obstacle Course! Using their imagination and self control students climbed over the waterfall, swung over the crocodiles using a rope, rode the turtles, climbed over the mountain, worked their way through the bamboo forest and rolled over the fallen tree. The Jungle Obstacle Course has been a fun tradition over the years that was started by former Cole School physical education teacher Mrs. Minier.

We are now adding markers, pens, and wooden and mechanical pencils to our collections for recycling. We are working in partnership with Staples, which has recently added them to their list of materials that can be recycled.
