Welcome back to school for the 2022-2023 school year! I trust that you and your family enjoyed a fun and relaxing summer and are settling back into the school "groove." Please make yourself familiar with the information and resources shared in this quarterly newsletter.

Did you know that October is National Dyslexia Awareness Month? National Dyslexia Awareness Week is October 4-October 10. Please wear RED on October 5th to help CISD raise dyslexia awareness and to show the world your support!

The student who struggles with reading and spelling often puzzles teachers and parents. The student displays the ability to learn in the absence of print and receives the same classroom instruction that benefits most children; however, the student continues to struggle with some or all of the many facets of reading and spelling. This student may be a student with dyslexia.

Texas Educator Code (TEC) 38.003 defines dyslexia in the following way:

"Dyslexia" means a disorder of constitutional origin manifested by a difficulty in learning to

read, write, or spell, despite conventional instruction, adequate intelligence, and sociocultural

opportunity."

The following are the primary reading/spelling characteristics of dyslexia:

• Difficulty reading words in isolation
• Difficulty accurately decoding unfamiliar words
• Difficulty with oral reading (rate, accuracy, prosody)
• Difficulty with spelling

The Texas State Library and Archives Commission for Students with dyslexia or other related disorders has resources for you, including audiobooks.
