Shark Tales Weekly Update
Sheiko Elementary: September 15, 2023
PRINCIPAL UPDATE
Happy Friday, Sheiko Sharks!
Wow! What an amazing week! Thank you for coming to Open House! We had a great turn-out. It made my heart so happy to see so many parents in the building. Thank you for supporting our teachers and your students. It really means the world to us.
Our "Big Announcement" this week is that we start our NWEA reading testing on Monday. Please be sure your child does the following:
- Gets enough sleep
- Eats a good breakfast
- Is on time to school
- Brings a snack to school, if possible
Remember, students can enter the building at 8:55. This gives them time to eat breakfast, if needed, and get to class on time. If you can please avoid scheduling any appointments this week, that would also be very helpful. Thank you for all of your support! It is very appreciated.
We wish you a wonderful weekend!

PICTURE DAY IS COMING!
Picture day will be on Thursday, October 5th!
NEWS FROM OUR SPEACIALS CLASSES
Mrs. Virta - MUSIC
This week, students brainstormed what attributes are important for the music activities we do (singing, moving, playing instruments, listening and creating). The students thought of great qualities: kindness, empathy, safety, respect, listening, teamwork and more. Next week, we will put their ideas into a social contract for all to sign, including me.
We began the year practicing our singing skills. We discovered that a round is a song in which voices sing the same melody but begin at different times. We have been singing “Rockin’ Frere Jacques” a two-part round with our classmates.
Mrs. VanNostrand - iCENTER
n the iCenter, book check out has begun. Students will be able to check out books each week. The hope is that they are keeping books for at least two weeks as they begin to read more complex texts. Please be sure your child knows it is ok for books to be left at school or kept at home. We have also explored Canvas, and your student should be able to show you the online book options. One example is Tumblebooks. Be sure to check it out!
Ms. Tucker-Whelan - ART
In art class, we have been painting our river rocks to learn about the "ripple of kindness" to go along with the book, "Each Kindness" that we read as an entire school. We can't wait to show you the finished product. Be sure to ask your child about it!

FRIENDLY REMINDERS
We know the fall days are upon us, but please remember that there are no spaghetti straps, stomachs showing, or super short shorts when the weather is warm.
We are asking that students leave their smart watches at home. They have proven to be a huge distraction to teaching and learning. Students may have phones (but totally not necessary!) as long as they are powered down and in their backpacks. Students will have one reminder to put them away. Otherwise, these items will be turned into the office for parent pick up if they are out.Thank you for your support in this matter!
BLESSINGS IN A BACKPACK
Dear Parents of West Bloomfield School District Students,
If your child is a student (3 to 26 years of age) in the West Bloomfield Schools, s/he can also participate in the 2023-24 Blessings in a Backpack program. This program sends six non-perishable meals home each Friday of the school year. Its goal is to make sure that no child goes hungry on the weekend. Run by volunteers, there is NO cost to you.
To enroll in this program, please fill out the form below and return it to your school office or email it to katherinesheiko@hotmail.com. This registers your child/ren in the Blessings program and alerts us to any allergies they might have. The first backpack of food will be distributed to your child at his/her local school the first week of October.
Please use this link to enroll today.
AMAZON WISH LIST
We are doing a special project in art class to go along with our "Choose Kindness" theme. First, teachers are kicking off the theme by reading, "Each Kindness". There is a part in the story where a rock is dropped in the water and the reader learns about the "ripple effect" that kindness can have in the world. In art class, students will be painting rocks, but we still need more rocks. Please consider donating rocks by using the link below and having the rocks shipped right to Sheiko Elementary! We thank you for your support!

Please make sure your student stops by the office to let us know that it is their birthday. They can receive their birthday recognition from the principal.
Thank you for your support and cooperation.

FOOD ALERGY INFORMATION
Dear Parents/Guardians:
There are students in our school that have severe allergies. It is important that any snack or treats brought in are sesame and peanut/tree nut free. This includes products that are made in a facility that processes nuts. Snack/treats CANNOT be homemade, either. Please help by reading the labels before you buy the snack/treat.
Here is a website that you can use when purchasing snacks/treats for your child: https://snacksafely.com. This guide lists many foods that are safe to bring into the classroom (many of them are snacks you might eat within your own home).
Thank you for your support and cooperation.
Sincerely,
Blaine McDowell

Dear Parent/Guardian:
Sheiko Elementary receives Federal Title 1 funds to assist students in meeting state achievement standards. This letter lets you know about your right to request information about the qualifications of classroom staff working with your child and about student assessments given during the school year.
Title 1 schools must meet federal regulations related to teacher qualifications as defined in the ESEA (Elementary and Secondary Education Act). These regulations allow you to learn more about your child’s teachers’ training and credentials. At any time, you may ask:
If the teacher meets state qualifications and certification requirements for the grade level and subject he/she is teaching.
If the teacher has received an emergency or conditional certification through which state qualifications were waived.
What undergraduate or graduate degrees the teacher holds, and major(s) or area(s) of concentration.
Whether your child receives help from a paraprofessional, and if so his/her qualifications.
Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) which was signed into law in December 2015 and reauthorizes the ESEA contains additional parent right to know request options, such as:
Information on policies regarding student participation in assessments and procedures for opting out.
Information on required assessments including:
Subject matter tested
Purpose of the test
Source of the required (if applicable)
Amount of time it take students to complete the test
Time and format of distributing results
At any time, you may request any or all of the information above from me.
Sheiko staff are fully committed to helping your child develop the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in school and beyond. We appreciate your support and partnership as work to provide the best education for your child.
Sincerely,
Blaine McDowell
