Principals' Message
Greetings Hiteon Community,
We want to thank everyone for a very successful start to the school year! School life at Hiteon is amazing!! Being back at school with our students in person has filled all our "Hiteon Hearts." Students are doing well with the re-imagined school day, adhering to all the health and safety protocols. In the first month back, we have had a few Covid-19 cases that have resulted in some quarantines, but overall we have not seen it spread within the school. We have appreciated parents letting the school know if their child(ren) is ill and keeping students home until the nurse calls to check-in or the too sick for school symptoms are gone; please refer to the graphic attached in this newsletter. All in the community very much appreciate everyones' vigilance and support.
Today we had our first all-school assembly. Due to Covid 19 and all our safety guidlines, we are continuing to do them virtually. It was a fun-filled action-packed event. We are continuing to work on kindness at Hiteon. Students are working for an all-school reward (Hat Day). Once we fill our school bind to the top with Kindness pom-poms, we will have our "Hat Day." We are almost there!!
During October, we are beginning to focus on being "Brave" at Hiteon. During the assembly, we discussed what being brave means and looks like at school. Below are a few examples of being brave. Please encourage your student(s) to demonstrate this quality.
Stand up for others and do what is right
Continue to try when things are difficult or challenging
See failure as an opportunity to grow and learn
Take responsibility when we make mistakes
Kind Regards.

Notifying School of your Student's Attendance
Attendance habits are set the very first week of the school year, so please start building good attendance habits early. As a parent, you can help by establishing a regular bedtime and morning routine. You can also avoid medical appointments during school hours, as well as extended trips when school is in session.
If your student does need to be absent or leave school early, be sure to follow these guidelines:
- Email your teacher at least 24 hours prior if possible.
- Inform them that your student will be missing school or being picked up early.
- Please give detailed reasons for the absence.
- Teachers emails follow this format: first name_last name@beaverton.k12.or.us
- Include the office team on the email as well. This is incase the teacher is also absent the office staff will also be aware.
- Principal Secretary's email is martha_spinks@beaverton.k12.or.us
- Registrar's email is valerie_sinnott@beaverton.k12.or.us
- We ask that you also call the Attendance line. Again include details regarding the absence.

Hiteon Covid-19 Weekly Home Testing
Beaverton School District, in collaboration with OHSU, is offering weekly Covid-19 testing to our students. Your child received a packet from OHSU yesterday. Please read the information and make a decision about testing. Included will be a testing permission form. Fill out the form and return it to your child's teacher as soon as possible. All permission forms must be returned by October 7th. Classroom teachers will collect forms and turn them into our Main Office.
The testing will be home-based. If you give permission for your child to participate, a weekly test kit will be sent home with your child. It will be returned to school by your child the next day. There will be drop-off stations for your child to place their sealed test kit bag on when they enter their respective doors in the morning (Purple, Yellow, or Green Doors). From there, Hiteon staff will place the individual test kits in a cooler for OHSU to pick up.
We don't know which day of the week this will occur at Hiteon, but it will be a consistent day each week.
OHSU will only communicate with you regarding test results due to confidentiality. If your child tests positive for Covid-19, we ask that you let us know at Hiteon.
We know this is an extra lift for all, however, we believe this is an important step in assuring the virus doesn't spread within our community, allowing us to maintain in-person instruction.
If you have questions about this testing/program, please call our Main Office.
Thank you for your opt in consideration.

Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) 3rd, 4th and 5th Grades
In October, all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students in Beaverton will be administered the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) Screener. This 30-minute test measures students’ learned reasoning abilities through verbal/picture analogies, number analogies and figure matrices.
Currently the main purpose for administering the CogAT is to identify students for TAG in the area of intellectual ability. Students who score at the 97th percentile or above on the CogAT screener will be invited to test with the full version of the CogAT that is used for potential TAG identification. The full version of the CogAT will be given in late October. For more information about testing, please contact your school’s TAG facilitator.

TAG Testing
he purpose of this announcement is to give notice to all parents that the Parent Information Forms, used to nominate your student for talented and gifted services, are available in the school office and on the District TAG website. The school secretary should have copies of this form. A completed Parent Information Form alerts the school of the need to review a child’s files, collect behavioral, learning, and/or performance information, and discuss with the teacher the possible need for testing in the area(s) of strength.
All TAG-related testing for the 2021-22 school year will be by nomination on an on-going basis at all grade levels. Achievement tests will be given to all 4th and 5th graders using the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS). Oregon Statewide Assessments (when available), will also be used. Students in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade will be given the CogAT Screener. Students who score at the 97th percentile will take the Post Screener that can be used for TAG identification.
Nomination forms are available on the TAG Website.

International Walk & Roll to School Day
On October 6th, 2021 join people from around the world as we celebrate International Walk + Roll to School Day. Walk, bike, scooter, skate, roll, bus or carpool to school and be entered to win fun prizes.
The grand prize winner will earn a new scooter with helmet! Walking and rolling to school is great for kids, our community and our planet. Here are the top five reasons:
1. Fewer vehicles driving to school reduces traffic congestion and carbon emissions near schools and in our parking lots.
2. More people walking and rolling builds school community and makes routes safer.
3. Physical activity boosts kids’ readiness to learn and improves their physical and mental health.
4. Kids have fun with friends and bond with families while walking and rolling together.
5. Being outside builds independence and lifelong transportation skills.

Meet Mr. Ribner our Social Worker
Hello and happy Fall, everyone!
My name is Tim Ribner; I am a part-time social worker at Hiteon and am excited to get to know you and your student(s). This is my first year in the district and is also the first time that Hiteon has had a social worker on-site. Good news!
My Hiteon schedule is: Mondays and Thursdays every week; and Tuesdays every other week.
While here, my goals include supporting and advocating for students’ social and emotional well-being. I believe this is vital to the education process, particularly after the challenges with long-distance learning and the pandemic. Also, I strive to support you all as caregivers of your Hiteon student(s).
In particular, I would like to let you know about some current community resources available to Hiteon families:
Food-We can provide you with food boxes from Pacific Foods; there are also opportunities to “shop” at various Beaverton schools throughout the week for free (while supplies last). Please contact me for this schedule. The Oregon Food Bank also has sites that I can provide to you for food pickup.
Clothes-I can order a clothes bag or specific items for your student for each season. Also, we have a limited number of vouchers for clothes shopping if you are interested.
Mental/Physical Health-I can provide options for mental health providers in the community, as well as doctors, dentists, and other health care providers. I can also help you navigate health insurance questions for you and your student.
Please feel free to reach out to me with any requests or further questions regarding all of this. You can write to me on ParentSquare or by email: tim_ribner@beaverton.k12.or.us. At this point, to reach me by phone, please call the front office at 503-356-2140 and ask for me. Thanks, and I look forward to talking with you.
Be well!

Your Student’s Public Library Card
Remember that public library card your student received last year or the year before? It still works! Get access to all the library’s online resources, homework help, and e-books and downloadable audiobooks, and check out up to 5 books or audiobooks at a time from your local library.
Here’s a video all about the WCCLS Student Library Card: https://youtu.be/1A0tI1g5qd0
WCCLS Student Library Card, Updates for Staff:
Washington County Cooperative Library Services (WCCLS) is working with the other school districts in our county to get library cards to students hands!
Because of this a few things are changing:
· What the card is called: Youth Access Card is now called the WCCLS Student Library Card
· When and how students will get their cards: New Cards will be mailed to student homes. Expect them around winter break (we’ll be in touch once we have a firmer date)
Most everything else is staying the same, including:
· Student’s Library Card number is still their 6-digit student ID number (lunch number) with BSD in front, Example: BSD123456
· Default password is still the last 4 digits of the student ID number ( Example: 3456)
· Full access to Online Resources, including homework help, e-books, and downloadable audiobooks
· Ability to check out 5 books or audiobooks from any WCCLS library
· No Late Fees! (For anybody!)
If you would like me or another library staff member to talk to you, your staff, or your classes about their library cards, or anything else we would be happy to!
Please let me know what questions, ideas, and help you need from the library,
Jennifer Wolf
