Surging Anxiety Among Adolescents: What’s Going On?
In this article in Psychology Today, psychiatrist Ralph Lewis (University of Toronto) says that in recent years, more and more young people have been coming to him with anxiety disorders. He suggests four possible explanations:
• There may be a genuine increase in distress among young people for any number of reasons – there’s a lot to be distressed about these days!
• Kids seem more willing to report mental health issues. Before, they were reluctant to admit they had problems, and would come to a psychiatrist’s office only at the insistence of concerned parents. Now more adolescents are self-diagnosing – and are disappointed if Lewis says their problems aren’t serious enough for clinical treatment.
• This increased openness may be encouraged by media reports of widespread mental health problems among adolescents.
Mental health problems like anxiety can be mapped on the left and right sides of a bell-shaped curve, says Lewis. With anxiety, the majority of people are in the mentally healthy, average bulge in the middle. At the right-hand side, he says, are those “prone to experience anxiety more intensely, more frequently, and for longer durations than others, causing those individuals greater distress and impairment in their functioning.” They might have a moderate disorder or, at the tail end of the curve, a disabling condition requiring clinical treatment.
On the left side of the continuum are those who experience unusually little anxiety. These people may be courageous and cool under pressure, but they may also take unnecessary risks and come across as emotionally insensitive. “At the extreme of this end of the spectrum,” says Lewis, “some might even be predisposed to be psychopaths.”
Interestingly, he says, the extremes have been important to human survival: “Diversity of traits is essential for a species to survive and evolve as environments change; a trait that is a weakness in one environment at one time and place might well turn out to be a strength in another environment at another time and place.”
“Something has changed,” Lewis concludes. Perhaps “the cultural changes in society are significant enough that young people, now able to talk fluently about mental health, are looking to medicine as a way to explain the normal, if painful, parts of life.”
“The Anxiety Boom” by Ralph Lewis in Psychology Today, November/December 2021 (Vol. 54, #6, pp. 28-29); Lewis can be reached at ralph.lewis@utoronto.ca.

Stress is real [repeat]
Now that we are back to a 5 day a week, full schedule, many of the "benefits" of the COVID schedule are no longer in place and are causing stress for our children.
Please talk with your child about:
- their grades: ask them to open PowerSchool and show you their grades; talk through any missing work (with all your love, guide them to email their teacher, make a plan to complete the missing work).
- their work schedule (is there a world they may need less hours after school? do we need to wait to work until the weekends?)
- their time schedule (how much time do they need outside of school to complete assignments of make up missing work?)
- their attendance (they need to be in school, in every class, every day; and we miss them when they are not there).

NCBCE has officially launched our third annual Ready, Set, App! competition. Ready, Set, App is a mobile app building competition for NC high schoolers. Students not only have the opportunity to compete in this competition, but we also have a paid internship! RSA interns are high school students who have previous app building experience and work as peer mentors to the teams competing. The internship is part-time, paid, and a unique work-based learning opportunity. If this is an opportunity a student you know would be interested in, please encourage them to apply. To find more information about the internship and the link to apply, please visit www.ncbce.org/ready-set-app. The intern application closes on November 5th, so act quickly! If you have any questions about RSA or the internship, please feel free to reach out to me at ciera.tucker@nc.gov.

2022 Essay Topic Historic Preservation in North Carolina
Ordinary Folk: How They Shaped Their Communities in North Carolina
Our North Carolina counties had many pioneers and natives who were stalwarts in their communities and helped shape them. They were not famous and not often found in history books. They were just common settlers of our state who fought for our country, lived as good citizens in their communities, farmed the land, made beautiful quilts and furniture, led local militias, founded local churches, were teachers, etc. The essay should address a particular family, person, or community of early North Carolinians who shaped your local or a surrounding county. What were their habits, traditions, educational opportunities, jobs, entertainment, skills, etc.? What evidence do you see today that was left by these early citizens? Local museums and historical societies would be a good place to begin your research. The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts and NCPedia are two other good sources for beginning your research.
Remember you must document from where you obtained a particular piece of information, including citations within the body of your paper and a list of works consulted at the end.
The scholarship link can be found at https://www.ncdames.org/florence-kidder-memorial-scholarship and by clicking on "Proceed to Online Application."
We've had quite a few students from SWE receive the local FKM scholarship. They give state scholarships and then local committe's award smaller scholarships. Let me know if you have questions!

NC School of Science and Math
As you know, ECPS already has a partnership with the NC School of Science and Math, but recently, they received a grant to offer more opportunities to a school district across the state, and they chose us!!
I am very excited to offer this opportunity to our students:
1) NCSSM will offer an Honors Biomedical Engineering course in the spring of 2022 (January 18 to May 27) to a cohort of 20-25 ECPS high school students. It would be taught from 1:30-2:45. I will share our district calendar so they know when our students are not in session. You will have to determine where students will be housed for the class (media center perhaps).
2) NCSSM will provide the instructor and any materials that are needed for the course. Students would need their laptop/chromebook.
3) ECPS will identify the students for the course.
*Students may be more successful in the course if they have earned a B or better in Math II Honors or an A in Math II.
4) The course will be taught virtually and synchronously via Zoom.
Here is a brief description of the course:
"This course introduces students to biomedical engineering, including biomaterials, biomechanics, bioelectricity, biomedical devices, and measurements, as well as design. Through activities and collaborative design projects, students explore and experience biomedical engineering principles, the engineering design process, and problem solving and troubleshooting."
Here is a video and description of the course: https://uniapp.ncssm.edu/registrar/catalog/course_detail.php?mycourse=73015

Something to think about...
"Being yourself is a continuous effort.
There is always another expectation placed upon you, another person pulling you toward their preferences, another nudge from society to act a certain way.
It's a daily battle to be yourself, not merely what the world wants you to be."

Students who do not submit an ACT or SAT test score must meet the minimum weighted GPA requirement of 2.5 to be considered for undergraduate admissions.
For those students that would still like to take the ACT/SAT, here is the information you will need:
What are College Admissions Tests?
There are two tests, ACT and SAT, used by nearly all four-year colleges in NC as one of the admissions criteria. They are alike and different in several ways. Your best strategy is to Google: Compare ACT and SAT and take a few minutes reviewing the search results. Some students perform better on one than the other. Many students want to take each at least once. ACT & SAT scores can be used for placement purposes at community colleges as well.
What score do I need to get into college?
Many four-year college admissions are competitive. You can find the average scores for a particular school on CFNC.org or the college website. Universities in the UNC system require a minimum of 880 (math + reading) and 17 Composite Score on the ACT. Admission offices practice superscoring, meaning that if you make a higher score on one subtest at one sitting and higher score on another subtest on another test day, these may be combined to yield your best performance. (Reminder that UNC System schools aren't requiring test scores. Check with the schools you are applying to in order to determine their testing policy for admission.
When should I ACT or SAT?
We encourage you to take two of the same tests whether it’s the ACT or SAT. It’s up to you! All students take the ACT as a Junior so you already have one set of scores. Many college deadlines are in the early spring so it’s best to do your testing in the fall. Some schools do have rolling admissions so it’s best to look at the deadlines for colleges you wish to attend!
What does registration involve?
Both tests ask for extensive information regarding your high school education and your plans for the future. You may want to set aside some time to complete the registration. You will be asked to upload a clear face picture. When registering, remember to use the code of the schools in which you have an interest in applying. You should be able to send scores to four colleges for free. You will have to pay for any additional score reports beyond the four. There is a fee for each test and you may pay with debit/credit cards. If your family meets certain economic criteria, you may qualify for a fee waiver. See your counselor for information on fee waivers.
How far in advance do I need to register?
Deadlines are listed in the charts below. Don’t wait until the last minute. You will also need a photo ID when you arrive at the test site. If you do not have a Photo ID see your counselor for other options.
Register for the SAT: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/register
Register for the ACT: https://www.act.org/content/act/en/products-and-services/the-act/registration.html
How can I prepare for these tests?
At minimum, you will want to visit the ACT and SAT sites to read about the format of the test and see some sample questions. Each site will offer additional tools. Khan Academy is also a good resource for test prep.
2022 Flight Academy Summer Program
The 2022 Chief of Staff of the Air Force (CSAF) Private Pilot Scholarship Program (AFJROTC Flight Academy) will begin accepting applications on 30 August – 5 November 2021. The Air Force is funding scholarships for AFJROTC cadets to attend private pilot training at public/private universities during the summer of 2022. Instructors “should” nominate and submit applications for all eligible, highly motivated cadets for the AFJROTC Flight Academy Scholarship. Complete packages may be submitted any time during the application window but no later than the suspense date.
Applicants must be current sophomore, junior, or senior AFJROTC cadets (active or reserve status), who understand they are volunteering for a scholarship to a public/private university. There is no military service commitment or obligation, nor does program completion justify acceptance to military service, ROTC scholarship, or military academy appointment. Applicants must be at least 17 years old by 1 July 2022, obtain a minimum fitness assessment score of 50, and have a minimum and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better (on a 4.0 scale) to be nominated.
Cadets/instructors must complete an application via WINGS, have parental/legal guardians’ signed approval, and have endorsements from the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor (SASI) and school counselor. Cadets must complete an online aviation qualification test (AQT) comprised of five (5) sub-tests of the following: math, table reading, aviation information, instrument comprehension, and weight perception. The AQT testing window will open between 7 Sep – 3 Nov 21. Cadets can be administered the AQT only once. An AQT practice website has been created at www.aqtpractice.com. Feel free to visit this website and provide the link to interested cadets immediately. They may take this practice test as many times as they wish.
NOTE 1: The AQT must remain proctored for testing integrity, and instructors will serve as exam proctors. Cadets and instructors must coordinate to schedule the date and time for testing at the school site. The Air Force prohibits at-home testing as a testing site location.
If there are any application questions, please email jrotc.fa@au.af.edu and email all WINGS-related questions to the Help Desk at jrotc.jrs.contractor.support@au.af.edu.
NOTE 2: The Flight Academy Team intends to use the below application/selection timeline; however, please know these dates are subject to change.
The official notification will be distributed on Monday, 30 August 2021, for your review and action. Extensions will not be granted beyond the deadline; immediate action is imperative to ensure cadets’ application is submitted accurately.
Below are important Flight Academy dates:
30 Aug 2021 – 5 Nov 2021: Application Window (ALL)
7 Sep 2021 – 3 Nov 2021: Complete Aviation Qualifying Test (AQT)

How does my GPA work?
10 Point Grading Scale
A: 90 – 100
B: 80 – 89
C: 70 – 79
D: 60 – 69
F: < 59
GPA Calculation (Based on NC State Board of Education Policy # GCS-L-004 dated 1/8/2015) – Each high school student has a transcript, which is a record of cumulative grades earned during 9th – 12th grades. On the high school transcript, students receive an unweighted GPA calculation, which does not award any extra quality points for honors, AP, or college transferable classes. The weighted GPA calculation awards extra quality points for honors, AP, and college transferrable classes. The weighted GPA is used to calculate class rank at the end of each semester.

Importance of attendance
Showing up for school has a huge impact on a student’s academic success. Even as children grow older and more independent, families play a key role in making sure students get to school every day and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and on the job.
Note: Students should not come to school while feeling ill, having fever, etc.
Parent & Coach Athletic Communication
Parent-Coach Relationship
Parenting and coaching are both extremely difficult responsibilities. By establishing an understanding of each position, we are better able to accept the actions of the other and provide a greater benefit to children. As parents, when your child is involved in our program, you have the right to understand what expectations are placed on him/her. This begins with clear communication from the coach of the sport.
Communication coaches expect from athletes & parents
Concerns expressed directly to the coach.
Notification of any schedule conflicts in advance.
Notification of illness or injury as soon as possible.
As your child becomes involved in his/her programs at middle and high school, he/she will experience some of the most rewarding moments of their lives. It is important to understand that there also may be times when things do not go the way you and your child wish. At these times, discussion with the coach is encouraged. It is the first and most integral step to understanding and resolution.
Appropriate/Inappropriate concerns to discuss with coaches
The following topics are appropriate for discussion.
The treatment of your child.
Ways to help your child improve.
Concerns about your child’s behavior.
It is very difficult to accept your child not playing as much as you had hoped. Coaches are professionals. They make decisions based on what they believe to be best for all student-athletes involved. As you have seen from the list above, certain things can be and should be discussed with your child’s coach. The three items listed below should be left to the discretion of the coach:
Playing time, positioning, and event entry.
Team strategies, game tactics, play calling.
Any discussion about other student-athletes.
There are situations that may require a conference between the coach and player, or coach and parent. These conferences are encouraged. It is important that all parties involved have a clear understanding of the other person’s position. When a conference is necessary, the following procedures should be used to help resolve any concerns.
Student-Coach – open-door policy for all coaches
Parent-Coach – done by appointment
If you have a concern to discuss with a coach, the procedure you should follow is:
Call the coach to schedule an appointment.
If the coach cannot be reached, call the school athletic director; he/she will set a meeting for you.
Please do not attempt to confront a coach before or after a contest or practice. These can be emotional times for both the parent and the coach. Meetings of this nature usually do not promote positive resolutions
What can a parent do if the meeting with the coach did not provide a satisfactory resolution?
Call and schedule an appointment with the school athletic director to discuss the situation.
At this meeting the appropriate next step can be determined, if necessary.

We wish much congratulations to Principal Shavon Brown as she transitions from her home at SWEHS to begin a new journey as the principal of North Edgecombe High School. It goes without saying how much our school adores Principal Brown; she will truly be missed. We celebrate all her accomplishments and look forward to watching her shine at NEHS.
As Principal Brown exits to impact change on the other side of town, a stellar leader is coming to join our team. I introduce Mrs. DeNeasha Strother! Mrs. Strother is a science educator by trade, having middle school and high school teaching experience. Most recently, Mrs. Strother has served W.A. Pattillo Middle School as a school administrator. I had the pleasure of working with Mrs. Strother previously and I know that her strong work ethic, content knowledge, and joy for children will be great assets to our school team.
