THOUGHTS FROM DR. VOELKL
Following our donuts and feasting on Fat Tuesday we will enter into the season of Lent. Lent is a 40 day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday. During this time, we will participate in prayer, reflection and a number of other experiences that will bring us together as a community of faith. We invite all families to join us by taking opportunities for prayer and reflection in their own homes in order to prepare our hearts and minds prior to the celebration of the Lord's Resurrection at Easter.
We will also wrap up our second trimester of the school year at the start of the week. At this point grades have been turned off in our school information system. Please check in with your children to ensure they have turned in assignments, class work etc. Teachers will be working on finalizing report cards. These will be shared with families on Monday, March 14th. Conferences are not held at this reporting period. As always, if you have questions or concerns please reach out to your child's teacher or teachers. If you have celebrations or good news to share please reach out to them as well :-)
Wishing you continued blessings,
Dr. Voelkl

PARENT BOOK STUDY
See below for a more detailed description of the book and author. PLEASE email Dr. Voelkl with the word THRIVERS in the subject line if you would love to participate!!!
The bestselling author of UnSelfie explains why the old markers of accomplishment (grades, test scores) are no longer reliable predictors of success in the 21st century -- and offers 7 teachable traits that will safeguard our kids for the future.
Michele Borba has been a teacher, educational consultant, and parent for 40 years -- and she's never been more worried than she is about this current generation of kids. The high-achieving students she talks with every day are more accomplished, better educated, and more privileged than ever before. They're also more stressed, unhappier, and struggling with anxiety, depression, and burnout at younger and younger ages -- "we're like pretty packages with nothing inside," said one young teen.
Thrivers are different: they flourish in our fast-paced, digital-driven, often uncertain world. Why? Dr. Borba combed scientific studies on resilience, spoke to dozens of researchers/experts in the field and interviewed more than 100 young people from all walks of life, and she found something surprising: the difference between those who struggle and those who succeed comes down not to grades or test scores, but to seven character traits that set Thrivers apart (and set them up for happiness and greater accomplishment later in life).
These traits--confidence, empathy, self-control, integrity, curiosity, perseverance, and optimism--will allow kids to roll with the punches and succeed in life. And the even better news: these traits can be taught to children at any age...in fact, parents and educators must do so. In Thrivers, Dr. Borba offers practical, actionable ways to develop these traits in children from preschool through high school, showing how to teach kids how to cope today so they can thrive tomorrow.

Reminder: Ash Wednesday, all Fridays of Lent and Good Friday (April 15) are days of abstinence (refraining from meat) for all Catholics from age 14 onwards. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, fasting, as well as abstinence, is also obligatory for those ages 18-59.
Abstinence means refraining from meat. Fasting means one full meal a day, with two smaller meals and nothing between meals (liquids are permitted). No Catholic will lightly excuse himself or herself from this obligation.

ALL THINGS NEW
A message from Fr. Eddie,
We are just a few days away from the launch of the Discipleship Maker Index Survey that will be the first opportunity for EVERY Catholic to give feedback for the All Things New plan. There will be an ALL THINGS NEW INFO SESSION on Monday, February 28th at 7:00 pm by Father Eddie in the Church.
The window for responding to the DMI will only last about four weeks, until April 4.
Data collected through the DMI will be key to the decisions made later. Therefore, it is important that as many people as possible complete the DMI.
Over the next two weeks, we will use our social media accounts to provide more information on the DMI, and the All Things New process.
In the meantime, if you want more information, or if you’d like to view Archbishop Rozanski’s video regarding All Things New, click here: https://allthingsnew.archstl.org/.
We also have a committee of parishioners who will usher our parish through this process. You can contact them at any time with questions or for more information:

SCHOOL BOARD OPENINGS
As a faith-based organization, we are mission-driven and mindful of our Catholic identity. Together, we strive to not only build community but further build the kingdom God. The purpose of the Board is to advise the Pastor and Principal in making policy for parish educational programs. Through this rich collaboration, we enhance the academic and overall experience that each child receives. We are still accepting applications for open positions on the School Board.

NURSE / COVID NOTES
We are continuing with Mask Optional protocols at this time...
- Please send in 2 masks in a zip lock back with your child's name on it to keep at school.
- Masks may be used at the discretion of the teacher (group activities that require students to be close to each other)
- If there are 3% of the student body out with COVID, masks will be mandatory for 5 days- parents will be notified.
- COVID number emails will continue to be sent out daily.
THANK YOU again to all who have continued to support us on our COVID journey. While we would LOVE to say that those reaching out with symptoms of runny noses and mild sore throats are suffering from spring colds that is simply not the case. In our experience most of these symptoms have resulted in a positive COVID case. We want our kiddos in school and need staff to teach them. Continuing to monitor symptoms and returning when they have subsided will allow us to do so.
If you have received your COVID vaccine and want it to be documented in our FACTS system please send records to Nurse Quarando at nurse@borromeoschool.com. Please note this is not a requirement.
Please remember to bring water bottles to school, we are going through a lot of cups recently.
CHECKING LUNCH AND BASK ACCOUNTS
CAFE HELP
We are grateful for ALL OF OUR Cafe helpers. Our first session (11:00-12:00) is a slower pace with K-3 students and is mostly helping open items, pass out disposable silverware and condiments, help kiddos stand in line patiently for recess, and help wipe off tables. The second session (12:00-1:00) is a much faster pace yet has lots of kiddos 4-8 grade in and out of the Cafe in less than an hour. This is mostly monitoring/walking the room and helping wipe off tables. Thank you in advance and thank you to those who have helped in the past and continue to help!
