12th GRADE SCHOOL COUNSELING NEWSLETTER-JANUARY 2024
Financial Aid Night January 25th
FAFSA Updates
The FAFSA is live! You can begin filling out your FAFSA online. They have been experiencing some technical problems, so don't be surprised if the website is down when you try to log in. If the website is down, give it a few hours and try again.
The 2024–25 FAFSA changes include the following:
- Every contributor—anyone (student, the student's spouse, a biological or adoptive parent, or the parent's spouse) who's required to provide information on the FAFSA form—will need an FSA ID to access and complete their section of the online form.
- All contributors must provide consent and approval to have their federal tax information transferred directly into the student's FAFSA form via direct data exchange with the IRS. If any contributor doesn't provide consent and approval, submission of the FAFSA form will still be allowed. However, a Student Aid Index, which replaces the Expected Family Contribution, will not be calculated and the student won't be eligible for federal student aid.
- Students will be able to list up to 20 colleges on their online FAFSA form and 10 colleges on the FAFSA PDF.
- Users can start or access the FAFSA form by visiting StudentAid.gov and logging in, where they'll see the link to the FAFSA form on their Dashboard.

- Hear a presentation about the Transition Fair that will be held in April
- Discuss staff training and other initiatives

Scholarships
College-bound seniors! Don't forget to apply for scholarships! Bookmark our scholarship webpage and check back often! There are a lot of local scholarships that get posted during 2nd semester, don't miss out!
- Make your application stand out! Type your information right onto the application. This makes it look more professional than a handwritten application.
- Pay close attention to due dates and where applications are to be turned in or postmarked.
- All scholarship applications that are due to the Counseling Office must be turned in by 3pm on its due date. No late applications will be accepted.
AP Test Prep
If you are taking an AP exam in May, this resource might be useful for you. It gives you information about how to find practice resources in AP classroom as well as resources to help you prepare such as questions from real exams, scoring guidelines, and sample student responses.
Careers in the Trades
Representatives from many unions recommend that high school seniors apply to the unions during their 2nd semester. If you are interested in joining a union-check out their websites and apply early if you can! Sometimes the process can take a while but you can get a headstart now! For more information about the construction and building industry in NWI, check out this resource.

FSA ID for College Bound Students
We'd like to encourage students and parents to create FSA IDs as soon as possible before starting their FAFSA form. Send students and parents to StudentAid.gov/fsa-id/create-account to create an FSA ID.
The Federal Government is telling us that the FAFSA will be available sometime in December, so keep an eye out for information about that!
Get Involved!
Check out the many clubs and sports offered at CHS! If you can't find a club that you are interested in, consider starting one!
