Pirates Post
Week of February 14th
Message from Principal Drew...
Congratulations to our Pirates swimmers that competed in the State Championships this weekend. We are proud of your efforts and the tremendous growth made by our program this season. We look forward to a very bright future for all of our swimmers.
Kudos to our HOSA students and Mrs. Cheryl Harris on a highly successful blood drive on Friday. Students, staff, and community members answered the call for donations and we were able to collect 36 units of blood at this event. Thank you to Mrs. Harris and her students for their planning and execution of such a well run blood drive.
As we observe Valentine's Day tomorrow please reminded that the school will not be able to receive any deliveries for students. This includes balloons, flowers, candy, or any other delivery. Also, students will not be permitted to take items such as balloons, vases, flowers, or candy onto the bus. Please make all deliveries to the student's home and not to school.
Students and parents, this week is Love the Bus Week. We encourage you to join us in celebrating the wonderful bus drivers at PCHS. Each day this week we will acknowledge them for the time and care they give to make sure our students get to school and back home safely. Be sure to take time this week to make your bus driver feel appreciated for all they do.
Parents we wanted to make sure that you knew that there was a brief modified lockdown at both Hertford schools on Friday so that our officer could check on a situation nearby to determine if there was a threat. This was done for precautionary reasons. The modified lockdown was quickly lifted as no threat was deemed for the schools.
We have another busy week at PCHS. On Monday our boys basketball team will play at 6:00 at home versus South Creek in the first round of the conference tournament. Spring sports also start this week. Students should contact their coach if they are interested in playing baseball, softball, women's soccer, or women's or men's track. Anyone interested in participating must have a current physical on file and all rank one forms completed.
This Thursday we will see our Women's soccer team hit the field in Edenton as part of a scrimmage to begin their season. Good luck to Coach Tripp, Coach Williams, and all of our Lady Soccer team members.
Also on Thursday we will hold our Winter Formal. Students interested in attending should see Mrs. Russell on Monday by the end of the day to purchase tickets for this event.
Friday is a mandatory teacher workday. Students will not have school on this day.
Saturday we will see our softball team travel to Riverside High School to compete in a scrimmage and our baseball team will host their annual jamboree on the baseball field at PCHS.
Looking ahead we have several events coming up that will be important to your child and their immediate and long term planning and success.
Monday February 21st is an optional teacher workday. Students will not have school on this day.
Tuesday February 22nd is Family Night at PCHS. We will showcase our CTE and elective courses so that parents and students can better understand the course options and pathways available to students during their time at PCHS.
March 1st we will offer the ACT to all of our Juniors. This test is a part of our school accountability and is also used by colleges and universities as part of the admissions process. The minimum passing score is a 19. Parents please encourage your student to utilize the preparation provided at school each day to be at their very best on the day of the test.

Did You Know???
February is Love The Bus Month! Please also help celebrate School Bus Driver Appreciation Week February 14th through the 18th.
Now more than ever it is important to educate local boards of education, law-makers and the general public about the benefits of school bus transportation. Specifically:
- The school bus provides access to the public schools that many students might not otherwise have.
- The school bus is the safest way to get to and from school.
- The community benefits by the conservation of fuel and the improvement in air quality around the school when students ride the bus.
One way to draw attention to these facts is through the annual Love the Bus month.
For more information and resources, visit: http://www.americanschoolbuscouncil.org/love-the-bus/
We hope to have a proclamation of School Bus Driver Appreciation week by Governor Cooper soon!

The ASVAB test measures your abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success. It is also used by the Armed Services to determine your qualification for enlisting in military service. Taking this test will provide you with lots of resources and information regarding your future career options. See Mrs. Thomas in student services to sign up or to ask questions about the test.
