Helping Students Deal with Social Isolation
Dealing with the new situations involving Social Distancing can be challenging for any age group. However during a time when typical socialization is a challenge, it's important for both parents and students to remain positive. Here are some things that might help:
- Reframe the situation - Although the situation is challenging, look for the positive. Do things that normally, you would not have time to do. Have a movie night, learn a new hobby , or show appreciation to loved ones.
- Actively help out - Perhaps older children can help the younger ones with school work or do an activity. Chores such as helping to cook would be a good way to combine learning and quality time. Put together a care package for a elderly neighbor, learn to make face coverings to be donated, or send thank you cards to hospitals, fire and police stations, and nursing homes.
- Educate yourself - There are a number of rumors that can be very frightening to students. Learn more about protections (hand washing and other related information.)
- Use social media - Check in on friends and loved ones through social media.
Finally, Remind students, and perhaps yourself, that this situation will eventually come to an end. There has been many amazing examples of what communities can do in a crisis when they have a common goal. We will emerge from this as a stronger community.
