Wednesday Roundup 1.31.24
Spotlight Image: "Conversation Fridays" in Heidi Schelander's English class provide seniors with an opportunity to engage with classmates in Socratic seminar style conversations. Students pose thoughtful questions based on their class readings, listen carefully, and articulate their responses, with the end goals being to reflect deeply on a topic, to contribute, and to include everyone in the conversation. #EaglesAreCommunicators Photo courtesy Ms. Schelander.

News & Announcements
State Champs!
Congratulations to our Varsity cheerleaders, who earned the PIAA 3A State Championship Title in the small varsity division last weekend. This is their sixth state championship win in 10 years.
Our athletes earned the highest scores in the entire competition in both prelims and finals. Our team scored 92.03 in the finals, beating the silver medalist by 4.63 points.
The PIAA has hosted the Competitive Spirit Championships since 2013, and during that time, Cumberland Valley has dominated the field. Our Eagles won in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2020, and now again in 2024. Congratulations on bringing home the gold!
Point of Pride: Purple Star Designation
Cumberland Valley School District received the Keystone Award of Excellence Purple Star Designation for support of our military-connected students and families. Ms. Doris Hagemann, Director of Student Services, said that, given our proximity to the Carlisle Army War College and Naval Support Activity Mechanicsburg, it's especially important that we do what we can to assist in easing the transition process for our military students in an effort to ensure an educational process that is as seamless as possible.
Happy 100th!
From "Glam-Mas" and Grandpas to fun shirts and activities, our elementary students from across the district celebrated the 100th day of school in style today. Be sure to check out our social media channels later today for many more 100th day pictures from around the district.
Freezin' For a Reason
Earlier this month, staff from across the district came together to take an icy, 7-degree (brrr!!) dip in Pinchot Lake, all with the common goal of raising money for the Capital Area Region Polar Plunge. Our Freezin' Eagles have raised approximately $100,000 for Special Olympics since joining the plunge 15 years ago.
Portrait of an Eagle Superstars!
Led by our Superintendent, Dr. Mark Blanchard, we began in December what we hope to become a tradition of honoring our staff members who exemplify excellence in demonstrating the Portrait of an Eagle competencies. These staff members were surprised throughout the day by Dr. Blanchard, who presented them with a certificate and a POE Challenge Coin to celebrate both their commitment to their students and their work to foster our competencies.
This is the third in our series of celebrations to take place throughout the year (check back next week for more recipient celebrations). Please help us celebrate the following staff members:
- BETH NICKEL: Ms. Nickel is a Portrait of an Eagle teacher-leader at Eagle View Middle School. During a recent in-service, she led the Critical Thinking lesson for our Math Department while also promoting Portrait of an Eagle daily through classroom activities.
- REBECCA HEGMAN: Ms. Hegman has made the Portrait come to life as she integrates our competencies into her daily 5th-grade classroom activities at Hampden Elementary School. In addition, she has created experiences that allow students to practice the competencies within authentic activities.
- DODIE DYCHE: Mrs. Dyche is recognized for incorporating our Portrait of an Eagle competencies into her daily 2nd-grade instruction at Middlesex Elementary School. Each school day starts with a morning meeting, where students can often be found discussing Portrait "I Can" statements and how those statements can be connected to their daily activities. She encourages and facilitates rich discussions with her class about the competencies, allowing for self-reflection amongst her students. Mrs. Dyche also recognizes her students regularly for exhibiting strengths within the various Portrait competencies.
- LAURA HOUCK: Mrs. Houck, a third-grade teacher at Monroe Elementary School, is committed to the idea of Portrait, and she has been instrumental in creating lesson plans and morning meetings to support Portrait of an Eagle at the elementary level. Her supportive approach to instilling the skills and dispositions of PoE is both noticed and received by students.
Portrait of an Eagle: Student Spotlight
Students in Mrs. Jennifer Kapp's second-grade class at Middlesex Elementary School each brought in 100 items in celebration of the 100th day of school today, but the contents of their bags were a mystery. Our Mountain Lions then displayed communication and critical thinking skills as they carefully listened, analyzed clues, and tried to identify the 100 items inside each bag. They are a Portrait of an Eagle. Photos courtesy Mrs. Kapp.
