Nixon Elementary Weekly Update
January 3, 2024
Happy New Year!
I hope everyone had an amazing break filled with fun. I am eager to get back to school and back to our learning today (Wednesday, January 3). We have some important midyear testing coming up, and I am excited to see the growth your children have made in this first semester of school.
Be sure to read these reminders carefully as we have important dates and information to remind you about.
Drop Off Times: I want to remind everyone that we do not open our doors and have supervision until 8:30 for our learners. We have more and more children standing outside before 8:30, and even if it is cold and snowy, we will not have supervision or allow children inside until 8:30. I will begin calling families of those who are dropping off too early after this first week because I don't want children out when the temperatures start getting into single digits or lower!!! Please do NOT drop your children off or have them walk to school until 8:30!
Pick Up Times: Along these same lines, I want to remind everyone that we start our dismissal process at 3:45 with walkers, 3:47 bus/daycare van riders, and 3:50 for car riders. We have some consistently late families picking up (well after 4:00pm). Please set an alarm to get to school on time for pick up. I don't have staff to supervise children left after 4:00pm. Again, I will begin making family contact after this week if we continue to have children left late at school.
Cold Weather Gear: Just a reminder to send your children to school with their cold weather gear. We go outdoors for recess as long as the "Feels Like" temperature is 10 degrees or warmer. Winter coats, hats, gloves/mittens, scarves, snow pants, boots, etc. are all important items to have available at school. We love to get the fresh air and don't have enough winter gear to loan out to everyone who forgets, so please be sure to send your child to school prepared to go outdoors. We do not make exceptions without a doctor's note, so be sure your child is ready to go outside!
Keep Collecting Hy Vee Receipts: We had a big push for receipts during the first semester, and we're planning another fun competition during the second semester, too! During our first competition, our school raised over $450 for our Nixon PTA. That money, combined with our next set of receipts, will be spent on items for classrooms, field trips, celebrations, and so much more! Be sure to keep saving those Hy Vee Receipts and send them to school with your children (now, or during the big competition!).
Important Dates: We have several important days coming up, so be sure to mark these on your calendar:
- January 3: Return to school
- January 9: PTA Sponsored Bingo & Popcorn Event (Nixon Gym 6:00-7:00 pm)
- January 15 & 16: No School
- January 17: New Semester Begins
- January 17-31: Midyear Testing Window (all learners will participate in various assessments during this time)
- January 22: Report Cards are available to view on Infinite Campus for Semester 1
- February 5: No School
It's a great day to be a Bobcat! Happy New Year Everyone!
