Using Asus CloudReady Chromebooks

The BROWSE AS GUEST feature, located at the bottom left corner of the home screen, is ideal for most classroom situations for brief browsing sessions.

The option to SIGN IN may be useful for students who have checked out a device for personal use over an extended period of time. Signing in allows users to access their Chrome bookmarks and store site login credentials.

A guest session begins when you click "Browse as Guest" on the sign-in screen, and ends when you click "Exit guest" from the task bar. Closing the browser window does not end your session.

When browsing as a guest, no personal information is saved from session to session...

Within your guest session:

• You can log into Google, but will not have a personal bookmark bar appear on any tabs
• You can close and reopen a browser window within a session and retain credentials

(Any new window or tab opened will appear fresh, but site credentials are still active)

• You can sign in to your Google Drive to upload screenshots/downloads you want to save
• You must exit the session to clear passwords and any files that have been downloaded

You become a user when you sign in using a Google ID on the sign-in screen.

When you sign in on the Chromebook, you can access your personal bookmarks and retain site credentials from session to session.

Within your user session:

• You will be logged into Google until you choose to sign out
  
• Your personal bookmark bar will appear on all tabs
  
• You can close and reopen a browser window within a session and retain credentials
  
• You can sign in to your Google Drive to upload screenshots/downloads you want to save
  
• Your site credentials will be retained from session to session
  
• You must exit the session to prevent others from accessing your information
  

By default, any users who sign in on a device will have an icon appear on the sign-in screen. This will populate the screen with user profiles if multiple students sign in. This can be remedied in the settings if logged in as the "owner" profile.

Each device will adopt the first user to sign in as the "owner," so classroom teachers will need to establish the owner profile as "Austin High" as directed by Mrs. Stewart, before allowing students to use devices.

While logged in on the owner profile, select "Settings" from the task bar. Scroll down to the People section and select "Manage other users." Uncheck the box next to "Show usernames and photos on the sign-in screen" and click "Done." This will prevent user profiles from flooding the sign-in screen.

These Asus devices are not new, so battery life will vary. It is recommended that you charge devices when not in use. The task bar will give an estimate of battery life remaining while in use.

Keys can be replaced (and/or restored to proper positions) as long as there is no damage to the metal prongs and rubber nubs. If a key is missing and damage is present, it will often still work to press the sensor with a finger. For devices with peripheral key damage, such as a delete or escape key, there is little impact on users.

By default, if you close the lid while in a session, the device will sleep. Upon waking (open and press a key/mousepad) the browser will return to the session in progress. It does not exit a session automatically. This is especially important for users logged in who should protect their passwords. In the settings, under People, users can select to require password to wake from sleep.

All AISD students have a Google account through the district. You can find your students' Google IDs two ways. Individually, by looking at the bottom of the "Demographics" section on their Student Summary page in TEAMS, and collectively by opening your Class Roster app in the AISD Cloud. You will find lists by course section, and each class has a single email address you can use to share files with an entire class at once, using your Google Drive or email.

Google Classroom & Google Drive are available to you and your students on the AISD Cloud.

Google Classroom is a great tool for managing assignments, sharing documents, and ensuring that resources are available to your students. It is up to them to log in, check assignments and postings, and submit work products.

Google Drive is a great tool for teachers and students who aren't ready for a fully-online classroom, but want to utilize collaborative tools for partner/group assignments, online submission, and easy sharing of files. Google Drive is also a great tool for students to use to store class projects, research notes, and various assignments. Students can even take their files with them when they graduate.
