Tiger Tales from Sanborn School
April 3, 2023
Dear Sanborn Families,
Welcome Back from Spring Break! We hope you had a wonderful and restful week with your family and friends. We are excited for the remainder of the school year! It is hard to believe that there are only about nine weeks left of school. There is a lot of learning that will happen and many fun spring events on the horizon. We hope you will mark your calendar for Wednesday, May 3, which is Sanborn's Open House from 6:30 p.m.- 7:30 p.m. This is a great time for families and students to visit all parts of Sanborn School and learn more about what has been happening in classrooms this school year.
Congratulations to the February Golden Paw Award Winners: Mrs. Moore's first grade class and Ms. Rodrian's third grade class! The entire class was being respectful, responsible, and safe, and we celebrated with a fun game of BINGO. This week, the March Golden Paw Award Winners will be announced and celebrations will be planned!
The future of Sanborn's PTA is on the line right now as we do not have anyone signed up to voluteer for the important board positions next school year. This year, our PTA was able to provide the following events for our school community: Kindergarten Play Date, Dance-a-thon, Walk to School Day, Movie Night, Ice Cream during the Turkey 2-Ball event, Holiday Breakfast & Shop, Trinity Irish Dancers Assembly (all school), Birds of Prey Assembly (4th Grade), and Staff Appreciation Treats. Without the board positions filled, and without volunteers to organize these events (or new events!), we will not be able to have a functioning PTA next school year. If you are on the fence right now about whether you would like to volunteer or not, or if would like to learn more about these positions, please feel free to reach out to me or our current PTA President: Caitlin Butler (caitlindbutler@yahoo.com) for more information. Our next meeting is coming up soon and we hope you will join us (Tuesday, April 11 @ 6:30 p.m. in the library or online- see the link below in the PTA section).
Thank you for your continued support and please reach out to me with any questions. We are hopeful that warmer weather is on the horizon and we look forward to the next few months of school!
Warmly,
Kate Arenberg, Principal

Sanborn students and staff were treated to a very festive assembly on March 17 by the Trinity Irish Dancers!
Staff Highlight: 5th Grade Team!
Fifth graders have been very busy with their school work and a variety of learning experiences. Here is a glimpse into what they have been up to:
Math: Illustrative is a new program this year and the format/structure is full of collaboration and rigor. This is not easy for many to embrace, but they are truly demonstrating growth and adjusting well to the program. Students are continuing to polish their math skills and further develop ways to demonstrate and explain their thinking.
Science: There are 3 units of study in the 5th grade science curriculum: Living Systems, Earth, Moon, and Sun, and Mixtures and Solutions. Students are enjoying the variety of activities embedded within each unit. Some of the highlights from the Living Systems unit include exploring a body system of their choice and creating a display board that explains ways to keep it healthy, problems it can have, as well as what other systems it works with. Highlights within the Earth, Moon, and Sun unit include a planet research project where students become experts on one of the planets in our solar system; in this project students create a Google slide presentation along with a physical model of their planet. Students will also get to experience a virtual visit with NASA, including a bag of goodies. Highlights from Mixtures and Solutions include hands-on experiments and creating a WeVideo project.
Literacy: Students have had the opportunity to enjoy many IRA (Interactive Read Alouds) from a variety of genres and participate in discourse and conversation. Students also had the opportunity to meet author Jeff Miller and learn about his journey as a writer. All classrooms were given a signed copy of his most recent book, Rare Birds. Class time has been spent in guided reading as well as polishing extended response writing using the CER format (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning). Students are working hard to master this challenging skill. Other areas of writing we have been exploring include ways to create a strong paragraph, expository writing, and argumentative writing.
Social Studies: Students have spent this year learning about the explorers and why they left Europe. Currently we are exploring how the first colonies established themselves in the New World and how the different geographic areas impacted their survival.
Upcoming highlights to share: In the upcoming months, 5th graders will be exploring Genocide, a state standard, by reading the book Four Perfect Pebbles by Marion Blumentahl Lazan and Lila Perl. This story is Marion’s life as a child and her experiences during World War II and the Nazi invasion in Poland. We are soooo beyond excited to have the opportunity to meet Marion via Zoom and hear her strength and message of hope and acceptance.
Staff Highlight: Instructional Coach and Parent Liaison!
Teachers Love to Learn, Too!
My name is Holly Lannert, and I am the instructional coach at Sanborn. Just as we encourage our students to learn and grow, our staff is dedicated to learning and growing, too! We meet as a staff to learn about new instructional techniques together and set goals, then we practice what we learn in our classrooms. We have great motivation… we want our instruction to be as effective and engaging as possible for our students!
This year, our kindergarten and first grade teachers have been diving into new research about how children learn to read and applying this knowledge in their classrooms. If you have children this age, you may notice them “tapping out” words. This is one of many strategies we have implemented.
All of our teachers have been learning about ways to deepen students' responses to questions in both written and spoken form. One of the formats that we are using is called CER, which stands for claim, evidence, and reasoning. This is not a new technique, but we have looked at each component and determined a progression of skills needed to construct high-quality responses. Teachers in these grades are honing their abilities to analyze students’ responses and provide them with feedback that helps deepen their thinking. We are seeing students continuing to improve in using this format to thoughtfully organize their ideas and express themselves effectively.
In my role, I work with many students and staff at Sanborn, and they make me smile every single day. I love being a part of this caring community!
Mrs. Flores serves as Sanborn's Bilingual Parent Liaison. Mrs. Flores spends some mornings at Sanborn supporting parent needs and also supports districtwide events. We appreciate the partnership Mrs. Flores has between Sanborn and the larger D15 community!
Upcoming Safety Drill Information at Sanborn
Each year, schools are required to facilitate a variety of school safety drills. We will be having an observed lockdown drill with the Palatine Police Department during the week of April 17. We will be having an observed fire drill and relocation drill (we relocate to the Palatine Park District building across the street) on Wednesday, May 3, at 9:00 a.m., with the support of the Palatine Police and Fire Departments. As a reminder, here is safety information from District 15 that was shared with families earlier this school year:
District 15 is strongly committed to school safety. Our goal is to not only provide a safe environment, but to also prepare our school community to know how to respond if/when a crisis arises. Each year, schools are required by Illinois School Code to conduct the following drills:
- Three evacuation drills. One of the three evacuation drills must be supervised by the fire department.
- One bus evacuation drill.
- One severe weather/shelter-in-place drill.
- Two law enforcement (lockdown) drills. One of these two law enforcement drills must be a staff-initiated lock-down. The schools also conduct an annual drill review meeting with principals and representatives from police and fire departments to continuously improve each school’s readiness to respond to an emergency and/or crisis situation.
House Bill 2400 (The School Safety Drill Act) states:
- All lockdown drills will be announced to all school personnel and students prior to the commencement of the drill.
- Schools will provide sufficient information and notification to parents and guardians in advance of any lockdown drill that involves the participation of students.
- Schools will provide parents and guardians an opportunity to exempt their child for any reason from participating in the walk-through lockdown drill.
- Schools will provide alternative safety education and instruction related to an active threat or active shooter event to students who do not participate in a walk-through lockdown drill to provide them with essential information, training, and instruction through less sensorial safety training methods.
In addition to these drills, D15 also practices a Relocation Drill every other year with students and staff. In the event a school had an emergency situation that required us to evacuate a building (i.e. fire, water main break, gas leak, etc.) and we needed to move students to an alternate location for the remainder of the school day, we would take our students to the relocation site. The schools “relocate” to a relocation site via bus or walking (depending on the location of the relocation site).
Building administrators will notify families of upcoming drills at least one week in advance of the drill. If you prefer your child does NOT participate in the yearly required lockdown drills, please complete this form. Please submit one form for each of your children you are opting out.

Estimados padres y tutores:
