Greetings Braves Family,

As 2021 draws to an end, we are grateful that during this unprecedented time, our students and staff have maintained resilience. Their commitment to success has risen beyond our expectations. We are very appreciative of your support.

We would like to congratulate our Reading Teacher of the Year, Mr. Dubois Scott. Mr. Scott teaches English and is dedicated to his students and IRHS.

We hope that this winter break is a time of rest and relaxation. Please practice social distancing, wear your mask, and if traveling, please be cautious. Remember, winter break is from December 20th through January 2nd. Students will return to the building on January 3rd.

On behalf of the faculty and staff of Indian River, I would like to wish all our Braves families a Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year. We hope that you have a restful and safe winter break.

Quick Tip is a support system that allows students to communicate with school administrators anonymously. While the district already has many programs to help students deal with challenges such as bullying behaviors, stress, peer pressure, and family problems, Quick Tip helps break the code of silence often experienced by students because it allows them to report concerns to administrators anonymously.

On Friday, December 31st, the Chesapeake Public Schools' School Board directed School Administration to make COVID-19 vaccines and testing for student athletes optional beginning January 3, 2022. Masks will be mandatory on school property. Masks are still required on school buses, as per the federal requirements.

The morning of January 3rd, student drivers without a parking pass will be ticketed. Students may still purchase parking passes in the main office. This information here.

Students may not enter the building prior to 8:40 a.m. Upon arrival, students should report directly to their homeroom classroom or directly to the cafeteria for breakfast. Students may drop off instruments before they report to homeroom. Dismissal is staggered at the end of the day: 3:53 p.m. for bus riders; 3:55 p.m. for walkers, parent pick-up, and student drivers; 3:57 p.m. for athletes and student activities.

Due to health and safety guidelines at this time, limited items may be dropped off. The acceptance of forgotten items is limited to medicine/personal items delivered to the clinic or Chromebooks and school work. Any student who forgets his/her lunch will be offered a school lunch at no charge. No food deliveries of any kind will be allowed. This policy is for student safety and to maximize instructional time. No earbuds. Cell phones and house keys will be given to the student at the end of the day. Sports equipment may be dropped off at the end of the day before practice.

This year's Reading Teacher of the Year is no stranger to literacy. Actually, this person is a true advocate. This phenomenal winner loves opening a new book, devouring the content, and then sharing with anyone who will listen. Most importantly, this person finds a media specialist and makes a case for the resource to be included in our collection. This person not only is an avid reader, but also excels in the English classroom. This person can often be seen wearing sneakers with his suits, so he's always ready. Congratulations to our 2021-2022 Reading Teacher of the Year, Mr. DuBois Scott!

We are so proud of our honor roll students!

The 2021-2022 yearbook is going to be completely different than all the ones that have come before. This year's theme, Tree of Life, breaks from many of our yearbook traditions. The yearbook staff has been hard at work creating a book that everyone will want to have. There are many opportunities for students to be featured in the yearbook, outside of portraits or activities. We have run several polls about what life is "really" like here at Indian River, and students whose poll answers are featured in the yearbook have been entered in a raffle to win a free yearbook. It is currently on sale for $80.00, but the price goes up to $85.00 in February. Yearbooks can be purchased through the Jostens website. Senior ads can also be purchased--pay tribute to a graduating senior by purchasing an ad from Jostens.

SCA and Alpha decorated the main hallway for our Winter Spirit Week.

Braves were able to select warm items from our tree. The tree included gloves, scarves, and hats.

Panera hosted an event for our custodians last night for custodial support week. Mr. Fedorowicz set this event up for our custodial staff and Mr.Easter from Panera’s local headquarters came by and brought sandwiches, chips, tea, and cookies. Panera wanted to ensure that our custodial staff feels appreciated for everything they do to keep our school safe and clean.

During the month of February, Indian River High School's students and staff members will be celebrating Black History Month by embracing the theme: Black History Is...

In doing so, the River family will honor the legacy of African Americans, past and present.

Indian River Rep is preparing its VHSL one-act, Midnight Wax for Jan. 22 competition at Salem High School. Midnight Wax tells the story of a failing wax museum whose employees will stop at nothing to save their beloved museum. Including murder. Public performance Feb. 3 at 7:00 pm.

The Varsity Competition Team had a very impressive season. Hitting 3 perfect routines at each competition, their perseverance and hard work helped them to earn the honor of Region 5A runner-up which secured them a spot in the VHSL State Cheer Competition. The Braves performed at the state competition on Saturday, November 6th at the Siegel Center in Richmond with an awesome performance scoring the highest in school history and placing 5th in the state.
