Flower Barrel Available for Pick-up
Special Garden Project
The Special Garden Project is a way to offer 4-H members the chance to grow unusual and fun projects in their gardens. The 2022 Special Garden Project is focused on the tasty Rubenza Cosmos. The flowers of the Rubenza are unique, the petals change color as they age. Pollinators and beneficial insects are attracted to the blooms all summer long. These cosmos make great cut flowers. Be sure to enjoy a bouquet of Rubenza indoors. Youth should enroll for the Special Garden Project through 4-H Online.
4-H members participating in the Special Garden Project will:
- Receive a “packet” of seeds
- Receive a newsletter about: planting/growing, problems & insects, harvesting & using
Seed packets have been ordered, but you can still participate.
If interested in participating, youth need to be enrolled in 4-H and in the special garden project area, and please contact the Extension Office to reserve your seeds. Seed packets will be $0.50 each.
Horticulture & Floriculture Exhibits for Fair
Horticulture exhibitors- save your seed packets! To exhibit in this area, you must know your varieties and cultivars. This information must come in with your flowers and vegetables on entry day. Need information on exhibiting flowers/vegetables/ herbs/fruit items? Check out these resources when preparing entries for the fair:
ALERT ALERT ALERT ALERT ALERT ALERT
There is no longer a weight limit for container-grown houseplants, hanging baskets, dish gardens, desert gardens, and terrariums. The current rule states that container-grown plants must be in containers no greater than 12 inches in diameter (inside opening measurement).
Online Horticulture Contest
Mark your calendars! The online horticulture contest will be offered June 3-20th 2022.
Do you know what it takes to pick the best fruit and vegetables out at the grocery store? Or do you know what judges are looking for when they judge your plants at the county fair? Have you ever wondered, what plant is that!?! We are excited to offer the opportunity to learn these and other important horticulture skills through the Online Horticulture Contest. The contest will be available June 3-20, 2022 at: https://go.unl.edu/online4hhortcontestSpecial Agronomy Project
The Nebraska Extension Special Agronomy Project gives 4-H members an opportunity to experience a crop that is grown, was grown or has the potential to be grown in Nebraska. Youth participate by receiving seed and resources to grow the crop, research traits of the crop and determine the viability of that crop in the part of the state they live. The project allows 4-H members interested in agronomy to grow something fun, new, and different.
The focus of the 2022 Special Agronomy Project is Broomcorn Sorghum. Broomcorn can be used for ornamental uses in floral arrangements or harvested for broom-use prior to seed maturity. To participate in the Special Agronomy Project, enroll in the project through 4-H Online or call your local extension office to reserve seed.
There are three ways to complete this at the county or state fair. First, an educational exhibit that can be in a poster format can include what you learned. Secondly, let your creativity go wild and create a video-type presentation explaining what you have learned, showing the growing process, etc. Finally, you can enter the crop itself. To do this, cut 4 stalks at the ground level and bound-together with supporting information about the project. For project specifications and details, be sure to go to the Nebraska State Fairbook at 4hfairbook.unl.edu/fairbookview.php/rules.

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI)
4-H Families and Volunteers need to be aware of HPAI as it is spreading across Nebraska and the nation. As a poultry owner, we encourage you to stay up to date on the virus. From the Nebraska Department of Ag, HPAI is a highly contagious virus that spreads easily among birds through nasal and eye secretions, as well as manure. The virus can be spread in various ways from flock to flock, including by wild birds, through contact with infected poultry, by equipment, and on the clothing and shoes of caretakers. Wild birds can carry the virus without becoming sick, while domesticated birds can become very sick.
Symptoms of HPAI in poultry include: a decrease in water consumption; lack of energy and appetite; decreased egg production or soft-shelled, misshapen eggs; nasal discharge, coughing, sneezing; incoordination; and diarrhea. HPAI can also cause sudden death in birds even if they aren’t showing any other symptoms. HPAI can survive for weeks in contaminated environments. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the risk to people getting HPAI infections from birds is low. No human cases of avian influenza viruses have been detected in the United States. For more information about avian influenza, visit NDA’s website at https://nda.nebraska.gov/animal/avian/index.html or the USDA’s website https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/. Additional information on biosecurity for backyard flocks can be found at http://healthybirds.aphis.usda.gov
As of now, no shows or exhibitions are allowed through May 15th. The Nebraska Department of Agriculture will reassess near that date.

Sheep & Goat Weigh Day is scheduled for Friday, May 6th at the Adams County Fairgrounds, from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The 4-H Council has decided that it is not mandatory for exhibitors planning on showing Market Sheep & Meat Goats at fair to weigh their animals at a weigh date. However, animals will need to be weighed in Adams County to participate in the Rate of Gain Contest.
If you do not weigh in your animals you will need to stop by the Extension Office to pick up tags and complete your paper work. The Carcass Contest has been suspended for 2022 due to processing complications.
- There will be no cost for the County ear tags.
